Eating Healthy During a Busy Summer

Most of us are on the go during the summer months. Vacations, weekend outings, pool and beach time, it’s just a time of being on the go. I love spending time outdoors during this time of the year and having a pool nearby is a wonderful thing to take advantage of. My friend, Debbie, has a wonderful pool and she lets me come over and use it during the summer.  I can’t tell you how enjoyable it is to sit out here and enjoy the sunshine and cool off. She’s a dear friend and I’m so looking forward to getting out there for another season by the pool. It’s great to have friends with pools, right?!

I eat a lot more salads during the summer months too. Heating up the kitchen and cooking is not on the top of my list, so I try to eat healthy with salads and lighter food fare, but still want to keep my girlish figure and opt for whole grains and healthy options. Eating fruits in the summer is a priority too. Summer fruits like peaches and watermelon are definitely on my grocery list during the summer months. The plethora of summer fruits out there is amazing and I take full advantage of eating them when they are in season and fresh. In fact, my parents have blueberry bushes that are usually loaded and we also have some mega huge blackberries growing in their backyard too that are loaded with berries this year. I can’t wait to dig in.

Nabisco cookies

I had the chance to try out some new products from Newtons – Fruit Thins Banana Drizzled with Dark Fudge and Fruit Thins Coconut Drizzled with Dark Fudge. We all grew up with Fig Newtons as a classic in the house, but these unique cookies are different in that they are made with whole grains, real fruit, and dark fudge with 8g of whole grains per 31g. Did you know dark chocolate is good for you?  Banana and coconut are inside these cookies and both, I love.

Chocolate stripes make anything taste good and these are striped out with chocolately goodness, so they taste extra good. If you get the chance to try them, I hope you will. They are great for on-the-go snacks and treats during these summer months.

Small towns like Fairhope are always slow to get new products in the stores, but I’ll be on the hunt in Piggly Wiggly looking for these yummy treasures!!!

LOL, Brenda at Cozy House just blogged about these cookies, too. These sound good, and I don’t know if you care or not, but they DO contain soybean oil, which is a harmful ingredient in processed foods. I read all food labels and avoid anything with this ingredient, as well as high fructose corn syrup.

I do care & tend to leave off processed foods for the most part. I don’t think an occasional splurge is bad though.

Those products look yummy, I am into eating really healthy since being diagnosed with an autoimmune problem “hashimotos”. I am completely gluten free now and trying to be sugar and dairy free too. I buy a plethora of nuts and dried fruits which I shake up in a big storage jar and have a couple of handfuls with a peice of chopped up fruit for breakfast. I seem to have so much more energy since I have been 3 weeks entirely gluten free.
