This is the third time we’ve stayed at this particular condo complex (in case you want to check it out, Dunes of Seagrove)  in Seagrove, FL and even though it rained every other day, we still had some fun and relaxation.  With this view, how can you go wrong?  We have thoroughly enjoyed staying at these condos since they are tucked away from the main road and they are right on the beach.  And they are just down the road from Seaside.  It’s not as busy here as it is in Destin.  We also have our favorite restaurants which I’ll share in another post.   We’ve stayed in 2 different units here and most of them have a great view.

Go with me for a stroll to the beach and you’ll see what I mean.  The noise in the background is just the wind blowing, but I think you’ll like it.

Truly, if you’ve never been to the Gulf in Florida, you are missing out!

We met up once again with our friends, Kat and George for a delish Italian dinner.  If you haven’t followed this story, Kat and I met through blogging back in 2007 and met up when we went to the beach that year and have been friends ever since.  We actually dog sat for their dog, Daisy, last year at their house and had a ball.  Kat and I just pick up like old friends when we get together and our hubbies like each other too.  Blogging truly has been a blessing.  I love all the friends I have made!  Kat wrote about our shopping trip (click that link) and I’ll get to that later too.  Their daughter is getting married in the spring on the beach, so Kat is really busy with planning that.

My  hubby, Peter, sure enjoyed some fishing time on the beach.  He hung out in the surf in spite of getting rained on some of the time and caught 3 bluefish, which we promptly ate for lunch 2 days.   Take a look at this video for more of the water and us talking on the beach:

This was in the fridge! And HE cooked them up for lunch for us.

Along with  some shrimp we bought for boiling, but this is the bluefish that he caught.  YUMMY!

But, the first bit of business before we get to that is the Sticky Life giveaway.  A big woo-hoo to Jamie at Blonde Mom Blog, who won the giveaway.  Congrats, Jamie and have fun with it!

I got 2 pretty things from the antiques guy, this gorgeous green platter was $2 and would be pretty hanging on the wall like this pic shows.  It’s a USA platter and nicely crazed.

From the same guy, this loverly McCoy vase was $2.  Love the shape of it and it will be nice to add to my white collection.

I’ve got plans for these 2 white frames to go in my master bath water closet and they will be perfect for a pair of shell prints I’m ordering from this talented artist.  I’m going to put 8×10 prints in here and add an additional mat around them to make them work in these 16×20 frames.  I love to use smaller prints in large frames, it gives them a lot of impact.  The frames were $5 each and brand new, so I can’t beat that deal. They already have nice mats and glass.

On the way to Grandma Eleanor’s house on Saturday to pick her up for another day of sewing, I stopped by one last sale and found this beautiful upholstery weight fabric, gorgeous colors that will look great in the den.  I thought about making pillows out if it, but I think now I’m just going to cut it into a nice big throw  by hemming it and adding some pretty fringe around it.  The back side is nice and soft too. At $10 for this 2 1/2 yard piece of beautiful material, it will be fabulous on the chocolate sofa.

And see how pretty it looks with the blue and brown houndstooth fabric I’m making pillows out of??  I loved the blue in this fabric mixed with gold and brown and it has a bit of orangey-red in it too.  I’m sure she paid a lot more for this new from the fabric store.

I’ll plan to continue Thrifty Mondays at least through September and then we’ll probably stop until next Spring.  We still have lots of  yardsales around here all the way through October, but I know many of you will slow down.

Beauty products at yardsales?

Did you know you can find cologne and perfume at yardsales, along with brand new lipstick, like Clinique and Estee Lauder? Yep, it’s true. I found all 3 of these just this spring at the sales. I never have to go and buy new cologne for myself now. The one on the left is Ralph Lauren Romance, for $4. Estee Lauder Pleasures Intense was $5 and Ralph Lauren Safari was $3.  So, I’ll be smelling pretty for a long time to come.

I also find many brand new tubes of Clinique or Estee Lauder lipstick in just-right colors for me for usually 50 cents to $2. Now, that’s a bargain, if you price those at the department stores. It’s a no brainer for me. These are lipsticks that come in the freebie packs and someone decides they don’t like the color and to the yardsale it goes, brand new never used.

