Have you ever just noticed something around your house that you’ve looked at a million times, get a bright idea and you have to stop right then and change it?
I was vacuuming recently and stopped in the foyer, took a look at this painted chest that I’ve had, oh for at least 10 years now. I got this little beauty in Atlanta from a local decorator who used to have home shows at her house. She would buy from the Mart and have some great decorative accessories shows right in her basement and we always looked forward to it. It was a good deal. I fell in love with it then and still love it. It’s not a really expensive piece, but the details and colors are beautiful to me. I’ve looked at these gold knobs all these years and it never hit me until I stopped, took at good look and said to myself….those knobs would sure look better painted black. As we compulsive decorators are known to do, I took the knobs off right that minute, took them outside with my black Satin spray paint that’s always on hand and gave them a quick shot of paint. Let them dry well.
And put them back on and lo and behold, they DO look so much better than the gold. The piece has some black on it and the black knobs really bring out that detail.
And the black of the foyer rug really brings it all together. Do you ever do that? It doesn’t happen like that to me all the time, but sometimes something just jumps out and I have to do it right then.

Small change, BIG effect! I get those urges, too, but I'm usually not as organized as you are and would have to hunt for the paint or whatever – and by the time I found it, I'd be over it. LOL! But lately, I've found myself rearranging little things, and getting rid of some items. I want to empty my home of all my silk greenery now. Just have to find someone who wants it so I can pass it on.

What a keen eye you have!! Your chest was beautiful to begin with, but that simple change to the knobs really made the black detail pop, and now it looks fabulous!!

Yes, the black knobs are excellent! Yes, I do that with my stuff all of the time. Sometimes I think I'm torturing myself but, afterwards, I am so happy so, not torture I guess…unless I have some problem.
What a difference those black knobs made. You hardly notice the rest of the black on the original, but these pull it all together. I'm so glad I have found your blog. I love your makeovers.

Rhoda, this is such a pretty piece and I do like the changed pulls. In my post today (Friday) you can see some lovely ones I found recently – they are such unusual muted shades of glass, I may have to go back for some!
That was an excellent idea! I was at Goodwill and something told me to buy a round marble cheese plate. I had no real need for it but gut instinct said to get it. A round metal vintage table that she didn't want. Inspiration-cheese plate same diameter as plain metal table top. Yes, the marble top looks great on the table!
