You know how much I love to update old furniture with paint. It’s one of the easiest and most cost-effective ways to update and transform furniture into something desirable. I’ve been painting furniture for years and now there are so many new products out there to help this process along. From spray paint to chalk paint, there is a paint for all occasions.

The trend in the last couple of years has continued to evolve by painting those old castoffs with brightly color hues. It’s a great way to add that pop of color in the room to really wake up your space. I myself totally love this trend!

My sister found that table and chairs set on Craigslist for $100 and it is the perfect addition to her craft room. But, it’s kinda ugly, don’t you think? and pssst, there’s a $50 Home Depot giftcard giveaway at the end, so read it all, OK?!

Not a fan of blonde orangey wood, are you?

So, we are going to transform those pieces and make them SO much better. With this luscious new Barcelona Orange shade by Annie Sloan chalk paint, this table and chairs will have a whole new lease on life.

Ready to start painting.

We painted 2 coats of Annie Sloan chalk paint on these pieces and the finish is really nice after the 2 coats are applied. I am really loving the ASCP so much and want to use it more and more on many other pieces. This was my first time using it on furniture and it does have a very dry chalk like feel when dry.

Amazingly smooth finish too, but it needs wax. I am going to finish this set up with Annie Sloan Dark Wax on top and that should complete this Craigslist find into a functional and pretty craft table. I’ll be back later to show how we waxed it!

By the way, you can order Annie Sloan chalk paint from my sponsor, Stylish Patina, and her button is on my sidebar. As soon as I get that Dark Wax, we’ll finish this project and I’ll do a how-to on the whole thing. I did add some clear wax on the table, which is what you see here, but the Dark wax will complete the look.

So, are you liking this new trend of brightly painted furniture? I think it is such a fun way to add some pretty pizazz to otherwise bland and dated furniture, don’t you?

Here are some more great examples around blogland of brightly painted hues of furniture pieces. See what you think about these!

This turquoise beauty is from Natty by Design and she has it going on with painting older pieces of furniture that need a new life.

From Country Living, see how that pop of orange on the coffee table adds so much spunk to the room. You can see bits of the same color on the pillows sprinkled around the room too.

My blog friend, Emily, painted this campaign dresser for her office in a springy green and it is a great mix for her space. I can’t wait to see what she does in her new office.

From Design Sponge, this dresser started off as a standard issue brown wood French inspired piece. There’s certainly nothing wrong with brown wood, I have plenty of it myself, but if you have a piece that has seen better days, what better way to shake it up than to paint it a sunny yellow.

I have always adored the way Myra transformed this vintage desk into something so pretty and lively for her home. Love it!

From Opal Never Shouts, this blue painted chest is such a vibrant color and perfectly at home with the other colors surrounding it in the room.

This jewelry chest came in a cherry finish and was transformed by Repurposed Life Designs in a happy yellow and how much more fun would this be to wake up to?

From Good Life of Design, here’s another example of an older piece brought up to date with this meadow green paint. I’m in love with green painted anything, so this is so pretty to me.

Going to the fabric stores have always been a great way to be inspired. In fact, it’s downright dangerous. Whenever I stroll through the aisles of a wonderful fabric store like Lewis and Sheron fabrics here in Atlanta, I want to chuck all my fabrics and start over. Oh, those lovely and colorful prints and solids draw me in and beg me to take them home. I’m not ready to do anything right now, but these beautiful bolts grab me every single time.

My mother used to drag us in the fabric stores when we were young and then, I didn’t think it was all that much fun, but I later came to love seeing those bolts of fabrics and all the possibilities that came from them: a new dress, skirt, drapery panels, or pillows, oh the endless inspiration that fabric on the bolt held for me.

If you are looking for a jumpstart for a decorating project, hit your local fabric store and see if something speaks to you. These sure were speaking to me. Lewis and Sheron has been a staple for Atlanta’s fabric choices and I wanted to show you firsthand where I’ve been shopping for years. This is one of two fabric stores off Howell Mill Road. Forsyth Fabrics is the other one and they both have a ton of choices.

