I love how beautiful window treatments add the finishing details to a home and it really does make a huge difference to get them up and on your windows. Drapery panels add coziness and texture to a space like nothing else can do.
You all know how passionate I am about window treatments and how adding fabric panels to a room can totally change that room for the better. Â It’s so true! Â Adding panels and beautiful fabrics can enhance a room so much, giving it a cozier feel than before.
Take a look at these example rooms and see how the drapery panels are the backdrop to a beautiful space and how different the room would feel without them.
Panels soften and frame a window, bringing a sense of style and comfort to a room. Â With hard straight lines on windows, adding fabric creates a casual softness that otherwise wouldn’t be there with a bare window.
These drapes blend right in with the walls, but again the softness and texture is there.
Neutral panels are a wonderful backdrop to use in a room if you just want the furniture and fabrics to shine. Â Neutrals are a pleasing look and add that elegant touch to the windows in this room.

Neutral panels and textured Roman bamboo blinds add a nice casual and comfortable feel to this room, allowing the print fabric on the chairs to shine.
Last year, I introduced you to Barn and Willow, an online shopping site that gives those looking to add drapes to their home an affordable drapery panel choice.
I spoke to Trisha, the owner of Barn and Willow about the main 3 things that get in the way of customers ordering drapes online and this is what she shared with me. Â

Problem #1: Â Unrealistic Prices
I think we’ve all probably experienced the problem if unrealistic drapery prices. Â As I mentioned last year, I once worked for Ethan Allen and had to quote a customer $6,000 for one room of drapes and while that is probably the norm in high-end designer homes, it is not the norm for folks like me and for many of you who read my blog. Â I about choked on that number and needless to say, I was not a good salesgirl for that store. Â I enjoy sharing shops that are reasonable and affordable and I think Barn and Willow is one of those shops.
As a customer our options are to go to Bed Bath & Beyond, IKEA and places like that, for ready made off the shelf draperies or put thousands of dollars towards custom ones from higher end brands. There’s not much in between. 90% of windows are structured differently and you can’t just go in the store and pick panels off the shelf all of the time and have them look great. Everyone has different shapes of windows and the windows might be too wide, or tall, or a bay window and what do you do with that? Â Off the shelf isn’t going to fit much of the time and getting custom breaks the bank.
Barn and Willow solution:
Belgian Linen drapery is custom stitched starting at $99. Â They cut out the middleman (wholesalers and distributors) and instead work directly with some of the best fabric manufacturers premium drapery panels at 1/3 the price of their competitors. Â With no unnecessary markups, they can offer premium quality at accessible price points. Â Yes, that means for us normal folks who do not want to take out a second mortgage just to add window treatments to our home.
Here’s one of the Belgian Linen Draperies in their Mist Gray color, that starts at $99 and is available in other colors as well.
Problem #2: Â Measurement
We all know measurement is one of the most difficult parts of getting draperies. How high should the rod be? How much fullness should the panels be? How do I measure the length, the width etc?
Barn and Willow solution:
An Auto Sizing Calculator: If you are not sure about your drapery panel length and width, use their Auto Sizing Calculator where they ask you a few simple image based questions and show you certain reference points to measure. Based on your input they Auto-Calculate the panel width and length dimensions for you. You can access it as you “Start Customizing” any drapery from here.

Problem #3: Â How Do I Select the right thing?Â
They realized that people have a hard time understanding what color and texture would fit their decor. A ton of retailers and brands send out small fabric swatches (so do they), but it’s super hard to visualize the small fabric swatch into a full blown drapery and make a selection quickly.
Plus a small swatch doesn’t help with the Lining selection at all (since you can’t figure out which fabric and lining will have which kind of light block effect).
Barn and Willow Solution:
Try Before You Buy: Get sample drapery panels (25″W x 50″L – privacy lined) for $10 per panel. Pick as many as you like. Keep it with you for 7 days and hang it to see how it looks. They provide the return shipping label, so once you have made a selection, simply return the panels using the return shipping label and when you place your final order, they refund you the sample panel order amount. People LOVE this, since they can make a decision quickly, fully understand the fabric/texture/color and the privacy lining option. Â Check out the Sample Panel page for details.
I received fabric samples and they are truly luxury linen fabrics. Â So soft to the touch! Â If I ever add neutral panels to my home in the future, Barn and Willow will be on my list.Â
If you’re interested in getting started with pricing out panels for your windows, you’d start with the Fabric page and then go on to “Start Customize” to select Pleat Style, Lining, Dimensions (this is where the “Auto Sizing” Calculator can be used) and then Review before Adding to Cart and placing an order.
Here’s a Video that shows the flow process at Barn and Willow.

You definitely need to add neutral panels to your house to tone it down. Go for a solid neutral.
Diane, I love my panels in my house, so I’m not going to replace them anytime soon.
Rhoda, I lust over all the fabrics you have chosen for your windows. Don’t you dare change them!!! Your rooms are spectacular.
Thank you, Roxanne! I won’t be changing them. 🙂
I love your panels too. I have similar ones in my house and I love them. But then again I’m not a solid neutral boring kind of girl.
Rhoda, your reply to Diane shows your momma raised you right! Bless (Diane’s) her heart and you go girl!
Thanks for all the info – and the discount code! I get nervous ordering window panels because of the reasons you mentioned. Then I just end up doing nothing. Years ago, I got talked into custom valances for my kitchen window and slider. The price was ridiculous and my husband kept asking when the rest of the curtains were coming because he assumed I bought more than that with the price I paid. To this day, I downplay how much I actually spent so he doesn’t get angry all over again. Anyway, I will check these out! Enjoy your day!

Roxanne,
I wanted to write you and thank you for your blog! My wife, Aileen and I run a small window covering shop in Santa Rosa, CA and we are just getting established in our area. We have a fair number of diy folks that are beginning to frequent our store and who say they love our services. We see our success tied to the ability to add the kind of value you regularly give on your blog! We have referred a few of them to your blog and will continue to as it is relevant. We have gained all kinds of great ideas here on other home decorating topics that have really helped us add value to our customers as they navigate their own process. Aileen so appreciated the 2 part article on House Beautiful Kitchen of the Year 2016. She loved the Matthew Quinn reference as we have been remodeling our home in the California Wine Country. Again, just want to thank you for being such a great coach and say keep up the great work!
HI, Thank you Daniel, my name is Rhoda! Thanks for stopping by and happy you found some inspiration.
Oh Rhoda,
Please forgive my absent mindedness. I had just finished reading Roxanne’s comment and typed her name in. I feel horrible. Please forgive my senior moment?
HI, Daniel, no problem at all!
