Feature Friday: Ruby’s Southern Porch

I’ve shared some of my friend, Ruby’s house in the past, her beautiful kitchen and master bedroom/bathroom and she and I have had a blast the last few years pulling her spaces together.  She and her hubby built on a screened porch a few years ago and she and I hit the yardsales, scoring all sorts of great wicker pieces for her large porch.  She has a beautiful porch and it was first decorated around 2003 with a black floral fabric that was very trendy back then.  Ruby felt the need to freshen up her porch and bring a little more color out there, so she and I got fabric samples and played around with them.

Here’s the BEFORE of the porch, all the wicker was painted black and the black and gold fabrics were great back then.

Porch Before

This porch served them well for many years, but it was feeling a little tired.

021

We found all this wicker at a yardsale back then and she got such a steal on it all.  It completely made her porch.  The round glass top pedestal table and 4 chairs were part of that score as well.

Back then, we were all smitten with painting diamonds on the floor, which got started when our friend, Debbie, painted black and white diamonds on her porch, which I’ve shared before too.  Ruby’s diamonds were gold and white, but again, it’s time for an update.

You’re going to love what Ruby has done with her porch this time around!

Porch After

The gold and white checks became chocolate brown and white.  I’m taking a page from this and you’ll more than likely see brown and white diamonds on my porch too.  This will go great with my chocolate wicker as well.  I did black and white diamonds on a small little porch I used to have in Georgia and loved them.

013

Ruby’s porch is plenty big enough for entertaining.

018

All the wicker got a fresh coat of paint in chocolate brown.   She has a spray gun and sprayed them outside.  I’ll have to find out the exact color she used.

046

The glass table is great for outdoor dining.

033

Their property sits high above a trickling stream in the trees, just like a treehouse.  The new wall color is just perfect and we both fell in love with it.  It might be the perfect springy lime green, called Fennel by Pratt and Lambert, it can also be mixed at Sherwin Williams, as they have the formula too.  Just ask for it!  This color will find it’s way into my house too.  Ruby’s daughter-in-law used this hue in their house and we both loved it so much.  I’m always on the lookout for a great green and this is one of those.

020

This sofa was a real find earlier this spring.  Ruby called me one day and said, I’ve found a fullsize wicker sofa on Craigslist, go with me to pick it up.  And I did.  She got this for around $80, if I remember right and it is a Henry Link brand, which is very expensive.  She had the cushion made out of that pretty green fabric. We played around with all these fabrics coming up with fave combos.

022

She had all the cushions covered at a local shop.  The outdoor rug came from Homegoods and she has another on on order (a striped one that coordinate with the colors in this floral one).  The bigger rug will anchor the sofa and seating area.

051

The sofa is fullsize, perfect for napping, which is just what Ruby was looking for.

024

A vintage lamp from her mother-in-law is perfect out here.

026

The soaring ceiling really makes the room tree-housey.

027

A pretty ceiling fan makes this outdoor room perfect for hanging out.

017

These chairs got a new paint job too and the main fabric, a pretty colorful floral takes center stage.

039

A side table holds some pretty accessories and a lamp.

014

There are those fabrics that we stared at for a few weeks.  Love them!

030

I love these large modern florals and the colors in this one are so springy and easy to live with.  The blue coral fabric was a splurge, but well worth it.

035

A close up look at the brown and white diamonds.

036

A yardsale lamp gets a new paint job too.

037

Treat the walls on a porch just like another room and hang some things up there.

052

Plants on a planting cart.

045

Overlooking their small but pretty backyard.  The rest of the yard is just trees, beautiful trees.

Hope you enjoyed this respite from the summer heat in Ruby’s newly renovated porch.  Aren’t the fabrics so yummy?!

In fact, I am getting so inspired that I am going to host a summer Porch Party, so I hope you’ll write up a post about your porch and let’s share ideas. I am getting so excited about my own little screened porch, I can hardly stand it.

How about Wed., June 13th, we’ll have a fun Summer Porch linky party?  Come back here and share your porches:  Front porch, side porch, screened porch, sunroom, deck porch, any porch will do!

Won’t that be fun?!

