Winner is #23: Shary. Congrats!
You know how much I love to update old furniture with paint. It’s one of the easiest and most cost-effective ways to update and transform furniture into something desirable. I’ve been painting furniture for years and now there are so many new products out there to help this process along. From spray paint to chalk paint, there is a paint for all occasions.
The trend in the last couple of years has continued to evolve by painting those old castoffs with brightly color hues. It’s a great way to add that pop of color in the room to really wake up your space. I myself totally love this trend!
My sister found that table and chairs set on Craigslist for $100 and it is the perfect addition to her craft room. But, it’s kinda ugly, don’t you think? and pssst, there’s a $50 Home Depot giftcard giveaway at the end, so read it all, OK?!
Not a fan of blonde orangey wood, are you?
So, we are going to transform those pieces and make them SO much better. With this luscious new Barcelona Orange shade by Annie Sloan chalk paint, this table and chairs will have a whole new lease on life.
We painted 2 coats of Annie Sloan chalk paint on these pieces and the finish is really nice after the 2 coats are applied. I am really loving the ASCP so much and want to use it more and more on many other pieces. This was my first time using it on furniture and it does have a very dry chalk like feel when dry.
Amazingly smooth finish too, but it needs wax. I am going to finish this set up with Annie Sloan Dark Wax on top and that should complete this Craigslist find into a functional and pretty craft table. I’ll be back later to show how we waxed it!
By the way, you can order Annie Sloan chalk paint from my sponsor, Stylish Patina, and her button is on my sidebar. As soon as I get that Dark Wax, we’ll finish this project and I’ll do a how-to on the whole thing. I did add some clear wax on the table, which is what you see here, but the Dark wax will complete the look.
So, are you liking this new trend of brightly painted furniture? I think it is such a fun way to add some pretty pizazz to otherwise bland and dated furniture, don’t you?
Here are some more great examples around blogland of brightly painted hues of furniture pieces. See what you think about these!
This turquoise beauty is from Natty by Design and she has it going on with painting older pieces of furniture that need a new life.
From Country Living, see how that pop of orange on the coffee table adds so much spunk to the room. You can see bits of the same color on the pillows sprinkled around the room too.
My blog friend, Emily, painted this campaign dresser for her office in a springy green and it is a great mix for her space. I can’t wait to see what she does in her new office.
From Design Sponge, this dresser started off as a standard issue brown wood French inspired piece. There’s certainly nothing wrong with brown wood, I have plenty of it myself, but if you have a piece that has seen better days, what better way to shake it up than to paint it a sunny yellow.
I have always adored the way Myra transformed this vintage desk into something so pretty and lively for her home. Love it!
From Opal Never Shouts, this blue painted chest is such a vibrant color and perfectly at home with the other colors surrounding it in the room.
This jewelry chest came in a cherry finish and was transformed by Repurposed Life Designs in a happy yellow and how much more fun would this be to wake up to?
From Good Life of Design, here’s another example of an older piece brought up to date with this meadow green paint. I’m in love with green painted anything, so this is so pretty to me.

My, there is so much around here I want to update. I think I would start with my chest of drawers that I have in the dining room. It holds my table clothes and runners. It is white but needs to be green. Yeah, I’d to the chest of drawers first.

I do like this trend of painted furniture…I’m trying to work up the courage to tackle an old desk…just need to find the perfect color!
Lisa says
Ive been trying to get the nerve to paint my first piece- a sideboard! I’m dying to see it in a seafoam green!
Linda says
I’ve got a great maple buffet in my dining area. You know, the standard maple item, three drawers down the middle with a door on each side. My holiday plates and linens are inside. It would look great painted a nice yellow, I think, to pop some soft color into my sage green room. What do you think?
Sarah says
Oh my gosh I’m in Home Depot at least once a week. If I won I would use the money to buy wood & paint so that I could build a new headboard for our master bedroom! 🙂
Nancy says
Oh, I’m just crazy about the trend of painted furniture! I’m thinking that the rocking chair in one of our guest rooms would look beautiful with a new life full of color!

I would buy paint for my daughter’s old bedroom furniture. I love all the beautiful colors shown in this posting.

You are so right, Rhoda! That orange color really makes your sister’s craft room sing. I have that same shade in AS, but I haven’t decided what to paint yet. Can’t wait to see what the dark wax does to the table and chairs.Oh, I would buy some plants from Home Depot if I won!
Celia says
I would like to update my dining room. I need new seatcovers for my chairs and some paint.

I am in the middle of transforming my college son’s old room and turning it into the guest room. Right now, it’s an army green color and my ambition is to turn in into a shabby chic retreat. I’ve already taken a yard sale brass chandelier and transformed it into something beautiful, but it looks crazy with the “camo” walls. I need paint and beadboard really bad!
Peggy Daley says
We bought our king headboard for 20.00 about 20 years ago. It is still an ugly cream Color! I would love it to be e fun bright item! I would liven up our bedroom! MAYBE!

Home Depot is my home-away-from-home! I have 2 bookcases in serious need of a paint intervention.
I didn’t know that Annie Sloan made a dark wax. I’ve used dark Minwax ( it’s not easy to find!) and love the soft sheen. I’ll be interested to hear about the AS version.

I’ve been working on converting an old RV into a space for myself. I’d use the $50 to paint my craft / sewing table something funky and bright and maybe pick up a small rug to keep my wood floors cozy in the winter.
Julie says
i would soooo love to refinish a dresser or vanity!
Sue B. says
Spring is coming and I really want to liven up my entry with a focal color piece of furniture.
Joni Klarman says
I would repaint a campaign dresser I have been wanted to redo for months. I also have a cabinet that could use some sprucing up. I love me some home improvement stores…..

Hello Rhoda,
LOVE Barcelona Orange!! I painted a wood chair in Barcelona and clear and dark waxed it…. luscious!! The dark wax will knock down the brightness of the orange to a fabulous butterscotch hue.
Remember to use the clear wax as a kind of dark wax eraser if you get too much dark on your pieces. Have fun

If I won, I would use the money towards a new rug in the living room to give it a new personality.

I have been painting furniture for the last 10 years. I used to buy old children’s rocking chairs and paint them in vibrant colors. I also did my daughter’s dresser that was 25 years old. I have a closet full of old rocking chairs (children’s) I would love to paint and give as gifts to new parents. The $50 Home Depot card would really come in handy!
