Easy DIY Projects on a Dime: Brightly Painted Furniture

{Giveaway is Closed}

Winner is #23:  Shary.  Congrats!

You know how much I love to update old furniture with paint. It’s one of the easiest and most cost-effective ways to update and transform furniture into something desirable.  I’ve been painting furniture for years and now there are so many new products out there to help this process along.  From spray paint to chalk paint, there is a paint for all occasions.

The trend in the last couple of years has continued to evolve by painting those old castoffs with brightly color hues.  It’s a great way to add that pop of color in the room to really wake up your space.  I myself totally love this trend!

My sister found that table and chairs set on Craigslist for $100 and it is the perfect addition to her craft room.  But, it’s kinda ugly, don’t you think?  and pssst, there’s a $50 Home Depot giftcard giveaway at the end, so read it all, OK?!

Not a fan of blonde orangey wood, are you?

So, we are going to transform those pieces and make them SO much better.  With this luscious new Barcelona Orange shade by Annie Sloan chalk paint, this table and chairs will have a whole new lease on life.

Ready to start painting.

We painted 2 coats of Annie Sloan chalk paint on these pieces and the finish is really nice after the 2 coats are applied.  I am really loving the ASCP so much and want to use it more and more on many other pieces.  This was my first time using it on furniture and it does have a very dry chalk like feel when dry.

Amazingly smooth finish too, but it needs wax.  I am going to finish this set up with Annie Sloan Dark Wax on top and that should complete this Craigslist find into a functional and pretty craft table.  I’ll be back later to show how we waxed it!

By the way, you can order Annie Sloan chalk paint from my sponsor, Stylish Patina, and her button is on my sidebar.  As soon as I get that Dark Wax, we’ll finish this project and I’ll do a how-to on the whole thing.   I did add some clear wax on the table, which is what you see here, but the Dark wax will complete the look.

So, are you liking this new trend of brightly painted furniture?  I think it is such a fun way to add some pretty pizazz to otherwise bland and dated furniture, don’t you?

Here are some more great examples around blogland of brightly painted hues of furniture pieces.  See what you think about these!

This turquoise beauty is from Natty by Design and she has it going on with painting older pieces of furniture that need a new life.

From Country Living, see how that pop of orange on the coffee table adds so much spunk to the room.  You can see bits of the same color on the pillows sprinkled around the room too.

My blog friend, Emily, painted this campaign dresser for her office in a springy green and it is a great mix for her space.  I can’t wait to see what she does in her new office.

From Design Sponge, this dresser started off as a standard issue brown wood French inspired piece.  There’s certainly nothing wrong with brown wood, I have plenty of it myself, but if you have a piece that has seen better days, what better way to shake it up than to paint it a sunny yellow.

I have always adored the way Myra transformed this vintage desk into something so pretty and lively for her home.  Love it!

From Opal Never Shouts, this blue painted chest is such a vibrant color and perfectly at home with the other colors surrounding it in the room.

This jewelry chest came in a cherry finish and was transformed by Repurposed Life Designs  in a happy yellow and how much more fun would this be to wake up to?

From Good Life of Design, here’s another example of an older piece brought up to date with this meadow green paint.  I’m in love with green painted anything, so this is so pretty to me.

If I won the $50 gift card, I’d probably use it for paint.
I’d like to refurbish an old table & chairs set for my kitchen.
Just can’t decide on the color!!

  2. My, there is so much around here I want to update. I think I would start with my chest of drawers that I have in the dining room. It holds my table clothes and runners. It is white but needs to be green. Yeah, I’d to the chest of drawers first.

  3. I do like this trend of painted furniture…I’m trying to work up the courage to tackle an old desk…just need to find the perfect color!

  4. Ive been trying to get the nerve to paint my first piece- a sideboard! I’m dying to see it in a seafoam green!

  5. I’ve got a great maple buffet in my dining area. You know, the standard maple item, three drawers down the middle with a door on each side. My holiday plates and linens are inside. It would look great painted a nice yellow, I think, to pop some soft color into my sage green room. What do you think?

  6. Oh my gosh I’m in Home Depot at least once a week. If I won I would use the money to buy wood & paint so that I could build a new headboard for our master bedroom! 🙂

  7. Oh, I’m just crazy about the trend of painted furniture! I’m thinking that the rocking chair in one of our guest rooms would look beautiful with a new life full of color!