I just have to tell y’all that I am so fortunate and incredibly blessed to be doing what I love to do and get invited to so many fun events.  Wednesday evening, I went with a couple of friends to the launch party of the new Southern Living/Ballard Designs tabletop accessories and we got to tour the just opened Southern Living Idea House in Senoia, GA.  I can’t tell you how gorgeously beautiful this house is!  I took a zillion pics and can’t wait to share them with all of you.

Oh, and I got my pic taken with the Editor of Southern Living himself, Lindsay Bierman.  Pinch me now!  Southern Living is one of my TOP magazine loves.  So enjoyed meeting the Southern Living folks and Ballard Designs girls too.

As soon as I can, I’ll get those pics up!

I love the brown and the floor is perfect. Really excited to see your porch in the near future. Can’t wait to see your pics from the SL Idea House. You are blessed but so deserving.

  3. Ruby’s porch is fabulous. I love it. So pretty and the checked floor is gorgeous. Hugs, Marty

  4. Just put Fennel on the notes page in my iphone. I have a list of paint colors there so I do not forget them!! Love the green, brown and aqua on the porch!! I am a green gal…in fact I have my laundry room done in one of the greens you showed us in your old house. And I love it!! Can’t wait to see the tablescapes….I am sure they are awesome! Thanks for sharing all these great ideas with us Rhoda.

  5. The porch is lovely. What a lucky lady!

I have a small porch with wrought iron furniture. The cushions need replacing…what kind of shop would I take them to?? Any idea what one would pay for just recovering cushions vs. having them make all new cushions? I would need TEN cushions so I’m sure it’s out of my price range.

Can you paint wrought iron, do you know?? Also, did she PAINT her vinyl SIDING? Didn’t know that was possible!

    • Kate, you could take them to a local upholster shop & see what they would charge for doing cushions for you. I think you could get them done fairly reasonable, considering the cost for new. It’s worth checking into.

Yes, you can paint wrought iron. I would prime it with metal spray paint and get a good metal spray paint to cover it. It should work great!

She has concrete siding on her house, not vinyl, so yes it does get painted.

  6. LOVE! LOVE! LOVE! What is there not to love!! It DOES feel like a tree house!! Just lovely! YOURS WILL BE SPECTACULAR!! I am trying to bring the Lake House sunroom alive …….I think I am going to spray some old, old wicker brick red as that is my accent color! Wish me luck! Can’t wait to see the Porch Party…I wish I had a blog to show you the Lake House Sunroom! ~Nancy

  7. Love the brown and lime green color cmbo!!!! I keep thinking we may have to build a screened in porch at the new house:):) We’ll see. Can’t wait for your porch party! Ruby’s porch looks gorgeous. XO, Pinky

  8. Perfect. Love the color combo and all the cute fabrics. I also love the diamond floor. So whimsical. I’m sure they will be spending much time out there. So comfy and relaxing.

  9. Renee S. says:

Ruby, love your porch. I thought it looked great before, but it is just perfection now. I know y’all are enjoying sitting out there. I can’t believe you painted that floor again. I did mine once and was ready to quit by the time I got to the second row. What a job!! Did you have someone do it or did you do it yourself? If you hired out, I need to find him. I’m never tackling that job again, but I so love how yours looks.

  10. Looks great!!! would love to know what she did with the old sofa? I love the black iron!

    • Ellen, she had brought that iron sofa in from her open deck (right outside the porch), so it was moved back out there.

  11. What a great transformation! I’m loving the greens right now too. It sounds like you have had an amazing week getting to tour the Southern Living house and having a paint party today. God’s blessings are always wonderful. Have a great weekend.
Oh, and I love the idea of a porch party. I just have a deck but it is one of my favorite areas.

  12. Tardevil says:

Her updated porch is gorgeous! Love the new couch! The green paint and black diamond porch is perfect. Would you mind finding out the name of the chair fabric (print, not blue coral) she used? Waverly, etc. Can’t wait to see pictures of the SL house.

    • I’ll see what I can find out from Ruby.

      • Loved the porch!!!! I would also like to know the name & source of the blue print fabric. Also the blue coral too. It is beautiful. Rhoda, I can’t wait to see your new home decorated! Keep up the good work.