It wasn’t a terribly exciting yardsale weekend, but I found a few useful things, like these green acrylic glasses for 25 cents each.  I think they match that pitcher I found recently too.

Always on the lookout for good books, this is one I haven’t read by one of my fave authors.  I may save it for our beach trip that’s coming up in September.  There’s nothing better than sitting on the beach reading a good book. We decided to wait til school starts and take our beach trip later this year.

And I love to find workout clothes in great condition for cheap.  These 3 Nike workout tops were $1 each, much better than paying even TJ Maxx prices and these are all in near perfect condition. I will put them to good use very soon. And last for this week, an Eddie Bauer denim skirt for $3.  I have a few Eddie Bauer pieces and they are very well made and great quality.  Just my size too.  They all got washed in the washing machine as soon as I got home and then into my closet.

So, that’s it for me this week.  Oh, and remember that Sid Dickens tile I found a couple weeks ago for $3??  Sold it on Ebay for $147, quite a turn around, don’t you think?

I’ll have a few more posts this week and then we are heading up to my parent’s house in NC for a few days.  Eating veggies and visiting.  I hear tell we are having a fish fry with homemade ice cream one day.  Yippee!

The Longest Yardsale, doesn’t that just SOUND fun?? This is the 3rd time I’ve been to this event and this was actually the most fun I’ve had ever and it wasn’t because of all the great things I found.  I didn’t buy a thing.  All the excitement and fun of the day was enhanced with the two girls I went with, Susie and Layla.  We had a blast!  I’ve met both of them before, but it was the first time they had met each other.  It was truly like meeting up with old girlfriends, we talked non-stop and just had SO much fun.  If you get the chance to do this sale with some girlfriends, do it. You won’t regret it, the time spent was just precious and the memories will last forever.

So, come along and I’ll show you a few things that we saw on our yardsale adventure.  We got a little bit of a late start and after getting into Gadsden, AL, we started off in one direction and quickly realized that we were not on the main drag.  Asking a couple of the locals didn’t really help either, but we finally got back on the main highway where all the big sales were held and we were on our merry way and spent about 4 or 5  hours checking it all out.

We spent a lot of time in Susie’s SUV, we laughed, we talked, we had fun girltime, and we shopped.  A lot.  And got really, really HOT!  What is hotter than Alabama in August?  I think we rival the worst of hot.

We met up with some interesting characters along the way.   The sweet older man who owned the Bichon, Cosmo, wanted to make sure we were saved before we left his booth and he shared the gospel with us in a drawn out and meandering manner.  We had to politely tell him we were indeed  and needed to get going.

There’s always plenty of furniture here at the sales. This one was not a bargain at $300 and it would need plenty of TLC to get it looking good.  The white paint job looks better in this pic than it did in person.

This cute hutch, however, was a pretty good deal at $50.  I can definitely see this painted either white or black.

The 3 amigos, having some fun.  I’m the Vintage Chick and Susie is the Queen Bee.    We were already sweating profusely by this time.  This is the stop where we were talking to 2 older Southern men, who wanted to show us all their stuff, old coins and some general junk. I wore my comfy leopard Crocs, perfect for an excursion like this.

This guy was too cute, showing us his weather machine and before we left, he took a few photos of Layla and Susie, as I talked to my hubby on the phone about the old coins.  We had to laugh about that later, that old man taking their pics.  Yep, lots of Old South characters along the Longest Yardsale route.

This is a typical set up along the way.  So much to look at.  We started getting so tired of getting out of the AC, that we’d do a drive by and look for interesting things to check out.

One of Susie’s treasures of the day was a small child’s shabby chair that she got for $4.  Really cute piece and I can’t wait to see where she puts it.

I love old side tables.  This one wasn’t a real bargain at $125, but pretty anyway with some nice detailing.

Here’s Layla, with her big treasure of the day, an old lamp that she is going to Pottery Barn up, for $8.  You can bet we won’t recognize the old Colonial look of this lamp when Layla’s finished putting her stamp on it.

This was my favorite old piece!  It was $75, but I have no place to put it.

Always plenty of vintage signs to be had too.  That’s all the photos I took at the Longest Yardsale. We had so much fun and hope to do it again next year.  And I hope y’all enjoyed going along with us!  You were all there in spirit for sure.

