Coming into our house into the split foyer, there are stairs going UP…….pretty hardwood stairs that we had done when we moved in here 4 years ago. The whole upstairs main living area got new hardwoods to go with what was already here.
Going DOWN the stairs from the foyer to our lower level, we still have carpet on these. I really, really wanted to get these done too while the others were being installed, but at an additional $1,000, it wasn’t happening.  So, we left them alone.
Until now. I’ve talked to my hubby and he gave me the thumbs up on ripping up the carpet from these stairs and doing something pretty with them. I’ve already peeked and there is plywood on the stairs and I think the edges are all rounded, so I’m going for it. I’ll pull out the carpet tack strips, along with all the staples, sand it smooth, probably add lots of wood putty AND some trim molding, then I’m gonna paint the stairs black and the risers white. And, I just might even add a natural runner down the middle. Something that will be durable and look good too.
That’s my plan and this is going on my to-do list, sooner rather than later. Did you see what Sarah did with her stairs? Check it out, she ripped up all her carpet and stained them and they look fantastic. Mine soon will too. I’m not trying to match the upper stairs and these will be more casual, but I think they will look just fine.  Anything’s better than carpet, right? In a perfect world, I would be ripping up the carpet from the entire downstairs and staining the concrete. But, that’s a whole ‘nuther discussion.Â
UPDATE: Chair is SOLD; to my next door neighbor who secretly reads my blog 🙂
On another note, I’ve got a chair and ottoman for sale if one of you local Alabama girls might be interested. This has been in our bedroom and it’s slipcovered (which my mom made for me) in a pretty gold sort of damask solid cotton fabric.
I’m asking $75 for the chair and ottoman. It has bun feet on it and the fabric underneath is a cream and seafoam green. Can you tell when I bought this chair? It is still in great condition and is perfect in a smaller space, but if you wanted to use the green striped fabric, the chair would need a good cleaning.
But, I have to get rid of it cause I’m moving the white slipcovered chair and ottoman in its place, since I brought home a chair from Grandma’s house that I’ll show you soon. I’m playing musical chairs again.
Email me if you’re interested! I’ve got a few more home decor things that I’ll put up for sale later on. Doing some changing out around here. 🙂
Come back on Sunday evening for the start of this week’s Thrifty Treasures party! Thanks for joining in and making it fun.

I have serious stair envy. With three cats, three teens, and old brown carpet, it’s never nice. We have no nice wood or rounded edges underneath. Alas!
A project for some day… 🙂

Rhoda,
I came by to see your post and WOOO, WOOO! Pinch me I’m doing the Happy Dance! I love those stamps and can’t believe how lucky I got to be the winner.
I will send you my address information on your contact above.
I’m looking forward to seeing how your stairs turn out. I’ve been thinking of painting my stair bannister ebony, but I’m still pondering it. I know you stained yours darker and it looks great.
Thanks again,
Hugs, Cathy

Congratulations to the stamper winner. I love those stamps! And I am looking forward to seeing how your stairs project goes. The black and white combo sounds so great. I can’t wait to see it! Have a great weekend!

Hey, Rhoda!
Three quick things…one, I would be interested in the chair/ottoman. I need to know if it fits in the space I am thinking of, but if it does…I would love to mosey (isn’t that what we do in Alabama) up from Montgomery to get it. If it is still available can I get the measurements?
Second, I love your stair idea. I did follow Sarah’s adventure in stair re-do and can’t wait to see what your stairs look like.
Third, I FINALLY HAVE A NEW HEADER on my blog and would love to have you visit again. 🙂 http://www.containchaos.com

I can’t wait to see what you do with your stairs! We just stained ours black and I love them! I posted before and after pics a few days ago.
BTW – your entry stairs are beautiful!

I couldn’t get your email to work so sent you my contact information via Facebook. I’m heading over to our friend Sally Ann this morning and hopefully will find a Thrifty Treasure. Thank You again!

When we had our home, I redid our stairs. Going from a carpeted mess to wood treads and white risers really cleaned up the look. Loved it! Helped our home sell faster, too!

Hi Rhoda
I need to pay attention to this and check out Sarah’s stairs. When we built, almost 7 years ago (can you believe that??) the stairs were finished in hardwoods, then a runner was installed up stairs and down stairs to the lower level. In our efforts to do some moving and changing, we’ve come to the conclusion we need some paint on those stairs and some sort of trim. No paint on the hardwood but on the facing boards. Paint all the trim white, I think is what I’m trying to say and leave the portion you step on stained. I’ve wanted to do this for awhile, but hesitated to mention it to J. When I finally did he was agreeable…..so away we go, as soon as we can contact our friend who does all our painting and get a bid, we’ll make a definite plan.
More changes at Pat & J’s Casa! I’ll try to remember before photos and blog the event. It will be over a month or two before we can get started, since our TN trip is coming up soon. Can’t wait for that little road trip!!
Looking forward to seeing your stairs.

Those stairs are going to look so great in black and white. Can’t wait to see the after pics! I’m toying with the idea of black/white stairs in my new house too…not sure it would work…but yours–YES!
Debra says
Hey Rhoda,
We need our stairs done….they are in the entry way so I think they need to be done professionally. Who did yours when you moved in four years ago? did you do it?
Sally says
Can’t wait to see the completed stair, Rhoda. It sounds like a great plan. I saw some stairs in a picture the other day that had done small mosaic tiles on the risers with painted treads. It was a great look. It made me think about all kinds of options….too bad I live in a one story house!
Judy says
I’ve always been a big fan of that black/white stair combo….so classic! Also, a seagrass rug with black border (?) would be so pretty to use. My hat’s off to you for attempting this major project but I know you’re the girl that can get it done.
Hugs!

Quite the project there with the stairs, Rhoda! I’m sure it will look great. I’d really like to just paint the risers on ours white rather than get involved with doing the spindles and all. I think I could convince my hubby on that. Thanks for the discount code, I’m heading over there now to order my address stamp. Congrats to Cathy!

Wish I lived in Alabama…that chair looks super comfy and the slipcover is just my style! Looking forward to seeing how the stairs turn out.

Hi Rhoda!
I know whatever you decide to do with your stairs they will look exquisite. Our home still has the original wood floors from 1880!

Congratulations to Rhoda on her win. I just love painted stairs, especially black and white. Can’t wait to see the completed project.

I would guess you bought that chair in the early 90’s. Maybe ’91 or ’92 ? I am guessing that because I have the SAME one in the peach and cream color combo. I still have that exact ottoman under cover in my living room ! Laughed when I saw it! Wasn’t that just the comfiest couch ever ?
Pinky says
Your stair idea sounds GREAT and I can’t wait to see how they turn out. I would love to do the same thing to my stairs going to our lower level so (no pressure) waiting to see how yours turn out:):) I hate the carpet on those stairs, it is impossibl;e to keep clean. Painting and a runner sounds PERFECT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! XO, Pinky

Can’t wait to see the stairs! Would love to do something with mine 🙂
