If you grew up in the 70s and 80s like I did (and I know many of you did), it was an important time in TV history.
Dallas reigned supreme on the airwaves as we were all locked into this edge-of-your-seat drama, based in Texas, all about the oil industry and the business surrounding it.
Power struggles, deception and ambition. The Ewing family ranch near Dallas pulled us all in week after week as we tuned in to see what in the world was going to happen next to J.R., Bobby, Sue Ellen, and Pam.
And of course, there was plenty of romance and trouble in paradise along the way.
Did you all get into that show as much as my friends and I did back then?
My friends and I discussed it all the time. This was way before reality TV took over the networks. Dallas was our very own night-time soap opera. Naughty enough to be exciting, but not too risqué that we felt bad about getting hooked on it. I don’t think my mama approved of Dallas, but I sure loved watching it.
And the biggest, most exciting cliff-hanger of all time was on the show during one of the season finales!
Who shot JR?
Those words rang around the country as we all couldn’t wait to find out the answer to that question. Now, I can hardly remember who did shoot JR. Wasn’t it his sister-in-law? What was her name?
The NEW Dallas premieres Wednesday, June 13th at 9/8c on TNT.
I think I’ll have to watch just to see how JR, Bobby and Sue Ellen have aged. I see that Bobby (Patrick Duffy) is a lot more gray this time around. Linda Gray looks pretty well preserved and JR (Larry Hagman), well, he has been around a long time in TV land, from I Dream of Jeannie all the way to the original Dallas.
The new Dallas stars Josh Henderson, Jesse Metcalfe, Jordana Brewster, Julie Gonzalo and Brenda Strong, and they will be joined by those famous original stars, Patrick Duffy, Linda Gray, and Larry Hagman.
The show continues this time around with continuing rivalry between JR and Bobby Ewing, but with the younger generation at the forefront.
And there’s an online game you can play along with, it’s called ‘Rise to Power’, it’s a social game. Check it out here to get more information about the game. If you play ‘Rise to Power’, you declare your allegiance to a character (before 9pm EST, June 13th) and you could win over a thousand prizes as this new set of characters deceive and climb their way to the top.I’m giving my allegiance to Sue Ellen!
You can find out all about the New Dallas at the official site. Check out the ‘Rise to Power’ social game to play along and take a look at the links below for more information:

So, I have to ask you this! Who’s going to be watching the NEW Dallas? I will definitely have to check it out. The old one sure was fun to watch!

LOVE DALLAS!! J.R. is the only one I know of (fiction or in real life) who can stir it until it smells like a feedlot and still come out smelling like a rose! I grew up watching current episodes of the last few seasons and reruns of the first seasons. I do not have cable right now, though, so I will have to wait until it comes out on Netflix to catch up on J.R.’s scheming!!!

I’ll be watching. I’ve already got it set to record on my DVR. Can’t wait to see what has happened to that family. I’m sure not much good!

Yes, this show brings back memories! I actually went to Dallas quite a few years after the show had ended and did a “Dallas Tour” of the ranch. It was really interesting, the thing that struck me most is how small the rooms were, thru the magic of mirrors and TV we were shown how the rooms and swimming pool gave the illusion of looking huge..! Your are correct, Roda, it was Ellen’s sister Kristin who shot JR. Too bad Bobby’s long suffering wife Pam (Victoria Principal) isn’t coming back. She was my favourite!

Being curious I most likely will tune in but I’m afraid it will end up being disappointing. Hawaii 5-0 certainly turned out very disappointing but at least in Dallas they will have some of the orginial actors in it. I think JR was the first of the characters that you loved to hate.
I remember the one year they had Donna Reed who replaced Barbara Bel Geddes. I thought Miss Reed was a better choice. Sadly she passed away soon after that.

We don’t have cable so I won’t get to watch it but I have definitely heard plenty about Dallas and the other night time soaps of the ’80’s. Born in ’84 my dad named me after Krystle Carrington from Dynasty. Now when I tell people how to spell my name I just let them know the spelling is from the ’80’s. I wonder if any ’80’s names will make a come back from Dallas hitting the airwaves again?

I was just telling my husband this weekend it was coming back! We used to spend every Friday night watching Dallas and eating pizza with our good friends. Just this morning I emailed my friend and told her we’d have to start that tradition back up! I have the DVR set since mid-week may be tough to get together.

I’ll be watching! The reality shows about teen moms and things like that are just too “real” for me to enjoy, but I love a good soap opera disguised as prime time tv:)

I always wanted to live in that massive house with all my family and servants. Not so sure about that now.

I always wanted to live in that massive house with all my family and of course servants. Not so sure about that now.

Oh yes! We were fans of the show the first time around. I loved the house and Bobby. That darn JR used to annoy me no end!

I might watch, although it will be weird to see everyone older. I loved Larry Hagman in I Dream of Jeannie. I had a big crush on him. It’s funny how they become their characters, he is a totally different person as J.R.

My inlaws were big Dallas fans. In fact, my bro in law lived in Dallas at the time and my inlaws went out to see South Fork. I did not get caught up in Dallas as I was too busy watching 30something, my fav show from the 80s.

I live in the Dallas area so I am excited to see how it will work this time around. I used to run into some of the Dallas stars and crew filming across the street in one of our local department stores (Sanger Harris) from my office building back in the day…..what year was that again? Victoria Principal was so pretty and tiny! Hope it turns out better than that other GCB show! lol! They always paint us so “out there!” And I guess my big beef lately is with design shows originating in Texas. Donna Decorates Dallas and Junk Gypies are okay and another side of decorating. But I wish we could have a show originating in our area that’s more along the lines of the Nashville interior decorating show on HGTV. Not all of us Texans want to decorate with tons of bling and animal print in every room. Thank goodness for you, Rhoda! You can help us all!

It was huge in England also. I remember the summer when it seemed that everyone was asking who shot Jr. I found it anticlimactic when we did find out who shot him, and that oh yes, he was shot point blank in the head but recovered and was just fine. My first taste of how silly soaps can be. Never thought of Dallas in the same way after that and didn’t watch it anymore. I had a quite a crush on Bobby I remember, I thought he was so handsome. Wasn’t he in some other show before Dallas, a kind of male mermaid, he could stay underwater for a long time. I thought Victoria Principal was so beautiful, and she still is, has hardly changed at all, I wonder if she will make cameo appearances. I hope so as the new Dallas won’t seem right without her. What ever happened to Charlene the tiny but vuluptuos blonde spitfire?
Jane @ Cottage at the Crossroads says
I wouldn’t miss it for the world!

Wouldn’t miss it!! I already have the recorder set. lol.

Well, with Desperate Housewives going off the air, this should be a suitable replacement! I gave up DH for Lent, years ago! The writers are a bit too creative for me! I’ll certainly check out Dallas, but give me shows like The Good Wife and Downten Abby and I’ll be happy!