  8. I would buy paint for my daughter’s old bedroom furniture. I love all the beautiful colors shown in this posting.

  9. You are so right, Rhoda! That orange color really makes your sister’s craft room sing. I have that same shade in AS, but I haven’t decided what to paint yet. Can’t wait to see what the dark wax does to the table and chairs.Oh, I would buy some plants from Home Depot if I won!

  10. I would like to update my dining room. I need new seatcovers for my chairs and some paint.

  11. I am in the middle of transforming my college son’s old room and turning it into the guest room. Right now, it’s an army green color and my ambition is to turn in into a shabby chic retreat. I’ve already taken a yard sale brass chandelier and transformed it into something beautiful, but it looks crazy with the “camo” walls. I need paint and beadboard really bad!

  12. Peggy Daley says:

We bought our king headboard for 20.00 about 20 years ago. It is still an ugly cream Color! I would love it to be e fun bright item! I would liven up our bedroom! MAYBE!

  13. Home Depot is my home-away-from-home! I have 2 bookcases in serious need of a paint intervention.

  14. I’ve been working on converting an old RV into a space for myself. I’d use the $50 to paint my craft / sewing table something funky and bright and maybe pick up a small rug to keep my wood floors cozy in the winter.

  16. Spring is coming and I really want to liven up my entry with a focal color piece of furniture.

  17. I would repaint a campaign dresser I have been wanted to redo for months. I also have a cabinet that could use some sprucing up. I love me some home improvement stores…..

  18. Hello Rhoda,

LOVE Barcelona Orange!! I painted a wood chair in Barcelona and clear and dark waxed it…. luscious!! The dark wax will knock down the brightness of the orange to a fabulous butterscotch hue.
Remember to use the clear wax as a kind of dark wax eraser if you get too much dark on your pieces. Have fun

    janet xox

  19. If I won, I would use the money towards a new rug in the living room to give it a new personality.

  20. Sharon Thornburg says:

I have a closet full of old rocking chairs (children’s) I would love to paint and give as gifts to new parents. The $50 Home Depot card would really come in handy!

  21. I have a desk all stripped and primed….waiting for the perfect color of green paint to come into my life!

  23. I’d definitely buy paint, but it would probably be for kitchen cabinets. They definitely need updating!

  24. I have one last room to update in my house. I call it the “sewing room”, although besides the sewing machine, it also houses my computer and another small desk, bookshelves, etc., etc. Unfortunately, too much etc.!! I would probably use the gift card on paint.

  34. I have a dining room table in great need of a makeover. The finish is coming off leaving bare wood , not to mention all the dings and so forth. We are apparently tough on our table. PS. It is that orangey pine wood too so you’d hate it all the way around. 🙂

  35. My husband and I are about to move into a new-to-us house, a foreclosure we’ve been fixing up for months! We’ve picked everything that has gone into the house, so we’re pretty happy with it. However, we haven’t put much thought into our outdoor space. I would love to start planning for our back deck…and make it entertaining-ready! 🙂

  45. Hi Rhoda,

If I won the gift card, I would breathe new life into a bathroom that was decorated in ‘seventies’, (that is 1970, complete with ugly wallpaper, and ugly draping lights), and begin to bring it into the 21st century!!! ☺

  52. LOVE the furniture above, and although I have about three small pieces waiting for a transformation, I would “finally” redo my dining room table and chairs we got from a house cleanout. They are a light honey maple, and I’m doing my downstairs house in dark mahogany. So I would buy the stain for that and some much needed bins to store my “repurpose” finds. Thanks – Great Article

  64. My son’s bedroom:)

  65. I just got a new kitchen table and chairs after using the old one for 23 years (I know 23 years). I am going to put the old one in my craft room and a $50 would go towards the chalk paint I need to paint it. There are over 30 colors of chalk paint and I want to as many as possible on this table. I’ll grid it off and paint squares of different colors and my granddaughters can have a ball with gramma’s table.

  66. I’m a picker without boundaries and have found, repurposed, painted, sold and completely enjoyed many things over the years. 147. Carol in Bama says:

Love painted furniture and I have some myself too. I need to add a bright color to something in my sewing room. If I won the gift card, I would use it to update the hardware in my kitchen to change from the tired brassy look to something more modern.

  148. I need new lights for my kitchen! really badly!

  149. We’re having our first baby in the spring and are setting up the nursery. I’d buy a replacement for the hideous ceiling fan and light in the nursery.