Susie stayed at my house a couple of nights, since it’s quite a drive from her home in Louisiana.  She wanted to hit Homegoods since she had never been to one, so we made a point of doing that on Saturday a.m.  On the way, we hit a couple of yardsales and a flea market that has just opened up near me, called Greystone Flea & Antiques, in the former Cindy’s Design Center, so you Birmingham girls should check it out.

I walked in the door and fell in love with a pair of shabby old aqua shutters.  After asking the booth owner the price, we settled on $80 for the pair and I took them home with me. Not my usual steal, but these are not that easy to find and I thought the price was pretty good for the pair.

So, my treasure was close to home, but I wouldn’t take anything for the fun we had on our yardsaling adventure.  Sweet friends, those two are!

Before I close this post, I’ve got to take a moment to wish my sweet hubby, Peter, a very Happy, Happy 50th Birthday on Monday.  We are eating chocolate cake (his favorite) today with his mom and grandma and celebrating my guy’s big day.  Happy Birthday, Hon!  Now I can rub in AARP to him when those envelopes start coming the mail with HIS name on them.

What’s more fun than a church flea market and yardsaling in Mountain Brook all in one weekend??  Nothin’, absolutely nothin’!  On Friday, I met up with one of my readers, Nancy here in Birmingham, for a fun shopping extravaganza at the local Briarwood Presbyterian Church flea market.  Oh my gosh, I think everyone who wasn’t working showed up for this one, but it was fun to go in and see what we could spot.  I came home with a few things, as did Nancy.

I even spotted a deal for my friend, Layla, at The Lettered Cottage.  See that pretty wooden sailboat I’m holding?  As soon as I walked in the door, there it was and I just had to get it for her.  I called her on my cell to tell her about it and see if she wanted it and she said, if you think I’ll like it, then definitely get it. And it was a $2 steal, could not pass it up.  Hope she loves it, I can see it in her cottage now.  In fact, I’m going to be meeting up with her and her friend, Sarah for the Longest Yardsale this coming weekend.  They are going for a couple of days and I am going to tag along only on Friday, but can’t wait!  What a blast we will have and of course, you’ll hear all about it too.

A funny thing happened on Friday, when I was in Hancock’s getting some string cut to repair a set of Roman shades I found awhile back.  There was a friendly young man waiting on me and he asked me if I was Ms. Southern Hospitality. I burst out laughing!  A big hello to Michael, who reads my blog daily!

I seem to have a thing for melamine bowls and these were 10 cents each. I love to have them around for the microwave or to hold a snack.  And besides, they’re lime green!

This pretty little Floraline planter was 10 cents. It was caked with dirt and not looking so good, but I washed it and it’s not bad at all now.  Who knows, it might get another plant.

This Haeger USA pottery vase was $3.  Love this piece.

And here’s Layla’s pretty sailboat.  It’s not real old, but pretty neat anyway.

So, on to Saturday, me and my niece, Lauren had a blast in Mountain Brook.  I don’t normally drive into Mountain Brook to yardsales, since I have so many out my way usually, but this weekend there were several all in the same vacinity, so it was the best bet for deals and I’m SO glad we went.

Lauren had her GPS with her, so she brought it along in the car and navigated for me.  It was a lifesaver, since I don’t know all those streets down there and it told us exactly where to turn for the next sale.

Driving through beautiful Mountain Brook, I took time to show you a few of the houses and they are stunners.  Clicking on that first link at the top for Mountain Brook will tell you more about the area, Birmingham’s ritziest part of the city.

This house was having a yardsale and they had some really nice things, but I especially loved their frontdoor with the lantern above and the roses climbing up the wall.  We didn’t buy anything here, but she had some gorgeous things.

At another sale, we saw this set of chairs and dining table, all for $175, not bad I thought.  The table legs were chunky and turned and would be great for a paint project.

This twin bed was pretty too, not sure how much it was.

And I thought seriously about this old needlepoint chair for $25, but decided not to get it.  I have no more room!

But, you know I didn’t leave empty handed.  Actually it was a smokin’ yardsale day.  Come and see….