We’ll stop in Lewis and Sheron first and maybe another time, I’ll show off the other one.

Just inside the front door, this wall of beautiful fabrics was waiting.

Bolts and bolts of beautiful fabrics. Their prices are not outrageous either. Many affordable fabrics.

I love how they group coordinating fabrics like this happy combo. Dog lovers will enjoy that one!

Row after row, aisle after aisle of gorgeousness.

Soft and serene neutral beauties.

Here’s that row of sea-inspired fabrics I talked about. Gorgeous, aren’t they!?

Lovely and trendy grays are so popular right now.

Gray and yellow, a wonderful combo.

More grays to choose from.

Florals and stripes and so many to look at. You can imagine how overwhelming it might be to choose fabrics in here? You have to stay focused in a place like this.

Love all of these.

They offer ready made drapery panels too.

Amazing selections await.

Oh wait, how about blues? These are so pretty too.

Blues and greens, here you go!

They even have furniture choices and you can have them upholstered in the fabric of your dreams.

Nice, huh?

Ready made pillows too.

As well as a huge room of nothing but trims.

Any trim and tassles you can imagine is here.

Look through that doorway there. It is called Staceage and I’m not sure of it’s origin, but it looks like a retro place with color power that will knock you out with eye candy.

See!! Look at the chairs and fabric combos. It’s an explosion of color and pattern. Just like the 60’s and 70′s.

It makes you smile just to walk around in here. A glam bed.

This vintage style chair was covered in snazzy green fabrics. It’s tons of fun!

Look at the back with that yummy crown. What a statement piece this chair is. It was so fun to walk around in this room. I was just amazed at all the bright fabrics and the way the furniture was painted and displayed.

Yum, I love these colors.

Look at this stool, the gold is glittered.

And this sofa, so fun and funky.

This pearlized blue chair was funky too, love the look. This is a fun way to update old and vintage pieces. They take painted furniture to another level.

Like this settee.

It was painted in a glossy two toned paint finish, not blue or purple, but both. Notice the nailheads.

How about this bright and vibrantly painted chaise lounge.

Here’s something I have never seen before. Nailheads in all sorts of colors. $100 for 250 of them.

Could you have some fun with all of these colors?

Check out this drapey chair.

So many possibilities.

Throws embellished with trim.

This pink chair was so happy, with the throw draped across.

I knew you would love seeing Lewis and Sheron. They are a wonderful fabric store and we are so lucky to have them here in Atlanta. I have been visiting here for years and I’m sure I’ll be back there again once I get another house. Oh, won’t that be fun?!

Do you love fabric browsing too and how are the fabric stores in your area? We are SO fortunate to have some wonderful fabric shopping in Atlanta.

I’d love for you all to join me on my Facebook page! I’m getting more active over there on a daily basis and you never know what will show up, from project updates, to talking about day to day topics, and even sharing my new glasses I just got. Go on, you know you want to see those! So this is a great way to share inspiration, ask questions, and get feedback from lots of others too. So, come on over and join me, won’t you? I’d love for all of you to get involved too and show pics of rooms or decorating projects you might have questions with. There are plenty of girls who would love to chime in on that too and you’ll get lots of ideas. You can always click over from that Southern Hospitality Facebook badge as well and it will take you over there.

Thank you ALL so much for coming by this week and signing up for all the giveaways! I hope you enjoyed all of them and if you missed signing up for a few, they will be open for a few more days (just scroll down below this post to see all 11 of them). I’ll close them out by the middle of next week and announce the lucky winners. It was fun to have some exciting products to offer to my faithful readers (that would be YOU!) and I sincerely appreciate all of you who come by and visit me on a daily basis. It’s been 5 years to remember!

I’m back with another inspiring Feature Friday, with Courtney of A Thoughtful Place. A cute young mom of 2, Courtney has some great style and has really done a lot to her home. I know you are going to love it!

See what a cute family they are?!

Their living room is very stylish, with neutrals and bits of color. Courtney really has a great sense of style and puts it all together with panache.

From subway art, to carefully placed accessories and chairs, love her choice of colors and fabrics.

