I’ve shared the beautiful town of Apalachicola with you before, but we did some drive bys of these charming homes and cottages along the coastline of this sort of out of the way hidden gem city. I first went there in 2011 for a quick drive through as well as my very first visit to St. George Island, when I went with friends of mine and we were out for a drive along the coast from Port St. Joe. Who knew that just 5 years later, I would meet Mark and St. George Island would become a big part of my life too. His family has been going for over 25 years and we hope to keep the tradition going. We are working on getting all of Mark’s girls to commit to going next year (maybe in September during Fall break) and renting a big house along with other extended family in another house. We will see how that goes! In the meantime, back to Apalachicola. This town is the one you go through to get to the bridge to St. George if you’re driving from west of here. We drive down through South Georgia and Alabama to get here, through the piney woods of the Apalachicola National Forest, but we always visit Apalachicola for some meals. It’s such a cute town and I had no idea until I went there the first time how many charming historic homes are in this town.
I was looking specifically for this house, from the cover of the April Southern Living magazine. Unfortunately, we couldn’t spot it, so it must be hidden down some side road. You can tell it’s on the water, but we never spotted it. I really enjoyed the article about this house and would love to see it in person. But there are plenty of beauties to see!

There are several pretty churches in town too.
And the Gibson Inn is right in the heart of town. I heard it’s a great place to stay too. We always go to the Owl Cafe and eat at least once, this time for our anniversary.

Back by the coast line and over the bridge to St. George Island. We always hope we get another chance to visit the beach there! Have you been to Apalachicola? It’s very quaint and definitely Old Florida. You’ll be away from the madness that is now Destin and 30A. I still love those areas, but 30A has gotten so crazy busy and I blame it on influencers and the internet in general. Mark pretty much refuses to go back there again. Last time we went, we had issues with the small tent/cabana we were using on the beach and the lifeguards on that stretch told us tents weren’t allowed, only umbrellas, so we had to modify our cabana to fit their rules. I’ve read horror stories about beach use there, so it’s gotten crazy. You won’t find those rules at St. George. Destin and 30A used to be a Southern destination, but now the whole country has caught on to the beauty of the Florida gulf coast.
Such a beautiful area. I’ve never explored that part of Florida but your pictures make me want to go there.
