Falling for the Fiddleleaf Fig

I know you must have noticed that there are Fiddleleaf Fig (ficus lyrata) trees all over the magazines.  I seem to see them everywhere and I’m afraid I’ve fallen for them too.  My sister has a Fiddleleaf in her master bedroom that she’s had for years, so she was ahead of this popular plant fad.  I’ve been on the lookout, but haven’t spotted them at my local big box store, so made a point to visit a Pike Nursery here in my town, since I was sure they had them. And they did!

If you’ll notice in the magazines, there are lots of them out there.

They make beautiful accent plants in a corner of a room and add so much life to a space.

I can’t imagine living without plants now and love surrounding myself with many of them.

What a statement these Fiddleleaf Figs make with their rich green leathery leaves.

Mine landed in my bedroom in front of the window and I hope I can keep it alive.  Let’s hope this Ficus variety is not as persnickety as the old ficus trees have been.  Ever lose all the leaves on a ficus?  Yes, yes I have!  My sister has had good luck with hers, so hopefully I will too.

This one came from Pike Nursery and was  $40.

Those vibrant green leaves work well in my bedroom and fills up this corner.

I got that pretty planter at the Ballard Designs outlet in Roswell.

Fiddleleaf Fig (2)

Hello Fiddleleaf Fig, welcome to my world!

Do you have a Fiddleleaf and are you going to try one too?

I totally agree that plants add so much to a home. The pot you chose should get honorable mention…. it’s a stunning choice.

I have two on my porch. I can leave them out year round as we live in Florida. The first one started in our living room and lost all of its leaves when we were gone for 10 days. It made a recovery and now loves being on the porch.

Looks wonderful, Rhoda! I love the look of these… do they require bright light?

Heidi, I think they like plenty of light, so I open my blinds every morning. My sis has hers by a bedroom window and it’s been doing well for years.

It looks awesome. I’ve had my eye on one for a
while. I need to hurry or there won’t be any left.
Did you get the medium or large planter from Ballards?

How many benjamina ficus plants have I killed. I am a serial killer!:) Right now I have a fake one out of necessity but I may check out the fiddleleaf if yours makes it Rhoda. I am looking for a screen to replace my old fake tree as a room divider and I think I have found one on Overstock. I am trying to get rid of all fake plants.

Itlooks great in your bedroom, and yes, house plants have been part of my home decor forever. They add so much. However, ficus trees are pains in the neck. You’ll be throwing it out and glad of it sorry to say. It might and might not do well. Too finicky. Believe it or not orchids grow and bloom well for me. Northern exposure. Little water is the trick. Large peace lilies in big container will do better for you. Give that ficus fiddleleaf away.

OH, I just got mine from Home Depot this past weekend! They had big ones for 50$ and little ones for 10$. I got a little one for my living room. I’ve researched how to take care of it. Some say its easy and others say it’s tricky. I’m hoping I can keep mine alive.

I want one too but have not found any…to Home Depot I go! The old type ficus was a mess, I kept mine alive and pretty for years but the fallen leaves were a constant. This is a different type and if the leaves do fall they are large enough to pick up! How about water, does your sister allow it to dry out?

The picture of yours is my favorite. I like your planter and how far up on the plant it comes. Shows less trunk/stem and really makes it look leafy.

The fiddleleaf fig is beautiful … and, speaking of beautiful, just saw your wonderful home featured this month on The Old Painted Cottage. Congratulations on an honor well deserved! Though I’ve looked at pictures of your home so many times (faithful blog reader that I am!), the ones you did for Jennifer are fabulous. Just sorry I could not pin from the site. Thanks for all the great eye candy.

I was wondering about lighting as well. I have a corner in my bedroom it would be perfect for, but that particular spot doesn’t get much light……..Love the shape of your’s!

I’m not sure about this kind of ficus, but I’ve had a benjamina ficus for 8 years and it too lost all its leaves. But eventually they grew back. I did lose one of them at that same time but the one I still have made it. I remember reading that they are light sensitive so they are subject to leaf drop anytime they are moved. And that means even when you move the pot around in the same spot. I don’t know if that’s true but I have been really careful since and haven’t had a problem. Good luck!

It is gorgeous, wishing you luck in keeping that way. We used to have a fig tree in our livingroom. Everytime we moved it, the
shock would make it’s leaves fall. After 10 years, it got little bugs on it, trying several times to soap it up, rinse, dry, the few leaves left sent it to the trash unfortunately. We now have a
lovely peace Lilly 15 years old still blooms year round. Enjoy!

It is a gorgeous plant and looks lovely in your bedroom. Be sure to use caution, however, with your roommates dog. Parts of the Fiddle Leaf are toxic to pets if ingested.

that is one plant I don’t have. I don’t think my husband would let me have one more plant. Our house looks like a greenhouse during the winter when I bring all the plants in from the porch. Nothing I have can stay outside in Northeast Georgia mountains. Now if you are interested in blooming cactus or pregnant onions, I’m your girl.

Love the planter. Can’t beat the deals you can find at the Ballard Designs Outlets. My mom scored 2 of the planters like yours in the larger size at an unbelievably low price at the Ballard’s Backroom on DeFoor Ave. You can find amazing deals there.