The rug is a wonderfully neutral, but anchors the space well.

A prettily accessorized bookcase.

Courtney turned a wall into a writing surface and wrote some of her favorite things at the bottom of the stairs.

Love, love the kitchen reno. They had white cabinets and the dark countertop when they moved in and added the white subway tile. I adore subway tile and would love to use it again.

This is one beautiful kitchen. I love the contrast of light cabinets and dark counters.

That subway tile is such a nice addition.

Courtney’s dining room has striped drapes mixed with dark table and white painted chairs.

She shows how she recovered the seats and painted the chairs, adding these pulls on the back.

Her son’s room is so fresh with greens and blues. Love this space!

Love the mix of patterns and textures.

And this organized toy space is so cute!

Don’t forget the girl’s room, pretty in pink.

Another new blogger that I have met this past year is Carmel, who blogs at Our Fifth House. Appropriately named because she and her family are, in fact, in their 5th house. Carmel has been busy making her house a home and has done a fantastic job of DIYing it and really stamping her personality on their space.

This brick Traditional home changed on the outside too and you can see Carmel’s home tour here.

“Be Nice or Leave” in the foyer coming in. Love those dark floors. I can tell Carmel is sassy just from this saying she has on the wall.

The family room is comfy and cozy and check out those drapes hanging there with the Ikat design.

.

She stenciled those on the ever-famous drop cloths. You can check out her tutorial on that too. See what a fab DIYer she is!

Her office space is very stylish and I love the zebra rug.

This dining room is my very fave in her whole house. I spotted this last summer when I did a post on stencils and never got over how pretty this room turned out with one stenciled wall. Isn’t it gorgeous?

She really puts it all together so well.

Just an overall pretty dining space.

She added this oh so pretty marble backsplash to her kitchen and it is still a work in progress.

And she also painted and glazed the cabinets.

Another DIY project, these painted stripes on the chairs with Words on top is a cute way to personalize a space. This was probably done with drop cloth fabric as well, so if you are looking for ways to cut the budget, this is a fun one.

I hope you enjoyed yet another real-life home with a real-life decorator. Aren’t we all on the same quest of making our homes cozy and happy for our families? Carmel has certainly done a great job with her home-sweet-home. Stop by Our Fifth House and say hello!

{Giveaway is Closed}

The Winner is: #208 Lorene Halfmann

January is an excellent time to be thinking about organization and it happens every year after Christmas. We all start thinking of ways to declutter and get everything in the house in tip-top shape.

You saw the pretty stencil yesterday and today, I’m going to show you the mostly finished room. The wall really does add a soft and subtle backdrop to the furniture in the space. My sister has been shopping on Craigslist, Home Decorators Collection, and with my new collaboration with Lowes, I was able to spend $100 Lowes card on helping her get this space organized.

Oh, what fun! Just for reference, the wall color is the same SW Comfort Gray that we used in her master bath.

Come along and I’ll show you where we are. We were hoping to get this table and chairs painted, but we didn’t get that finished yet. The table and chairs are a Craigslist find for $100. We are planning to paint it a fun Barcelona Orange color in Annie Sloan Chalkpaint. Won’t that be happy down here?

You can see how big the space is in their basement. Really a nice room to use for this. That’s my black bookcase and chair to the right.

Rug was ordered online.

That’s my brown leather sofa too that she is keeping safe for me. Those mirrored closet doors hold all her stacked Christmas bins neatly away. She has so much great storage at her house.

And she’s keeping my island for me too. Lauren painted that cute fleur-de-lis painting.

Here are the really fun organizing pieces she added. The Martha Stewart piece on the left came from Home Decorator’s Collection and she is going to enjoy using that for her wrapping paper and ribbon. The cute cube storage is what we found at Lowes. It came in a box and we put it all together ourselves. It was a bit like Lucy and Ethel do Tool Time, but we made it through. Those fabric storage drawers are great for hiding the clutter and they came from Lowes as well.

We also found these pretty rattan baskets at Lowes and they are another great option for hiding the clutter. Pretty and functional, you gotta love that! Check out Lowes Creative Ideas website for lots of great ideas.

