As For Me and My House

in Decorating Details

If you’re coming by from Kelly’s Korner, welcome! Glad to have you here. Also, from Studio M’s Sign party, welcome to you too! The diningroom you’ll see peeking in from here has since been painted Antique White and you can see that in another post.

IMG_4006

I’ve long admired those wall words that I’ve seen in other’s homes and across blogland, so when I was in Hobby Lobby recently and saw they had theirs on sale for 1/2 off, it was too good to resist ($15!), so I looked through all they had to offer and came up with this encouraging verse. I’ve always loved this and I thought it was the perfect sentiment for our home. Hubby loves it too!

IMG_4005

After looking all around the livingroom, I placed it just over the big arched window coming in our front door and that seems to be the perfect spot for it.

IMG_4009

The day was sunny and bright and it was a good time to just take some random shots of the foyer, living room, and into the kitchen, so I went snapping away. I don’t think I have a post with all of this main area in one place, so thought you all might enjoy seeing it all together. This is for all of you who love the details! Looking back towards the foyer, down the stairs which come in the front door of our split foyer home. In case anyone wants to know the wall color, it is Whole Wheat by Sherwin Williams and I have really enjoyed it. No plans to change it in the near future.

IMG_4010

Lots of sunshine streams in through all the windows and I love it on days like this. I’ve tweaked my living room just a bit, so you might see a few changes. I had some dried florals on either side of the fireplace that I took down. I’m liking the sparer look (even though I’m far from a minimalist!).

IMG_4011

The living room. This is a good picture that shows what floating your furniture looks like. If you have the space in a room, it looks so much better to bring all the furniture into a grouping around the fireplace like this and leave paths open behind for walking.

IMG_4012

IMG_4018

Fireplace mantel, with the cleaner look. I added back these glass sconces I’ve had for years, but still like. These are brass and I painted them to make them look old and worn and they have crackled glass. The 3 pears are one of my favorite things.

IMG_4014

Looking from dining room out to the foyer. You will see a new color in here VERY soon. Work is already in progress this week in the dining room. And I think the new, lighter paint color has been decided.

IMG_4015

Across the livingroom towards hubby’s office and another bedroom.

IMG_4017

Back to the living room and sofa. See that black vase behind the sofa? It has real cotton in it! I stopped one day last fall out in the country and snipped off some cotton plants that were blooming, so you can see cotton is still grown in AL!

IMG_4019

End table

IMG_4020

Amaryllis blooming even larger now.

IMG_4021

Looking back towards foyer.

IMG_4022

My decorating books stacked on the end table and behind the chairs, there’s my $25 oil painting found at a yardsale (not the frame, just the painting). I find some pretty awesome things out there.

IMG_4023

Peeking into the kitchen.

IMG_4024

Towards dining room.

IMG_4025

Another look at the dining room.

IMG_4026

Linden Street console table and antique mirror. I’m thinking about painting these 2 chairs a fun color.

IMG_4027

Antique mirror which I’ve had for over 20 years.

IMG_4039

Top of mirror with some treasures.

IMG_4028

Mom made this valance for me several years ago. The silk fabric came from a yardsale. I still love this and this one single window was a good place to put it.

IMG_4029

There’s this little area behind the railing that needed something, so I added a column and finial that I painted that came from House Parts in Atlanta.

IMG_4030

Mirror reflection of foyer and dining room.

IMG_4032

The foyer table that gets changed around a lot.

IMG_4033

Plants in the foyer.

IMG_4034

Looking out the mirror in the diningroom. I like how all these spaces connect to each other.

IMG_4035

Looking from dining room into kitchen.

IMG_4036

We don’t have a huge kitchen, but it’s functional. I’m really excited, as I think I might finally be able to change out my countertops this year. We have tumbled marble tiles now with large grout lines that get dirty and I have not liked them at all. They are pretty, but not functional. I want to keep the backsplash, but change out the countertops and sink. IMG_4037

My antique French cupboard in the kitchen. I love this piece. Someone asked about the kitchen wall color. Should have included that too. It’s by Laura Ashley (from Lowes) and is Olive 4. I had it in my old kitchen and loved it so much, I brought it over here too.

IMG_4038

And that rounds out our upstairs main living area. Hope you enjoyed the tour!

I’m ready for Blissdom 09 in Nashville. Leaving early on Friday morning and will be driving back on Sunday. See you soon with lots of fun details and you can be sure, many pics! I won’t be posting again until I return. Hope you all have a great weekend too!

As always, I love your tours! The wall words are super! I was at Hobby Lobby yesterday. That is on of my favorite stores. I love the verse that chose. That was our family devotion last night. We all gathered in the Sunroom and listend as my husband read from Joshua – then he lead us in a discussion about family alters and how important it is for family to pray together and serve God in unity. Thanks for sharing. Have fun at Blissdom! Can’t wait to hear all your news and ideas!

Hi Rhoda -
Your home is just gorgeous! I love that Scripture verse and would love to have it on my wall. We don’t have Hobby Lobby here but I might find it somewhere else someday. Everything is so inviting and cozy in your home. Wish I lived close enough to drop by for a visit!

Have a great time at Blissdom. Can’t wait to hear all about it. And see pictures.

Rhoda – it’s so beautiful! I just met you online, and fell in love with your blog. I had two questions – in your office cube shown in an older post, you have rope trim on the edges of the walls. Would you please let me know how you adhered it to the wall?
Also, how do you hang the decorative plates, yours look like they are just glued to the wall – I’m in a rental home, and don’t have anything on the walls. I’ve bought some pretty plates, but don’t know how to hang them. Any suggestions you can give me would be especially appreciated. Thanks again, and nice to meet you. :)

Hi Rhoda, I hope you have a lot of fun in Nashville. I’m so glad you posted these gorgeous pictures. Whenever I think of the very stereotypical “southern belle” home, I’ve always imagined these colours along with the gold-framed pictures, etc. Secretly, I was kind of hoping that the South is still all gentility and sweet tea (hee hee!) because I think y’all are the nicest people there are.

I was shocked that this post finally made me realize what to do with our one-bedroom apartment, here in Toronto. My major problem is that the hall, dining room and sitting room all open to each other, similar to yours. I was wondering what kind of style I would enjoy enough to have it in all three places to tie them together. And now I have it! Plus, I can get my “contemporary” fix in our bedroom, which is closed off from the rest of the space. My husband is going to be so happy that I’ll be putting up our Summer yard sales finds, FINALLY!

Thanks again, and I look forward to the next post on my favourite blog!

Thanks for playing along Rhoda! You know I love looking at your house. Your wall words are just perfect over the foyer! Glad to know they are a good size, I have looked at them several times!

Perfect! Have a wonderful Mother’s Day…

Rhoda, your home is just incredible! I love the red curtains in your kitchen area. I have a similar wall color, I wonder how something like that would look at my home.
I had those same vinyl wall letters ordered for my store but alsas, I had to close my doors but aren’t they great? My 11th wedding anniversary is next Saturday and I planned to go to the Hobby Lobby and get the always kiss me goodnight for over our bed as a surprise. Half off of course!! I always enjoy your blog. Usually I am here though on my other blog Southern Charm Home Decor. Have a wonderful weekend!!

Your living room is stunning! I LOVE the lettering on the wall. I’ve been wanting to do that myself. I really need to make a trip to HL!

Wow…your living room is amazing. The way you decorate is simply beautiful. I LOVE the “As for me and house…” saying on the walls. I would love to have something like that in my house. You are VERY talented in decorating. Thank you so much for sharing.
