Fashion Over Fifty: Booties

I’m back with a couple more outfits to share with you, showing the 2 new pair of booties that I got recently.  Booties have been really popular for the last couple of years, but I’ve just decided to get on that bandwagon and this year, I added a couple of pair to my wardrobe and I’m really enjoying them.  These are great with ankle length pants or jeans and they can also be worn with bootcut pants too.  Most of the younger girls are wearing them with no socks (or hidden socks), but I think they can work with tights too.  With my black booties and black pants, I did wear tights (or black dress socks would work too) with them for a long lean look and solid black always works.

So, if you decide to try some booties, there are a couple of options to wear them.  I tried them sockless and with socks.  Either can work.

black booties 2

These are the first booties I got.  Black suede from DSW shoes and they are by Vince Camuto.  They are around 3” high and that’s about the max I can go these days.

So, let’s talk about shoes.  You will not see me wearing really high heels anymore.  Those days of wearing spiky heels are over for me.  As I get older, my feet can’t tolerate super high heels anymore and even though I love being stylish, I still try to be practical too in my shoe choices.  So 2 1/2 to 3” is about my max for heels these days.  And I won’t wear them all day long anymore.  These are good for about 4 hours, then I’m ready to take them off. They are actually pretty comfortable and I added some foam inserts to make them even better.  I developed bunions on my feet about 10 years ago after working retail for a few months and being on my feet for hours in heels.  Worst thing for your feet!  So, even though I understand why lots of women go for comfort in shoes, I still am not ready for geriatric shoes.

I want style and some comfort too!  We do have to take care of our feet.  I like the wedge heel on these shoes, they are still easy to walk in.

black pants gray sweater

My first outfit is skinny pants (by Calvin Klein, found at TJ Maxx), my vintage coat, and a gray wool sweater I also found at TJ Maxx.  These were found a couple of years ago.  I wore black tights under the pants and my black booties, making a long lean look with all black.  These outfits were all from my trip to the Grove Park Inn.

black and gray outfit

The sweater skims over my hips and hides enough that I feel comfortable in the form fitting pants.  These pants are very comfortable and have spandex in them.  I love that I can wear them tucked in boots or out with heels.  They are made like jeans with pockets and are similar to riding pants.  They say Calvin Klein jeans on the tag inside, but are made from cotton/poly/spandex.  You should be able to find something similar out there.

gray sweater and jewelry

I mentioned I’m really getting into wearing my gold jewelry again and opted for that mix with this outfit.  The gold bracelets are from Wrist Soiree and I wrote about them already (see them close up below).  Love the blingy gold bracelets.  Those chains around my neck, I’ve had for years.  The tassel one is from the old Premier jewelry line.  Remember them? They were a home jewelry business years ago and I had lots of their jewelry at one time.  The black and gold chain I don’t remember where I got it, but I have had it a long time.  I’m glad I saved the gold jewelry, it’s been fun wearing it all over again.  I don’t mind mixing jewelry, however, and often mix gold and silver. Most of my rings are silver these days and I love chunky rings and big fashion watches.

black pants scarf

Another outfit I wore was the same black Calvin Klein pants, tucked into my flat boots.  I wore a light gray Ann Taylor long sleeve top that I found at Goodwill for $5.  I do love finding things at Goodwill occasionally.  You can find some bargains and nearly new clothes if you look. The long black sweater is one I picked up from TJ Maxx and is a good piece for layering.

black sweater gray scarf

I layered my gray and black scarf and added my shell jewelry.

jeans faux fur

Here’s another way I wore the booties, casual look with jeans.  These are Berlin by Rock and Republic skinny jeans from Kohls.