She’s going to really have fun with all this organization at her fingertips.

She also found that pretty bookcase on Craigslist for $75. That’s a deal, I love it.

So, are you doing some organization yourself this month? Did you feel the unmistakable pull of de-cluttering like everyone does this month? It seems that the first of the year is the optimal time to start the year off right and start putting “stuff” in its place.

This beautiful updated 1940’s suburban cottage update in Charlotte, NC really caught my eye this month in House Beautiful. It’s fun to see so much color done well and I think you’ll enjoy the tour as much as I did.

Designer Lindsey Coral Harper did a great job of adding a sofa in the kitchen, she painted some dated old wood bright blue, and used upholstered headboards throughout.

There are lots of great ideas to take away from this feature and I loved seeing all the colors used throughout the house. Color is not dead!

The entryway sports new hemp grasscloth above the dark brown below. This looks like a stencil and could easily be done on a budget.

Here’s the old paneling painted up in a cozy blue shade.

The family room gets a good dose of color too, but not too strong.

This pretty Benjamin Moore Stem Green livens up the guestroom. See, she is not afraid of color. I love a gutsy mix.

The master bedroom is more subdued in gray.

The dining room is a nice mix of traditional with modern touches.

Master bath is serene in cool marble.

I love the kitchen in grays and yellows. I could definitely wake up to this every morning.

This photo from the cover is my favorite of the sofa in the kitchen. The vibrant yellow walls really liven this space up and mixed with gray is still serene.

Curtain panels in the living room in fabric by Kathryn Ireland is where the color pallet was drawn in this room.

Another guestroom is splashed with bold blue walls and lightened up by the white and red accented bedding. I love this look.

I really enjoyed the color and how pretty each room is. This is a great looking update and she didn’t use all the same color palette, so see how you can mix it up and break the rules? You can read the entire interview with the designer over at House Beautiful.

We are about to do some decorating around this place! And you know how I love a good before and after.

My parent’s master bedroom and bath is not that big, but it’s time for an update. The bathroom was built in the 70′s and it hasn’t been updated since the mid-80′s when we were cuckoo for wallpaper. Smack me if I ever do wallpaper like this again.

Yikes, does it need a fresh start about now.

Cue the happy music! I’m very excited to have been chosen to join the Lowe’s Creative Ideas blog team and we are getting the opportunity to redo some spaces and blog about them. And we’ll be giving away some giftcards along the way too. I know y’all won’t mind that!

February is bathroom month and since I don’t have my own house right now and I GET to redo a bathroom, guess who benefits from this great perk?

Yep, my sweet mama gets a whole new bathroom! I’m so excited to be able to do this for her and she is tickled to pieces to spruce up this old space.

This house was built around 1973 or so and the vanity has not changed in all that time. We have a speckled green and white laminate in here with a hand-made vanity that my dad built all those years ago. You can imagine how excited she will be to get a brand spankin’ new vanity, sink and faucet in here? My Lowe’s perk of $500 will cover the new vanity and countertop.

There’s me in my fancy schmancy work clothes. See how I look most days.

It is nothing fancy, but has served them well for about 40 years now, but the new one is going to be beautiful. Oh, and the wallpaper, it’s coming down too. It is WAY past its prime. I asked mom if she would miss it. She assured me she would not.

Neutral tile in the shower, so that is good.

We are getting a pretty new glass shower door in here.

Mom and I went shopping and found this bedding at Belk Home store. It’s a beautiful botanical with cute birds and branches on it. I think she will really enjoy this bedding set and it’s cotton and not all shiny like many of those bed in a bag sets.

It comes with the quilt, 2 shams and bedskirt and she got a really good deal, on sale, extra % off because it was the last one on display and a coupon, brought it to $162 total.

Love the colors and this sweet bird.

We had already planned to redo their bedroom and bathroom way before this opportunity came along, so this will just be the icing on the cake to get to replace their old vanity and countertop. It’s going to be so nice! Of course, my dad was completely happy with it just the way it is.

Men!

