Iadore everything about this picture in the October issue of Better Homes and Gardens, and studied all the little details when I flipped open to this page.
Lots of great ideas here, from the glass pieces holding some treasured collectibles, to the leaning platter on the back of the shelf, as well as the darker urns which break up the tones. Those white pumpkins in the dark urn are especially adorable. I see some white creamware/ironstone (check out the fern frond glued on the platter) and lots of pretty Fall colors and natural elements interspersed with all the neutral whites and blacks too, which makes for a just about perfect bookshelf display in my opinion and would be easy to duplicate.
Speaking of urns, I did manage to hit a few yardsales and came up with this beauty recently. It’s not real wood, but has a beautiful shape and color, so for $2, it joined my collection and I switched out the painted brass urn that my white pumpkin was sitting in earlier for this nicer one and it is even better and the pumpkin sits up higher.
Decorating Tip:Â Urns like this are so multi-faceted and I always snatch them up, because they can be used in so many ways.
On the subject of yardsales, I’m going to be having my own at the end of the month and I’m shooting for October 24th which is next weekend, if I can get my act together in time. Any of you girls in the area, if you’d like to come to my sale, just email me for directions and I’d love for you to stop by!
There’s a fun giveaway coming up tomorrow, so come on back!

Rhoda, I too like the picture of the book shelves and will try to use some of the ideas found there. I love you new find.
I always enjoy coming to your blog, I just have not had any time lately to visit hardly anyone. Things need to slow down around here, this old lady is wearing down.
Be Back Tomorrow.

love the inspiration picture. Your $2 yard sale find looks a lot like my brass pedestal from southern living at home which cost a lot more than $2!
I wish I was in your area, I’m sure you have a lot of good things at your yard sale!

I put that same picture in my inspiration book. I LOVE everything about it, and the new pedestal you got was a steal at $2. Have you ever heard that people decorate their homes according to their favorite season? I love fall and all these colors could go in my home year round.

That’s a really pretty book shelf display, Rhoda. I love your new urn ~ that pumpkin fits so nicely in it. I do like the way they add to a display.

I love to get inspiration from a magazine. There have been so great fall issues this year.
A funny story about magazine inspiration…. The other day my son was flipping through “Pottery Barn teen” and saw a room that he loved and made the comment more than once he would like his room to look that way! His and I have really been trying to encourage him to be neater (he’s nine and a boy…), so I commented that maybe he ought wourk on his own room so that we would want to do more for his living area. Would you believe he has taken that picture and hung it on his corkborard and kept his room clean for over a week?! He has made his bookshelves look as neat and organized as in the picture and found a couple of accessories to show off his baseballs, etc….
I guess it goes to show kids have an eye as well!
Rhoda, I did have another blog a couple of years ago “Keeping Up With the Jones” I had taken a long blogging break and picked back up this spring.
Happy Wednesday!

What a wonderful post!! I have such a hard time making the bookshelves look pretty. Plus, I have the added difficulty of small children trying to “redecorate” them for me. So, they tend to be the taller parts of the bookcase. I am sure anyone with small children will understand that, but I still have a tough time. This post will hopefully help me with my bookcase block. ;0)

Rhoda, I can not believe you found the Barley twist pedestal for $2! I have had mine for a couple of years now and have never really done anything with it. I think I will plop a pumpkin in it now! The bookshelf is very nice. My problem is this huge open china cabinet that I just had to have when we moved to our new house. It is way out of my league, decorating wise! It is actually the BHG brand so I am constantly keeping my eye out for inspiration pics in that magazine! Have a great day!

Yes, that IS the barley twist pedestal….wow, for $2!! Great find. That’s exactly what I do with mine this time of year….plop a big fat ceramic pumpkin on mine, with some leaves around the bottom! It’s a great piece. You can also place a dinner plate on top for a nice serving piece! Congrats, and thanks for the other great ideas!

Wow – great find on the pedestal! Isn’t it heavy? We always tease that it will end up on CSI as the weapon…ha! Love the botanical feel of those shelves – thanks for the inspiration!

Thanks so much for the inspiration picture. I am so weak in accessorizing! I want to have a natural knack for it, but I don’t. So I have to resort to the next best thing and that’s copying someone else’s inspiration pics! It’s better than doing nothing at all. I love your new urn and the white pumpkin….perfect!!

Rhoda, Good steal on that pedestal, I have the same one, it is from Southern Living and believe me I paid alot more on mine. You can see mine on my recent post, “More Fall fluffling Ya’ll”, Love the bookcase display, I have alot of bookshelves and they don’t look that good, I may try to replicate. Have a nice day! Marla