Cody is checking out the fashion show inside the door.

black booties

I copied the younger gals on this one and didn’t wear socks or tights. You can find socks that hide if you want to wear them under your booties for comfort.  I’ve seen some girls wearing thicker socks and letting them peek out too between the booties and the jeans, so that is something to experiment with and you can find a look and feel that you like.  Most of the girls I’ve seen wearing booties also turn up their jeans like this in a little cuff and I liked that look too.

gold jewelry

This longer cable sweater is a Ralph Lauren from TJ Maxx too.  I find a lot of good basic pieces at TJ Maxx that I have added to my wardrobe over the years.  The faux leopard fur vest was passed on to me from my sister.  She gives me things she no longer wears, so I have a few things from her closet too. I’ve enjoyed this vest a lot.  It’s fun to wear during the winter months and is toasty warm.

gold-jewelry_thumb.jpg

My fave trio of bracelets to stack, the blingy stone and link tassel bracelet are from Wrist Soiree (had a giveaway with her awhile back), and the black and gold bangle bracelet is from C Wonder, which I’ll share more clothes from them later.

jewelry-Collage_thumb.jpg

I layered my gold bracelets again with the gold necklaces and this is a boyfriend watch that I got from the flash sale Facebook jewelry site, Everyday Icing.  If you sign up for their emails, you’ll get notice of all their sales and they have some good things.  These are 2 pair of gold earrings I’ve recently added to my collection.  The rings are from Saks Fifth Ave. outlet and the lower pair from the Country Living fair.  I do not spend a fortune on my jewelry, but love a variety of chunky jewelry.

faux fur back

I like the longer sweater and it covers enough with these jeans.  I definitely would not wear this sweater and vest with skin tight leggings though.  I always wear longer tops with leggings.

As you can see, I’m definitely a jeans wearing girl.  I have always loved jeans and they can be dressed up or down by what you put with them.

suede booties

This is my 2nd pair of booties I recently got and these are a khaki suede from American Eagle Outfitters.  I opted to wear socks with these and had a pair in my drawer that match these perfectly. They are a sweater sock and the same color as the booties.  I sort of scrunched them under my jeans. These are the same Kohl’s skinny jeans from above. I just ordered another pair of these jeans in a bootcut.  I love my cowboy boots too with bootcut jeans.  I’ll show you those later on.

Excuse these pics, they are not the best since I did them with my tripod and timer.  It’s hard to focus on something and then jump in the picture.

beige suede booties

The booties up close. They have tassel zippers on each side of the boot and they are comfortable too.

booties sweater

This sweater is from TJ Maxx too and I’d love to find more like this one.  It’s fairly long, but also longer in the back than the front.  It’s a Calvin Klein brand.  I added a pretty scarf that I found at Steinmart, in black, khaki and cream.  That chunky brown leather cuff bracelet, I bought from my friend, Lucy who has an online jewelry store, Lucy’s Inspired, selling her vintage treasure collection that she makes herself.  Love her things!

American eagle outfitter booties

Here’s another look at the booties with my socks peeking out.  I’m really like this look and the socks are great for chilly weather.

So, that’s a look at how I’m wearing my new booties and a few ideas on putting things together.

Have you tried any booties yet?  I’ve got 2 pair of them, so I’ll show you more ways that I’m wearing them later.  I’m really enjoying adding them to my wardrobe and they make me feel very stylish.  No reason why we over-50 ladies can’t wear the booties too!

By the way, since I’ll be doing lots more fashion posts this year, I added a new Category at the top for Fashion, Beauty and Fitness, so anytime you want to see all the Fashion posts, click the Categories menu at the top and click on it!

Love looking at your fashion pictures! You look stylish while still dressing age appropriate. I can’t wear heels at all now, my feet hurt just looking at them, but I live in Florida and don’t have much need to really dress up, I live more in flip-flops or sandals year round, and that is fine with me.

You are so nice! You would look good in anything!

I bought the same booties you have and I like them a lot! You look like your having fun with your clothes! I get wrapped up in daily drama that I forget to give it more thought to what I’m wearing :). Thanks for the reminder

Loooookin’ good! Here in the midwest, there is such a short window of weather during which to wear those great layered/sweater-y looks before having to cover it all up with a serious coat. Love the khaki booties with chunky socks!

Cute, Rhoda! I knew it was time to replace my Beatles booties (1″ heel) from the 90s when I was recently seeing lots of deteriorating flaky leather lining bits on my socks afterward, lol. I bought two new pair this fall (1.5″ heel), and gave away a 3″ pair of wedge heel booties I had had for about 4 yrs but hardly ever wore due to discomfort. My 20-something niece, however, loves them!