  150. I have a small side table that I use in my guest room that I picked up at a garage sale a couple of years ago. It was originally brown wood, which I then spray painted white – I think it was my very first DIY paint job, actually! Now, after a couple years use and a move, it’s definitely ready for another paint job!

  151. I could do a lot with a gift card to Home Depot but I’d probably update an old coffee table I have in our family/front room.

  152. April was in CT now CA says:

I found this cute triple tray table on the side of the road quite a while ago that I’ve been wanting to re-do!

  153. I would love to update my entry hall table!:)

  154. I would so make over the endtables in my family room. Love how the chalk paint on the table came out.

  155. I’d like to repaint my kitchen!

  156. Laurie Russell says:

Boy I could sure use that Home Depot gift card. After reading your blog, I have ID’d at least 4 pieces of old furniture just waiting for me to paint and let them live another life.

    Thanks for the inspiration…

  157. I would update the paint in my master bedroom…avocado walls are not in style anymore!

  158. Karen Carter says:

Love the colors! Would do the dining furniture for sure with a $50 gift card.

  159. I love, love, love your blog! With a $50 Home Depot gift card I would buy the supplies needed to turn my ’90s entertainment center from dark green painted wood to an off-white piece with dark glaze and ORB hardware! Can’t wait for the how-to on your sister’s table and chairs!

  160. I would love to update the fixtures in our bathroom.

  161. Marsha Milliken says:

With your help I think we could do FIVE projects for FIFTY dollars around my house! We should start with a fun modern coffee table in the family room (I have the table), next a neat light fixture for the dining room, a frame, and…….

  162. I am in the process of putting my craft room together, finally my own room 🙂 !!! and am on the hunt at thrift stores and yard sales for my pieces. I have found one old desk that is needing a new paint job. I am also on the lookout for anything else that I can recycle and paint.

  163. Ana Rodriguez says:

LOVE the orange table! I love the color, I have two walls on my living room painted orange:)
I am your newest follower, love your blog:)
With the $50 HD gift card I would paint my master bedroom and make some shelves…

  164. Hi Rhonda…..Can you give me info on where to buy chalk paint? I either am overlooking it or my stores do not carry it. I sure am interested in trying it on a chest of drawers I want to paint. You inspire me!!! Thanks!

    • Hi, Pat, I’ve got a sponsor on my sidebar, Stylish Patina, the box with the bicycle in it. She can get you fixed up with any chalk paint needs. Be aware it is more expensive that regular paint, but it goes a long way.

  165. Hi Rhonda, I just found out about chalk paint. I really want to do a desk I found super cheap at Goodwill. So could you tell me if you sanded the table prior to painting it. I read that you did not have to with chalk paint. Also hope I can win the HD gift card! I have so many ideals and this would give me a jump start on them!!! ~Allison

    • HI, Allison, no you do not have to prime with chalk paint. Just paint it on and go. Sorry, the HD gift card giveaway is already closed. Have fun!

  167. Love diy projects & love home depot! I would totally build & paint this little funky table i have i mind!

  168. We just moved to a new apartment which is practically bare. We have been buying old furniture from craigslist that we are planning to modernize. Your article was very informative, and now I am getting all kinds of exciting ideas of what I can do with this furniture, in particular, a coffee table, and end table. Thank you!

  169. I am not sure how I would use the $50.00…so many things to do…but I would love the opportunity to figure it out! Thanks.

  170. I have an old honey oak colored china cabinet made by my great grandfather. I would love to paint it or possibly wall paper the back inside the shelves. I need to do something to update it and work it into my style. I also have a desk I bought at Habitat for Humanity for $40 bucks that is beyond scratched and really pitiful looking. It is very dark cherry color and I desperately want to paint it!

  171. I LOVE the updated pieces and would like to try and du the same with my very dated solid oak desk. I also have a vintage piece in the same room that will be getting a splash of color. Great to have a $ giveaway! I love Home Depot:-)

  172. We live at the beach and so the whole house is very eclectic. We just bought an oak sideboard that we are going to shorten and use for our TV and stereo equipment to update the look of the bedroom. Key Lime green is what I’m thinking. we have a few accents with that color and I think it will make the room really POP!

  173. I have never done any DIY projects but now am getting inspired. I think am going to paint my dinette whether I win the gift card or not! Thanks for the inspiration 🙂
