I’ve got another great homemade recipe to share with you from my mama’s kitchen. Homemade apple pie. She makes a good one. Really, really good one! We have loved her apple pies for as long as I can remember.
It’s a simple and easy recipe and I hope you’ll enjoy it too. From mom’s kitchen to yours!
Isn’t it a beauty? She brushes the crust with egg white to brown it up like this. It’s an old trick that you probably already know, but it sure makes a pretty pie.
It looked so good I had to share it with all of YOU.
This was my slice, complete with ice cream. Another little trick she does is to add a few dried cranberries in there with the apples. Great flavor!
You can see them peeking through here. This was after we cut the pie for lunch and boy, was it delish! Perfect dessert for Fall.
Iris’s Homemade Apple Pie (see Recipe below to print)
See how easy that is? And let me tell you, it is out of this world good. You know how store bought apple pies are a lot of crust and not much apple sometimes? This one is filled smack up with apples and is really tasty. WE love it!
Iris's Homemade Apple Pie
Ingredients
- Sliced apples
- Flat pie crusts 2
- Cinnamon
- Sugar
- Flour
- Dried cranberries optional
Instructions
-
Roll out a pie crust. (She uses the kind that is already flat. You can then put it in your pretty pie plate. She doesn’t make her own crust anymore, since these are so readily available and good.
-
Slice up apples (peeled or unpeeled, she does it both ways, just depends on what you like). She used Golden Delicious for this recipe, but any apples will do. About 5 or 6 apples, she makes sure they are piled up pretty high since they will cook down a bit.
-
Put sliced apples in a bowl and mix with flour and sugar (approx. 1 TBL flour and enough sugar to sweeten) and also depends on the kind of apple you use (tart or not), as to how much sugar to add. Around 1 or 2 TBL. sugar. Add dried cranberries if you wish. Add cinnamon. Stir all together.
-
Pour in pie plate over crust. Cover with another crust and crimp edges. Brush with egg white.
-
Bake at 350° for 45 min. to an hour, until crust is nice and brown.

I was so fortunate to have a piece of that apple pie. Let me tell you, it was delicious! Thanks so much to Rhoda’s Mother and Daddy for allowing me to come over for lunch on Sunday. Rhoda’s Mother and Daddy are the sweetest people. I am blessed to know them. The entire family has the gift of hospitality. They make you feel welcome when you come into their home.
I am going to bake that apple pie this weekend!

That looks so good!!! I need to find some gluten free pie crusts and give it a try. I’ve never had success making my own pie crusts. You are a family full of talents!

This is a lovely recipe — simplicity is key to a great apple pie — something our mothers understood. Too bad today’s cooks and chefs are so busy trying to outdo each other, they’ve forgotten the basic rule of “less is more.” Thanks for posting your mom’s recipe, Rhoda. I’ll follow it to a T and make one this weekend. Smiles!

Hey, Shirley! Thanks, it’s a WordPress plugin called Easy Recipe. I just started using it & so far, so good. Want to make it easy for folks to print.

Perfect timing. Apples are at their best now because they are freshest. And, I like the seasonal touch and the color that cranberries add. Love those dried cranberries. Thanks for sharing more of your Mom’s cooking wisdom, Rhoda.

Your mom’s pie looks beautiful! The cranberries are a great touch for the holidays. I often add lemon zest to my apple filling. Iris is one of my all time favorite names! Glad the other reader asked about the recipe format, I’ll remember to look for the WP plugin when I finish my blog. I look forward to more of your mom’s recipes.

Homemade apple pie can’t be beat this time of year. I did a blog post about apple pie several weeks ago.

I used to have an apple pie recipe long ago that had a crumbled crust on top. I only made it a couple times because it was labor intensive, this one looks and sounds sooooo easy, I will defiantly have to make it. Thanks for sharing.

Looks simply delicious Rhoda, will have to try adding cranberries next time I make apple pie. I agree, icecream on the side is the perfect accompaniment .

It is cold and snowy in Virginia tonight and I can almost smell this pie. I wish I had some apples here at the house!
Thank you for sharing!

The pie plate caught my eye…the edge looked familiar and then I saw the recipe on the plate. I have one that has the Pumpkin Pie recipe and one with a Pecan Pie recipe in the pie plate. They were a wedding gift to us in 1979! So what a surprise to see the Apple plate 🙂
By the way, I just discovered all the wonderful decorator blogs about the time you started your home renovation. I have loved following along.

Hi, Cheryl, I’m going to do a whole post about my paint colors soon, since that gets asked a lot. But, I’ll be glad to share in the meantime, it’s Fennel and you can get it mixed at Sherwin Williams even though it’s not a SW color. It’s a Pratt & Lambert color (I think, I do have the paint chip). Check with SW and they have the formula. You could at least get a test quart.
