Burlap Canvas Monogram Art

Since I’m hosting this Michaels and Hometalk Pinterest party on Sunday here in Atlanta, I thought I’d share the project I’ll be doing.  If you are coming to the party, you don’t have to do this project, you can do anything you want.

Party-Promo-graphic.jpg

There are Pinterest inspired projects at all the Michaels now or come up with something YOU want to do.  I decided to get a burlap canvas (12×12”) and do a wooden letter monogram on it with scrapbook paper and decoupage.

michaels supplies

Here are the supplies I got for this project:  Scrapbook paper, Mod Podge in Satin, Large wooden letter, Burlap stretched canvas in 12×12”.

letter

This is a really simple project and nothing fancy, but it’s cute for a kid’s room or a craft room or somewhere you might want a monogram.  First, lay the letter face down on the back of the paper, because you want the right side of the paper to decoupage on top of the letter.

trace letters

Trace around the letter with a pencil.

traced on paper

Cut out the letter.

scrapbook paper

Now you’re ready to decoupage on top of the wooden letter.

decoupage letter

Cover the letter with Mod Podge. Use a foam brush or whatever you have around.

letter (2)

Place the scrapbook paper on top, smoothing it all down.  Then go back and add more Mod Podge to the top of the paper smoothing it as you go.

Cover it all the way and it will dry clear.

jute webbing

I had this jute webbing in my stash and you could use any piece of burlap or ribbon for the hanger.

stapling jute

I cut the jute in half and then stapled it with my office stapler on the back for a hanger.

glue gun

Then, I hot glued the letter to the front.  Do a better job that I did with eye-balling it and make sure it’s in the middle.

And that’s all you have to do to make yourself a monogram decoupage letter on burlap canvas.

This one is way simple and I’ve seen lots of variations on this, but I decided to keep it plain.  You can choose so many different scrapbook papers, so do what makes you happy.

I hung this from my shelf in the laundry room, but you could put one in a lot of places.

I left the edge white and it makes the paper pop to  have a contrast.

So, if you’d like to join me on Sunday, along with Hometalk, I’d love to see you at my local Michael’s.  I’ll be at the Cobb Place Michael’s from 1-3 PM, doing this same craft, but as I mentioned you can choose from many Pinterest inspired crafts to get your crafty self on.

I have done similar letters but I like to paint the edges of the letter for a more finished look. I have a great hot pink print “T” for our front door that hangs from ribbon. Love letters!!

Well, is your town still shut down from the latest bit of snow? It is amusing to me to see southerners post their pictures and excitement about snow. In Ohio we’ve living in forts of huge snow piles for weeks and have endured sub zero temperatures for even longer. I think all Southerners should be required to drive to colder climites and learn to drive on ice and snow before they are allowed a driver’s license. Maybe then everyone would be safer when bad weather strikes the south.

No, Ms. Ohio, this is the 2nd round of snow and ice. This one wasn’t nearly as bad as the last one 2 weeks ago. That’s a little bit of an attitude you’ve got there and could definitely stir up some additional comments. Be nice.

You go Rhoda… I think I actually saw something on the CBS news this past week about wrecks and things happening in the North due to snow and ice…there seems to be an issue driving in it not only in the South. Thanks for sharing these wonderful pics of Tybee Island.

I really like the paper you chose, the color is so you! I’ve done this with those inexpensive wood picture frames, too, and they always turn out nice. One thing I always do is take a fine grit sandpaper and sand the edges just a little, so the paper blends smoothly to the frame/letter, then add a final coat of Mod Podge.

Great idea! I’m going to do this for my bachelor son that just moved into his first home (in an appropriate manly paper of course). And, Ms. Ohio, your suggestion for us to all drive in the dead of your winter before we got our driver’s license, has struck me as terribly funny. I pictured all of our 16 year olds coming to your state in the middle of winter and driving on your roads. Now that would be unsafe!

I’ve been wanting to make a little something with burlap! Of course, I should have known you would come up with a simple solution! Love it!

Rhoda, I love your burlap project and it’s perfect for first time crafters who may be joining you for the party! I wish we had a Michael’s near us but the closest one is about 30 minutes away. Hope your Valentine’s Day if filled with joy and love! 🙂

Cute project and so easy. I like someone’s idea of edging the letter to finish it off. We all work together to inspire one another! I love the pics of Tybee and am going to do a girl trip there.