So, the wallpaper is coming down this week and we will begin painting. I’m putting my wonderful beadboard wallpaper in here too with a chairrail and we’ll be painting above with Sherwin Williams Quietude. It’s going to be such a change!

If you have never stripped wallpaper, it is such a pain. You are supposed to be sure the wall is primed underneath before putting up wallpaper, but apparently this one was not done. This paper is coming off in big and small strips. Underneath is the paper backing, which will then have to be sprayed down with hot water and scraped off. The backing is not hard to get off once you get to that layer, just takes some effort to remove it all with a scraper. That cream stuff on the right is the backing which will be wet down and scraped off to get down to the sheetrock. Then we’ll paint!

Some of it comes off in big strips, but not all, so it can be a tedious job. We are all 3 working on getting it down and have made huge progress already.

Here’s the bedroom as it is now and it is going to be much lighter and brighter feeling with the new bedding. We’ll keep the walls creamy and get rid of the border. New drapery panels too. Not sure what color for the panels, but maybe a chocolate brown or we could go with that soft blue/green as well.

It’s time to lose the blue swag light fixture too and probably will add a pretty lamp on the nightstand.

They are not fancy people, but I know my mom is going to enjoy her newly decorated spaces. It’s going to feel like a new house.

Here’s what our plan looks like so far. New bedding and the rug that I received from my Shaw campaign will go in the room. We looked for bedding that would work with this rug and I think it is going to be pretty. We are painting the bedroom Antique White and the bathroom Quietude by Sherwin Williams. The vanity and countertop are both from Lowes and we will find a light fixture and faucet there too.

Of course, I’ll show you all the details when we are finished, sometime at the end of February.

Edited: Several of you made me 2nd guess the bedding and rug and after brainstorming with my sister and looking at it in light at home, we agreed that the bedding wasn’t working. We’ve already found a great choice, a striped Tommy Bahama set at Steinmart. Stay tuned for the final later on! Thanks for all your comments!

She loves shades of blue, mixed with brown and the overall feel is light and airy. Her living room is cozy and spacious.

She does a great job of accessorizing and bringing in some fun items to complete her spaces.

Dining room is beautifully done.

I love how she uses accessories with care, not too many or too little.

She’s gone black in the kitchen on the cabinets and with yellow walls, it is still bright and light.

Her office space is very fun and funky with a little hot pink thrown in.

This is a stencil project she did on a plain dresser from Ikea and added this fretwork in gold. You can read all about that project here and it is a great makeover! From plain to glam.

Her craft space is also pretty and glam.

Those yellow drapery panels add so much pizazz to her space.

Even her laundry room is cute and stylish!

I know you enjoyed this home tour from this Texas decorator as much as I did!

Those folks at Pantone have declared their new color of the year to be Tangerine Tango. The last post I did about this was back in 2010, when turquoise was given the spotlight by Pantone and became the “it” color. And boy, did we go for turquoise in a big way.

From Pantone: Tangerine Tango, a spirited reddish orange, continues to provide the energy boost we need to recharge and move forward.

OK, then….I’m all for that. Anything that can help recharge and move forward, I’m all for.

So, who of you can get behind Tangerine? OK, I’ll say it. I’m not a big fan of orange or tangerine. That has never been a fave color for me to decorate with, so I think I’ll pass. I do think it’s an interesting color and certainly, in small doses it is not so bad. I rounded up a few pics to show off tangerine and to see what you all think about it!

Here’s Tangerine Tango in full glory, all vivid and bright. It’s really a happy color and even though orangey tones are not my fave, I can definitely see using this as a pop of color.

Now, I will admit that this pic of a muted corally orange mixed with the soft aqua blue is very pretty. I sourced this pic on Pinterest and I think it came from Better Homes and Gardens, but not all pics over there are pinned properly. I have not done a post yet on Pinterest, but I will soon!

Tangerine on fingernails, now that’s a big yes for me. In a minute! Essie’s Tangerine

(Designseeds.com)

Now this pic really is yummy and shows just how well that pretty aqua and orange play together. Isn’t this a beautiful way to show how colors work together? I found this site on Pinterest and it has some great visuals.

