Feature Friday: Designing Domesticity

Hailing from Charlotte, NC by way of Chicago, Liz from Designing Domesticity is another new blogger who I’ve just met recently.  She and her family moved into their Charlotte house less than 2 years ago and have already done some amazing transformations on this 1980’s home.  I love seeing homes stuck in another decade brought up to date with some creative changes and style and Liz has done just that in their home.  She’s still working on it, but has done so much to improve this house, which has great bones, just needed some TLC.  She talks about getting the house and it had been on the market for awhile, until they came along and got the score.

exterior

Here’s the exterior of their 80’s home in Charlotte.

foyer to dining room view rug switch

Inside, the house has some great bones with nice hardwoods and lots of molding detail.  I love Liz’s fresh traditional style. She has a mix of traditional and modern in the house and it looks so good.

dining room light

She did a fresh graphic wallpaper in the foyer and peeking into the dining room, we see navy walls and pretty traditional furniture.

dining room light 2

Love, love this modern chandelier mixed in there with the gold tones.

new kitchen

The kitchen got an overhaul too with new countertops and painted the existing cabinets which really took them out of the 80’s.

kitchen sink

Love the lantern over the sink and the gray island and dark countertops.  Beautiful kitchen renovation!

desk nook

A kitchen desk update looks great too.

living room built ins 2

Built in bookcases in the living room are fresh and fun with some beautiful accessories.  I love how she layered this room with patterns, traditional furniture and lots of fun pillows.

living room 2

A traditional wing chair in one corner anchors the bookcase.

living room gallery wall

Love this gallery wall, a casual mix of fun things to look at.

living room pillows

Different fabrics and pillows make it an eclectic space, with lots of interest.

living room built ins

Doesn’t this look like a cozy space to hang out?

BR2

The breakfast room has a casual wood table and French style chairs.

hutch

Love that rustic hutch with all the pottery.

BR3

Another beautiful lantern hangs over the breakfast table. She had me at lanterns!

den fireplace

They have a living room and den space and how pretty is this?

den

The den space has a newly recovered chair in a beautiful blue fabric.  Love this!

girl's room

Liz has two cute little girls, 6 and 3 and they each have a sweet girly room.

girls dresser

girls room2

Girly room two. Love the colors and mix of older furniture in each room.

girls room dresser 2

Sweet space for girls to grow up.

ikea playroom sleeper sofa

Another bonus room is playroom and general hangout space.

dots3

These gold polkadots add some fun to the room.

back porch

Outdoor spaces are like having an extra room in the house and this deck with pergola is so inviting.

porchseating 2

Love how she has added a rug and wicker furniture for a special place to sit.

porch seating

Doesn’t that look fun?

porch chair

Fresh mix of fabrics and of course, I love the wicker.

potted plants 2

Plants line the stairs outside.

I love Liz’s fresh approach to decorating and I knew you all would love it too. Hope you’ll stop by and visit Liz at Designing Domesticity.  Happy Friday!

Love seeing the transformation! We are currently doing a total home renovation on a 1970’s fixer upper, trying to bring it into this decade! It takes lots of work! Loved the post!

Liz, would you be able to tell where the beautiful blue print chair fabric from your den came from? I love it!

In case Liz doesn’t come back and see this, head over to her blog and I think her email is available over there. I’m sure she’ll be glad to answer.

Have you ever written a negative review of a comp’d or sponsored product?

Hi, Rhonda, when I work with companies and I’m trying out their products, I try to be fair and honest. If I really didn’t like a product I used or hated it, I would tell the company and not be comfortable writing about it. Luckily, that hasn’t happened to me so far. I do sponsored posts introducing readers to companies and brands and then they can make up their own minds about trying out the products if it is a giveaway or website that I’m sharing with my readers.

I love the lantern over the sink. We are updating our home with a few minor changes and I would love lantern pendants over my bar. Still looking…

This is maybe my favourite Feature Friday. It should be in a magazine. I could move right it.

Having a modern/rustic home myself, I love the traditional blended with modern look. Love the furniture fabric, particularly the burst of color chairs in the Family Reading Room. However as lovely as the home is, you would find me hanging out on the porch! Thank you Liz and Rhoda.

Would the homeowner be willing to share their paint colors? I absolutely ADORE how she uses different colors in each room and they all transition so well!
