Please welcome my Southern friend, Shannon, today from right here in Birmingham. I introduced you to Shannon when I did a post about the Southern Women’s show, where she had a booth set up. Shannon has an online women’s magazine Southern Beauty, which I’d love for all of you to check out, with lots of great photos and stories that I know you’ll really enjoy.
Women LOVE makeup and fashion tips and Southern Beauty has both. You’ll be hearing more about the online magazine in the future, as I have partnered with Shannon on getting the word out about this fun online site on a regular basis, so you’ll be seeing links here to remind you about the magazine.
Shannon is coming by today to share some Fall makeup tips for all of us. I have always, always loved makeup and could use some new tips myself.
Welcome, Shannon!
The Top Color Trends for Fall from Southern Beauty
Hi, Ya’ll!
Thanks so much to my “Southern Sista” Rhoda for inviting me to visit with you today. Over at our home (Southern Beauty Magazine) we absolutely love this time of year. When the leaves start changing colors we know it’s time to make some changes to our makeup bags, as well. There are some really beautiful color trends this season for your eyes, lips, and nails and I’m sure you’ll find at least one (or more) that you can easily incorporate into your daily routine! So, here are my top color trends for Fall ’09…
Eye Makeup Wakeup!
Rich earth tones in forest greens, golds and browns can be really stunning worn as eye shadows or eyeliners. I recently started experimenting with these colors and I just love them! My latest experiment was a gold eyeshadow with a moss green eyeliner pencil. I have blue eyes and fair skin so I generally stay away from too much on the lids, but this duo was absolutely gorgeous…very professional, yet very chic!
Natural Brows –
The natural brow is back. Although we’ll always love the refined look… to go au naturel, just fill in any open areas with a brow pencil and top with a clear brow gel. The key words here are “neat and tidy.” Even with a natural brow you still want to keep everything in its place. Remember to use tiny strokes when using your brow pencil. This will help you to achieve a “feathery” look instead of the “drawn on” pencil look.
Foundations –
Keeping foundations sheer this season is still a top trend. Even the new high def foundations can offer minimal coverage and sheer looks. You can also use a tinted moisturizer or even make your own. Just take a dollop of your foundation and mix it with a smidge of your favorite moisturizer. Just remember to use a foundation and/or moisturizer with at least an SPF 15 in it. You’ll thank me later.
Cheeks –
Bright Pinks and contoured cheeks are blushing with the best of them these days. I’ve just started mixing my blushes recently and I love the outcome. I use a powder blush to define my cheeks in a slightly darker color (great for contouring) then I use a cream blush or cheek stain on the apples of my cheeks for an extra glow. (If you’re not sure where your apples are, just smile wide and they’ll appear!) Make sure to blend in fully so there are no lines of demarcation and with bright cheeks, make sure you go with a much softer eye and lip look.

The New Smokey Eye –
Instead of the usual blacks and grays from Smokey Eyes gone by, try the same technique with the newest mauves and metallics. You will still have that “smokey eye” look, only now your look is updated and a bit more approachable. Also, lower lashes will be getting extra attention this season so make sure you don’t forget about them.
Metallics –
Speaking of metallics, Rose Gold metallics are simply gorgeous. Most people can wear “gold” no matter what their eye color and the extra “pop” of color from the “rose” adds a soft yet glamorous touch. (Below: Estée Lauder Signature Eyeshadow Quad in Rose Gold, $35.)

Vivid Lip Color –
Color is king here. Pick a new shade and have some fun. Maybelline has a terrific new line of lipsticks called Color Sensational. The color is crisper from the pure pigments so what you see in the tube is the color you will see on your lips. We love this new technology and should never have another problem picking the perfect lip color again!
Dark Purples –
On nails, lips and eyes. Don’t be scared. Trust me, you can wear purple, too. The key is finding the right shade to fit your coloring. For years, I stayed away from purple eyeshadow due to an unfortunate case of really bad judgment from a super sweet lady that I worked with, but several weeks ago I decided to give it a try and discovered that I could, indeed, wear purple…and really like it! ALERT-ALERT Please, don’t wear purple on all three (nails, lips and eyes) at the same time. Pick one for the “pow” and then go with a neutral everywhere else. With the color purple you will definitely want to make a statement, but a little does go a long way.
Red Lipstick –
Always appropriate and not just for special occasions. Every girl should have at least one red lipstick in her makeup drawer. If you don’t have one, run out to your favorite store and pick one up as soon as you can. Even if you don’t generally like to wear a lot of makeup you’ll be surprised what this little “pick me up” can do for your mood. Again the key is finding the right shade, but this is one product that you really shouldn’t be without.
So those are my top trends for this season. I hope you’ve had some fun reading this post and if you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to let us know. You can also find us on our radio show on Friday mornings at 10:00 central at www.blogtalkradio.com/sobeautymag. Just look for “The Beauty Bunch!”
Hope to see you soon!

What a fun post! I am like a kid in a candy store when it comes to make-up and love to see what is “in”. Great ideas to get us through the holiday party season.
Have a fabulous Tuesday!

I love colored eye shadows, but always have a hard time applying them right. I don’t know why that is, because I can always do a neutral or smoky eye.
The gold/green combo sounds beautiful!

Hmm, I’ve been wearing pretty much the same make-up (colors, brands) since, well, late high school. Maybe, just maybe it’s time to branch out a little! I think some metallics, earth tones and bright lipstick are in order … I’ve always done the “natural” eyebrows as mine are VERY thick and looks silly otherwise – unless I have them done every day!
Thanks for this push in the right direction – I tend to ignore my own appearance, but it really does matter if I am taking care of myself as well as my family.

I always wear make-up, won’t go out of the house without it. I do have one problem. I didn’t listen to my Mother and over plucked my eyebrows and now have to pencil them in ALOT. I don’t know where to get an eye brow gel that she spoke of??? Can you ask her to let us know where they are sold, what brand etc? THANKS so much! XO, Pinky

Bummer……no time for makeup at this time of the year. Gotta get all those poinsettias out of the greenhouses. THEN I’ll take a bit of time to put on some makeup 🙂

Great tips! I love purple color and use to apply purple eyeshadow (and purple lips!) when going out. Thank you! I know my mistake now…