(kitchennmall.net)

In the kitchen, an orange mixer could be just the pop of color you need on the countertop.

This room from Coco and Kelley shows a bold move of orange and blue mixed together. Those 2 are made for each other.

Fiestaware has a new color out called Tangerine too. Those could also make a big statement in the kitchen.

(ebay)

A sweater in this coral orange color could be a fun pick-me-up for Winter months.

Lauren from Pure Style Home chose a pretty orange/tangerine hue for her front door and it’s positively beautiful.

(southofmarket)

This chair is stately, masculine and so pretty with the turned feet and nailhead trim and yes even in orange.

My friend, Roeshel, at DIY Showoff, did a guestroom makeover on a budget using these orangey wingback chairs and I do love how her room turned out. See how well they pair with the blue in the room? It’s a very soothing room.

(Target)

Now this chair, I could go for! Beautiful bird print in bold tangerine would really wake up a room.

(ZGallerie)

Bedding in orange is also a bold move. Mixed with gray or blue, orange is a really good choice. But, if just depends on if you like the color or not.

So, do you or don’t you??

Me, not so much. I can pick a lot of colors I like a LOT more than Tangerine Tango. It’s not likely that this hue will be in my top picks for decorating a room around.

How about you?

Could you do a pop of this color or not? Can you see adding Tangerine to your decor at all this year?

For more paint color inspiration, I have been meaning to tell you about Kristen, from Favorite Paint colors.

I love meeting all sorts of bloggers across the blogosphere. From big homes to small cottages and everything in between, blogland has some beautiful homes out there to browse. When I came across Cailan’s shining spot on the web, Everyday Lovely, I was immediately drawn in to her beautiful photos and her simple elegance and the way she puts her home together. She is a thrifter, like I am and aren’t we drawn to those who share the same ideas we do about home and life and family? Cailan has created a warm and hospitable home for her family of 5 out of vintage and thrifted finds and I think you will enjoy it as much as I do. Cailan is my kind of girl!

Cailan shared with me via email that after all the hard work on putting her home together, that they have recently found out they are moving for a new job from Colorado to Iowa. Hopefully, change will be good and they will be settled into another lovely home.

Say hello to Cailan, a pretty young mom of 3 (2 of them are twins). You can imagine how busy Cailan must be. A newly painted black door makes her home inviting.

Inside the front door, Cailan stenciled the inside of the coat closet and gave it some organization. Isn’t it fun how a simple stencil project like this can add so much to a lowly closet? Oh, and she added old botanicals to the top of the closet too.

Their living room is cozy and inviting as well. I love sharing real life smaller homes that live well and Cailan’s is a great example.

She’s added some of her vintage treasures to the mantel, along with old books. You can never go wrong with decorating with books.

The dining room feels nostalgic too.

Master bedroom with cozy linens.

Cailan created this neat botanical wall too, above her beadboard and dresser. Very pretty way to display old book plates.

Love her kitchen with creamy white cabinets.

I totally adore the big fat lantern above this beautifully painted turquoise table. You can totally mix things up these days and it works. That is what I love about design style now. There is no right or wrong, but training your eye to mix things up, you can get a totally unique look using older furniture together.

She has twins, a boy and girl and they share this sweet room, done traditionally, but with vintage accents. How cute is this?

Cailan found this old iron bed out thrifting and recently painted it a glossy bright yellow for her son’s room eventually. She set it up for a photo shoot and boy, does it shine.

Isn’t is sweetly pretty with the blue pillow on the bed?

The flowers add a wonderful touch too.

Thanks for stopping by for today’s Feature Friday! I hope that I’ve introduced you to yet another fun and inspiring blogger. Be sure to stop by and say hello to Cailan, tell her I sent you, and browse Everyday Lovely.

Her blog certainly lives up to its name!

Happy Friday! I’m heading back up to a lovely spot myself this weekend, back to Angela’s beautiful Waynesville cottage that I shared with you a few months ago. I’m taking a couple of my girlfriends for some R&R time in the NC mountains. You can be sure I’ll come back newly inspired!
