Feature Friday: Janet’s Fab Vintage Kitchen

Kitchen makeovers are some of my most favorite DIY projects to check out.  Updating a kitchen can really take a house from drab to fab and today’s makeover is a fantastic one.  Done on less than $500, this is one stunning kitchen redo.  With a lot of elbow grease and loads of creativity, Janet has transformed her kitchen to a dreamy, cottage kitchen of her wildest imagination.

Meet Janet, from The Empty Nester.

You are going to be amazed at what all Janet accomplished in this kitchen and I hope it gives you all some ideas on how to punch up your own kitchen.  Take a look at the Before above, what looks to be builder’s grade oak that we have all seen in every new home for the last 20 years.  Yes, it’s wood, but it is certainly not exciting.  With some creamy white paint and a lot of creative ideas, Janet’s kitchen is now drool-worthy and looks so much more updated for 2011.I love the accent of yellow in the back of her cabinets, as well as the cute little skirt in front of the sink.  Cute and cottagey, the skirt adds some interest and softens everything up.She added some cool corbels under the cabients for a more custom look.  Adding those moldings are such a great way to add architectural interest to a drab area.Beautiful beadboard makes a difference too.See the impact the corbels and beadboard make?I love the blue walls and all the details that Janet thought out.  You can find all the details over at Janet’s blog on cost and how she came up with the huge changes on less than $500.  That is amazing!  Go on over and say hello to Janet and tell her I sent you.  I love featuring new blogger’s with fantastic projects.

Hope you enjoyed this kitchen as much as I did!

Congrats, Jessie!  I have emailed you, so get back to me and I’ll tell you how to get your prize.

For all the rest of you who LOVE the jewelry from {simple starfish}, but didn’t win this one, Christine is offering ALL of you a 15% discount for one item from her shop and it will be good for ONE week from today with the coupon code ‘southernhospitality’. I hope you’ll think about Mother’s Day gifts, birthday surprises for that special friend, or just a sweet treat for yourself.  Enjoy!

Also, I’d like to mention one of my sponsors today and especially alert those of you in Birmingham.  I hope you’ll check out Classic Home Decor Consignment in Pelham when you are looking for some furniture or accessory items for your home.  I didn’t get a chance to stop by there before I left town, but it looks like a fun store to browse, so I hope you local AL girls will give it a whirl.  You can click the button on my right sidebar too.

I love makeovers and this is particularly inspiring- a good lick of white paint and boy you’ve got a whole new look – I have horrible veneer cabinets in my kitchen and something HAS to be done soon!!
    Thanks for the inspiration!

This kitchen is sure inspiring. I love the dash of yellow with the blue.
Her plate rack is stunning. They are hard to find here. A little paint and elbow grease sure goes a long way. Thanks for sharing.

Love her kitchen remodel. The cabinets without doors and the bright yello paint add such a nice touch! Beautiful.

    Good Morning Rhoda,

What a lovely surprise this morning to see my kitchen being featured on your fabulous blog. I’m honored.

It was so much fun and very rewarding to restyle my kitchen. All the changes I made are things anyone can do and do affordably.

For those who are hesitate to paint your cabinets…I look at it this way…

Once that first brush stroke of primer goes on it’s no going back…go for it!!!!

Thanks again and have a great weekend,
    Janet xox

    Hi Rhoda,
Let me first say that I have been praying for you, you are a wonderful, sweet lady.
I love this kitchen makeover, it is really beautiful and how wonderful that she managed to do it for $500, that in itself is a miracle.

What a great surprise to see my friend Janet’s kitchen on your blog. She is truly an amazing artist and her talents run the gambit from her lovely kitchen, slipcovers and her every thrifty self with wool.

Beautiful kitchen & very inspiring, as we are moving to a home with nice but basic oak cabinets. My hubby is very hesitant to do the painting thing. I’m going to have to work on him about that.

I’m glad you posted this because I’ve been wanting to paint my cabinets white, but I’ve had concerns with my white appliances possibly clashing. These pictures prove that white cabinets go just fine with white appliances. A lot of the time blogs show “inexpensive” remodels where everything changes including appliances. I would LOVE to see more posts like this ones 🙂

Thanks so much Rachel for your sweet comment. To keep on budget, I had to pick my battles…no new appliances and no new countertops. I was still thrilled with the results.
