A Realistic Fake

How’s that for an oxymoron title?

You’ve heard me say a bunch of times that I’m getting rid of my fake plants for the most part.  And I am….most of them.  Except for bringing this one home.  I had never seen anything quite like it and this is a really good fake.  It really does look like a potato, doesn’t it?

IMG_6186

And by that, I mean I think it will fool the eye pretty darn well.  I found this “fern growing out of a rock” at a local shop nearby and it was on clearance for about $5.

IMG_6187

I really thought it looked so pretty with the airy fern growing out of the rock and it was made to sit on a flat surface and look like a rock.  See, it even has some neat-o moss on the fake rock. 🙂

So, of course I couldn’t leave well enough alone, I had to make it even better.  What could be better than putting it in a pretty ironstone planter?  I filled the bottom of the planter with peanuts that come in packing material so I would have something to sit it on.  I added a piece of tissue paper underneath the fake rock to hold my white rocks.  Sat in the fake rock and then began to add white rocks all around it to anchor it in place.

And I love how this turned out.  I put it here for the photograph, but it’s been  moved to a permanent location, which you will see next week.  Even if it is fake.  This kind of fake, I can handle. 🙂  I really am getting rid of my big fake trees and most of the floral arrangements I’ve had for years have made way for more of a natural look, like sticks, feathers, and things like this pretty fern.  It’s not that I dislike all of them, but I like to keep it in check.  And this is what I’m drawn to at the moment. You know that decor is all about change.  I’m not saying everyone should get rid of their fakes, that is totally a personal thing.  In fact, I love some of the cottage homes with all their florals.

Even though we’ll be going to the beach  next week, I have some fun things lined up for you.  Several of my old and new blog friends are going to come by and share with all of you some of their projects and inspiration, so you won’t even miss me! 🙂

And I have a fantabulous giveaway coming up next Tuesday that you’ll LOVE too, along with a fun, fun makeover of a space at my house that I have been working on for a few days and I know you’ll enjoy.  So, we’ve got some exciting things happening at Southern Hospitality this month.

I haven’t even thought about Fall decor all that much, but when I get back, let’s have a Fall  inspiration party to celebrate this wonderful time of the year.  Get your Fall decor ready to share!  I don’t go all out for Fall, I save up for Christmas, but I do have some white pumpkins that I’ll drag out again this year.

If you missed the Southern Living at Home giveaway post, there’s still time to leave a comment to win, click over HERE to find out all the details.

Rhoda, I think your fake is wonderful, before I started reading, I thought it was a potato with fern . I would like to get rid of some fake flowers also, but have to come up this something to replace them. I am envious of your trip to the beach, but I hope you have a great time and bring back some great pictures.

Several years ago I was given a plant, not quite sure what it is, from Hawaii that grows out of lava rock. I have to water it by soaking the lava rock in water. It has sat on the window sill in my kitchen, but no longer. I am now on the look-out for a planter of sorts and will try and replicate what you have done. Thank you so much for the inspiration!

That certainly is a good imitation! I’m trying to replace my faux flower arrangements as well but would welcome that one! I also wanted to let you know that I am following you from my new blog http://www.howdyfromcowtown.com (formerly deb of views fromdeb’s porch). I really enjoy your posts! Please stop by sometime!

Hey Rhoda! that is a gorgeous “faux” fern. I do love that look. You have potted it perfectly to give it a realistic look. Don’t be too hard on us faux floral people. It’s all about quality and keeping them clean. Most of us can’t afford to place fresh flowers on our tables each week, and florals and NICE greens really add so much!

I’m so glad to read the other comments–I thought it was a potato, too! After reading your posts about fake plants, I looked around and realized I have them everywhere. I’m not sure which look worse, though. The fake ones or the half dead real ones. I began to slowly weed out (no pun intended) the fakes and have noticed how much more open things look without “something” everywhere. I’m one of those people who like to fill up every nook and cranny. Thanks for the nudge!

This was really cool-have not seen one around here, but I’ll keep my eyes open–I killed way too many real ferns over the summer! Looking forward to your fall par-tay! I love fall–even though we still have 90 degree temps here!!!

Oh yes, that’s a keeper! Great price and a great little fake. It does look real and I like that it doesn’t take up a lot of space. It looks great in your planter, too!

It’s very nice, but a real fern would have only cost about double for that shape and size. I have found that ferns grow very well indoors because they like shade. You could still keep the peanuts below and real plant in pot inside the pot. Have fun at the beach!

That is a very good looking faux! And the way you’ve potted it up shows it off nicely. Since we installed our new dual glazed windows—coated with something that unfortunately keeps the good plant-growing rays outside—I can’t keep real plants even in the sunniest windows. Finding “realistic fakes” isn’t easy—or usually so inexpensive.

That’s a very cool fern arrangement! I actually don’t mind artificial plants myself, as long as they are kept dust-free. You can’t kill them and don’t have to worry about watering them, Heck, I have enough to do. 🙂

Enjoy your time at the beach!

Hi Rhoda! Great to be back here reading about your fake tater. That’s pretty neat. Yup.

As Remodel-ey as I am, I’m still a man. So I better not try to talk intelligently (was going to add more to the sentence..but). 🙂

Thanks for welcoming me back today!
