Fashion Over 50: Capes and Boots

Today’s Fashion over 50 post is fun!  Here in Georgia, it’s not quite cold yet, but there has been a chill in the air that is Fallish.  We are having some cooler temps, but it’s not yet full-on boot weather.  I love me some boots!  So, I’m looking ahead to the not so distant future when I’ll be getting out my boots and layering on the layers for comfort and warmth, leaving behind the summer casuals.

I like to add a few new pieces to my wardrobe for Fall and Winter and this black and white houndstooth cape caught my eye from Nordstrom, so I ordered it.  I’m also an Alabama football fan, so this would fit right into the Crimson Tide scene.  I apologize in advance to my Auburn friends! 🙂

Thought I share a few ways that I would wear this piece.  Cowboy boots are casual and fun and I love mine. They are by Tony Llama, by the way, and I bought them for my birthday about 3 years ago.  Here’s the cape at Nordstrom (affiliate link).

These are my skinny jeans from Rock and Republic (Kohls affiliate link), along with an emerald green Simple Comfort top from Covered Perfectly (affiliate link).  I’m featuring this top in green and white in this post.  Great top with 3/4 length sleeves.

This cape doesn’t have sleeves, you just throw it around your shoulders like a shawl and it drapes with a pretty fringe on the bottom.  Great for warmth when you need a little something, but don’t want a heavy coat.

And if I happen to be cheering for an Alabama game (which I’m known to do!), I’ll be right in style with that college team, sporting the black and white houndstooth.  I love black and white anyway and this is a fun piece for layering. Of course, you could add any bright solid color you choose underneath for a fun accent.

I did notice that this fabric is loosely woven and will be prone to the threads pulling, so be aware of that.  I’ve already pulled a couple of them.

I added some of my brown jewelry for a casual with brown boots look, along with a brown leather belt.  Leather cuff from my friend Lucy with Lucy’s Inspired jewelry, necklace is Stella and Dot from a couple years ago.  Earrings I have had for years.

fashion over 50097_20151005

Next look, is black jeggings (jeans/leggings) from Kohl’s from last year.  Brand is Nine West Vintage America boho skinny (affiliate link, this is a used clothing site).

fashion over 50099_20151005

White top from Covered Perfectly (same as the green one above).  Boots I got last year and they are Ralph Lauren.

fashion over 50100_20151005

Added gold jewelry to this outfit.

The cape from the back.

fashion over 50121_20151005

Here’s the jewelry I’m wearing, all gold tones.  Bracelet from Wrist Soiree.  Necklaces I’ve had for a long time.  Earrings from the Country Living fair last year.

fashion over 50110_20151005

And the third way I styled this cape is with a black dress.  I got this from The Limited a couple of years ago (Forenza brand).  It’s above the knee, so I would only wear it with tights and the cape gives a nice layer of coverage too, since the dress is sleeveless.

fashion over 50112_20151005

I would definitely wear this to a holiday party.

fashion over 50115_20151005

The studs on the dress are both gold and silver tones, but I opted to wear all silver jewelry with this one.

Necklace I have had for several years, it came from the Mart and is by Art by Amy.  Bracelet came from Birmingham.  Earrings I have had a long time as well and the watch is from the flash sale site Everyday Icing (they haven’t done a sale in awhile).

So, that is a fun fringed cape and how I will wear it this Fall and Winter.  This is my first cape and I think I’ll enjoy it!

I was just about to dig out my ruanas and do a cape post. I love those things!! It doesn’t get cold enough in the Winter here for a big coat so I have several ruanas. So much easier to maneuver the car driving in a ruana. Well…the temps get in the teens and single digits at times and I guess we have just acclimated ourselves so we get along fine with layers rather than a big old coat.:-) I love your boots. I finally have booties this year after many years of no boots. I can’t wear the higher boots very well because of my little short chubby legs.:-) But I am definitely looking for more booties.
Love the hounds tooth with the short black dress. That is another thing I want to do is a black dress post. I need to take notes.LOL

Hey, Pat, I have to look up that word, never heard ruanas. You are always stylish, so no doubt you’ll get those boots & booties!

Oh my goodness! I know we shouldn’t covet, but I love houndstooth!!! I’m from GA, but I’m a BIG AL fan! Roll Tide!!!! I own several houndstooth items in my wardrobe.
I love all of these looks, Rhoda! Add a crimson red teeshirt and you’re ready for the game. I’m going to check out this poncho. Thanks for sharing!!

Love the cape and how versatile it is to go from casual to dressy! Rhoda, you have such a great sense of style and look great. I’d love to wear that cape but since I’m only 5′ 1″ I’m afraid it wouldn’t look as good on me. Do you know if it would work for someone petite?

Elizabeth, that is a good question. It would definitely hang down further on a petite person, probably down to your ankles. I’m not sure how that would look so I think it might be trial and error. Maybe go and try one on in the store before you commit to one. I think you’d definitely need some higher heels to balance it out.

You forgot to apologize to LSU fans! I love houndstooth, but Bryant ruined it for us. LOL.
Just kidding. My dad is from Bama and I like the Tide, except when they play LSU and when they go to championship and we don’t. Our game moved to Baton Rouge this weekend due to flooding in S Carolina. Prayers for them ????

Ha, Renee, I didn’t know there was a connection between houndstooth and LSU!

There’s not. It’s just that it’s a classic look and I’d love to wear it on non game days, but a true tiger fan can’t wear it, EVER because of the Bama connection haha

I bought a poncho that looks just like that a couple weeks ago…I have it in my car to return. Guess I’ll rethink that. I thought it looked too long, but seeing you in the same one in different outfits, I’ll give it another try.
    Thank you!

I’m looking forward to seeing your sweater coat post. I wear these in the fall / winter and love them they are comfy and I think very pretty on women over 50. Rhoda: This outfit is the sharpest, smartest thing you have modeled for us-first class -I know I was over 50 maybe close to 60 before I discovered I had to have Capes…a prayer partner of mine knew I was looking for one and showed up at my office with two of hers to gift me..both long-one black/fringe & the other a fabulous PURPLE…Since then I have added a few others, the most recent a short one in shades of grey to off white..Great post-

Here in CT, I’ve worn three pairs of boots, a cape and a pashmina in the last week. Plus a lot of black. Autumn is def my favorite season for fashion. So many stylish possibilities!