This pretty metal trashcan was $2 and it will go in the beachy guestroom. Original pricetag on the bottom from some chi-chi little shop was $40.  I don’t think so.

And this pretty black tole planter was $1 and looks to be fairly old.

As was this Towle silverplate tray with little feet…yep, $1.

Check out these green polka-dot shoes (by Chinese Laundry).  Perfect condition, $2. When I showed them to my hubby, he said…yep, those look like some Rhoda-shoes.

I happened by the sale of one of the ladies I used to work with and she had some great things too.  I got this pretty old black chandy for $8 and it is going to go in my office nook.  I love it!  She and I had fun catching up too.

This find I fell in love with at first sight!  This is a pair of HEAVY IRON candle sconces (must weigh 25 lbs. each) and they were $20 for the pair.  A real steal for something this big.  They are very rusty already and I’ll just leave them as is.  Where am I putting them??   They are huge, which this picture doesn’t really show and I’ve already  hung them above the fireplace on either side of my picture.  I’ll show you that later on.

And this might be the best find of the day!  This is a Sid Dickens plaque.  In case you don’t know it, these are highly collectible.  I found 4 of these last year and resold them on Ebay for a small fortune.  We’ll see how this one does.  If you ever spot one of these at a yardsale, buy it!  The back is solid black with the Sid Dickens name on it.  I have no idea why they are so prized, but there are a lot of collectors for these plaster plaques and the demand is high.  This one is in perfect condition too and I paid $3 for it.  I’ll let you know how it goes, since I’ll be reselling it.

Hi,friends!  I hope you’ll all make yourself comfortable at my new place. Take off your shoes and enjoy.  There will be some tweaking to do with this new blog (fixing some broken links, etc.), but I’ll be working on those as I find them.  If you see something that is off, feel free to email me about it, thanks!  A BIG thanks to my blog designer, Darcy, at Graphically Designing for making the switch for me and holding my hand.  And not making me feel like an idiot at trying to learn a new program.

So, on to the Thrifty Party this week.  I got to a few sales, but really didn’t buy much at all.  And that’s OK, there’s always  next week, right?!

There are some fabulous views here in Birmingham and this was the sight from the back deck of a moving sale in Brook Highland.  Isn’t that WOW?!  It was so packed, I went through and looked as well as I could and grabbed only one thing.

This softly draping knit dress by Nina Leonard was $1!  Steal!  I  never found a size on it, but figured since it is a wrap-style dress it could work for me and it does just fine.  The sleeves were a little long (that hardly ever happens), so I’ll just push them up.  This isn’t a complete wrap dress, in that it’s not open all the way down, but only the middle section wraps  and I like it better that way.  I love that I can tighten it or loosen as needed.  You know, just in case I get fat or anything.

And with my $2 shoes from last week’s sale, a pretty thrifty outfit, all for $3.  The material is really comfortable too and you know I loved the print. Giraffe is it? Black and white is such a staple in my closet.  I looked online and found a link to QVC and they were selling the short sleeved version for $46, here.  But, it’s no longer available. I did get a deal!

Moving on, in my own neighborhood at a sale, I found this pretty lime green plastic pitcher for 50 cents. Always nice to have in the summer and it will coordinate with my other outdoor dish finds.

This pretty tiny little oil painting was 25 cents. I just love these little vintage paintings and at that price, wasn’t about to leave it.  It will look cute on an easel on a bookshelf.

We’ve added 2 hummingbird feeders in the backyard this year and have had a ball watching those cute little creatures, so when I spotted this iron hummingbird, I had to get it.  At $3, it was my splurge of the day.I stopped by one of the big thrift stores in Alabaster since I was over that way for an in-home consultation last week and found one thing to bring home. This green print skirt from Old Navy was more than I usually spend, but I love the style of these skirts, so for $5, wasn’t too bad.  It has some pretty ribbon trim too, a great summer skirt. This is not a yardsale piece, but you have to see what I won in a giveaway.  Lara Harris, a wonderful artist, had a giveaway and I was lucky enough to win it.  I sent her a pic of the photo of my iron urn (from a yardsale of course) on my header, so it seems only fitting to have this captured on canvas.  I love it, Lara!  I’ll have to find the right spot for this 5×7″ beauty.