I love booties, and I used to wear them with opaque tights and plaid, wool kilts in the 90s for work, with a blazer – very parochial, not too far from my uniforms of old – I loved that look. Now, like you, I like the sporty mix of slim jeans, alternating with my bootcuts. I even have my sister (in her mid-60s) wearing the slim jean, and she looks terrific in them. With antiquing and moving lots of furniture, our uniform these days are slim jeans, flat sport shoes, long-sleeve ts, vests and scarves. Accessories are great, and I love altered pieces that are hand-crafted too.

Rita, sounds like you are working the skinny jeans too, love that so many shapes and sizes can wear them. And aren’t these booties fun to wear?

My daughter in law just turned me on to Bernie Mev shoes! I love them. I am a mentor at our local MOPs( Mothers of Preschoolers group) and when I wore them to the last meeting all the girls bragged on my shoe choice. They are stylish and comfortable!!

I’m 69 and have been wearing shooties (shoe boots are not called booties) for several years. This is not a recent 2 year style. I too wear slim NYDJ jeans and leggings and FYI it’s not cool to cuff your jeans with a tiny cuff like that. Just roll it down dear. Showing that sliver of skin isn’t for the over 50 crowd dear. Try wearing leg warmers over your slim pants and make sure they go down to cover the tops of your shooties. regarding your jewelry. You’re really showing your age now. That’s how we used to wear it in Dallas back in the late 80’s. Way too much – too heavy – too old looking. No need to wear everything you own at one time.

Oh I could go on but why?????? Just unsubscribe me pleeeezzzzzzze!

Hi, you don’t have to agree with what I’m wearing or how I wear it, that’s fine with me. Everyone has their own ideas on how to dress at this age. I took my cue from the younger gals on the jeans rolled, so if you have a problem with that, you’ll have a whole generation way younger than me to take on. Leg warmers….no thanks, that’s definitely 80’s and I’m not going back to that. As far as jewelry, if you haven’t noticed the stacking jewelry trend, then you’re behind. There are lots of ladies wearing stacks of bracelets and bold jewelry is always in style. As for unsubscribing, you can do that yourself in the email you get from me. Unsubscribe is at the bottom. Bye-bye!

Rhoda, I think you should take Rebamjr’s advice. Nothing says current like a 69-year-old woman in leg warmers and “shooties”. Which, as an aside, does not mean booties:

I’m digging all the replies to that comment. Who can explain it! Anyway, regarding leg warmers… the new look that’s cute are heavy socks rolled over the top of the bootie or peeking out,, but I think it’s better for taller boots. I’ve seen alot of tutorials making them out of old sweater arms. They call them “leg warmers”, but you definitely won’t look like you auditioned for Flashdance if you wear them.
I loved this post and haven’t yet jump on the short bootie trend yet, but you may have just inspired me.

I’m 681/2 , and while I’m not thin enough to pull off your awesome looks, I do wear stackable bracelets and long necklaces, sometimes also in multiples. There is no need to be SO rude to someone that is just showing us some cute outfits, that she happens to like. Nobody is forcing you to like her style. I have never heard of “shoeties” It is definitely Booties, but whatever. I just don’t understand why you got your feathers all ruffled, unless you are just jealous. I hope since you are not going to visit Rhoda’s blog, you will find something to do, instead of putting people down. Visit nursing homes and share your style savvy or go to a jewelry show and learn about stacking. There are a number of fun things you could do. God Bless and have a great day!

I was hoping you’d do a fashion post today! I’m trying to incorporate booties too. They look so cute on you. I still can’t quite fall in love with the ankle showing between the jeans and booty but I’m trying. You’ve convinced me to go to TJ…haven’t been in awhile.

Kerry, I haven’t tried them with dresses yet. My legs are so skinny that I’m not sure I’d like the look, but I may try it and see, with thick tights. Some of my friends a little older than me wear booties with dresses. They are shorter and have shapely legs and they look great on them, so I’d say go for it.

Last year I bought three pairs of booties at J C Penney’s on incredible clearance. I am so thankful I did. Moving from Phoenix to Fort Worth the temperature is definitely colder and I appreciate the warmth they bring versus wearing flats.