  13. Tardevil says:

p.s. That retro green glass lamp is awesome, too!

  14. Barbara says:

    Hi Rhoda,

Do you think the brown paint she used is the same color as the brown wicker patio furniture you have? If so, when you find out the color, please let me know because I have a wicker piece that needs to be painted that same color of brown. Thank you, and thanks for the wonderful ideas! Barbara

  15. I love her screened in porch. That would be where I would sit all summer with my iced tea.

  16. Rhoda, I would love to have a stunning screened in porch like your friends.
What a deal on that CL couch!! Love the fabrics and great job on the floor.

I can’t wait to see your screened in porch, SOUTHERN LIVING should do an article about yours and have you showcase their new line!! Mary

  17. Rhoda, your friend’s porch looks like a wonderful place to spend time relaxing and enjoying the view. The two of you did a great job of pulling everything together. I hope my porch will be presentable in time for your party. It sounds fun. I am hosting a Grill, BBQ and Picnic Party on June 17-23 if you would like to come. You would be a most honored guest. Can’t wait to see your own porch. Judging from what you have before, I know it will be pretty.———–Shannon

  18. What an amazing space! I love the colors!

  19. What a beautiful space for relaxing! And a full length sofa just right for a nap! What a deal she got. I like the lighter and more subtle colored diamonds she used in her initial decor. I think that the dark brown overpowers the room and distracts from the lovely decorating.

  20. Merri Jo says:

The porch is a truly lovely transformation! Love the color combo and fabrics~~can you source the blue coral fabric, please. I would love some pillows with it!

  21. Sherry Williams says:

That porch is lovely! What a relaxing place to spend lazy summer days. I can’t wait to see what you do with yours!

I would also like to know the name of the two fabrics, the floral and the blue coral. They are gorgeous!!

  22. I’ve always dreamed of having a screened porch! I really like the checkered floors too. Also want to tell you how great your house is looking! You all are really inspiring in the DIY department :)

  23. Rhoda,
Love Ruby’s screened porch. The newly covered cushions and painted checkered floor make this room unique. I envy you gals with screened in porches. This time of year we are the main course for the saber toothed green headed flies and mosquitoes so big they’re considered our state bird. : [
Looking forward to your porch party!
    Your Friend,
    Deborah

  24. Rhoda- That looks great- It is absolutely beautiful. I LOVE the chocolate brown color…LOVE it! You did a wonderful job pulling everything together and that green is great with the cocoa color. xo Diana

  25. Rubym you have a beautiful porch! Looks like a wonderful retreat!

  26. Paula J says:

This post just made me say, “aahhhhhhhhh” !! That’s what summer is all about!

I can’t wait to see your porch, too: you have so many wonderful ideas.

Awesome** you are so deserving to be invited to the SL/Ballards event… I bet that was FUN! And I can’t wait to see the Idea House photos~~~ we went to one many years ago in Brentwood, TN & I had a blast!!

  27. Beautiful Makeover!

  28. What a fabulous space, I love the colors .

  29. What a stunning porch & I just love all the colors & fabrics! I remember your cute porch with the black & white diamond-painted floor at your earlier GA home…that was back in the GI days!! :) Your friend is a lucky gal to have you to help with her decorating! Blessings!

  30. Ruby’s porch turned out great! Being so large sure allows for a lot of flexibility! A couch for naps; doesn’t get any better than that! They could do a sleeping porch out there! :) See you on the 13th for your porch party! ~Zuni

  31. Love the porch! My favorite part is the floor. It makes the whole room come together! Great job!

  32. The floor of the porch is the best part to me! Here in Northern California we pretend that there aren’t any bugs, so not only do we not have a screened porch, but we don’t even have any screens on our windows! This works pretty well 95% of the time, but last night, it was one of those nights where the sun doesn’t set til after 8pm so we ate outside and just sat and sat and drank some wine with friends, all the while leaving the doors open to the house. Now I have 2 flies buzzing around, which drives me nuts. Oh well, at least I got the relaxing part right:)

  33. Oh what a beautiful porch! I’d love to sit out there with a sweet iced tea and read Southern Living. :)

That actually sounds so good right now. We are in a sea of boxes as we unpack in our new house.
