Hey, there and Happy Friday to you all!
Today’s Feature Friday is an inspiring one. Â I know I say that a lot, but this blogger really knows how to transform a space and she does things on a budget too. Â Her 80’s Kansas City home has been a true labor of love with lots of planning in the process. Â You can just tell that Gwen from The Makerista has a great eye for detail and is able to see things in her mind’s eye and what the end result will be. Â This 80’s house is hardly recognizable now with all the renovations they’ve done and I have a feeling they aren’t finished yet. Gwen’s been blogging since 2013 and I’ve so enjoyed seeing this house transformation come about. Â It’s very inspiring to see what you can do with an older home to bring it up to date.
Gwen’s style is rooted in traditional and classic, but with definite modern accents and she loves bold and moody rooms. Â Prepare to be amazed at some of these photos and enjoy the tour!
Here’s the Before of their house, not bad at all, an 80’s Colonial.
But with lots of white paint and black accents, the house just looks fantastic now.
I love the update on the porch roof. She mentioned that the sides and back of their house is vinyl siding, but they painted it all.
A bold wine color on the front door.
The dining room is black and the library behind her is a deep red burgandy shade. Â Very moody and dramatic, both rooms.
Gwen has such a nice eye for style and details.
Gwen and her youngest of 3 children, Domino.
The dark and bold dining room with a mural.
This room was all wood paneled when they bought the house, but she lightened it all up with lighter paint. I love all the moldings.
The color tones of the furniture is so inviting too.
The hallway behind leads to the kitchen.
And example of Gwen’s vignette styling.
Here’s another room with a dramatic makeover, the kitchen.
Before, all 80’s and orange tone oak.
And After, with a complete gut job renovation and sage green cabinets, mixed with black and white floors.
I really love this, it looks great in her house and those windows. Very nice!
The powder room is at the end of the hallway, so she blended it right in.
The master bedroom is calming and pretty.
Through those doors is a combo sunroom/office/nursery.
She carved out space for all since this room is right off the master. I love this!
I love her clever use of an oval basket as a changing pad.
Gwen has 2 boy and 2 girls and this is the latest makeover for her older daughter.
So pretty!
Her son’s room is very cute as well.
The man cave was a recently finished space.
The back of the house got a dramatic transformation that stopped me in my tracks when I saw it on Instagram. Â Check out the Before.
And the after! Â Isn’t that amazing? Â They added a one level Trex style deck with step up and completely changed that balcony railing and updated the under porch.
With all the while and black furniture, it looks like Nantucket. Â So pretty!
Gwen has completely transformed this space along with her handy husband.
I can imagine their backyard is party central in the summer months.
I just love that Chippendale railing on the top. So classic!
A backyard potting bench.
And another space in the backyard corner that got an update.
I just loved this photo of Gwen and her family at Christmas last year. Aren’t they a beautiful family? Â Stop by Gwen’s blog, The Makerista and check out all her projects. Â She doesn’t blog as much as she used to and has cut back to concentrate more on her family, which I applaud her for! Â You can catch up with her on Instagram too for more up to date happenings.
That is a beautiful house – love her bold colors, I think I’m in the minority’s but I love her bold colors and use of traditional features as well. Inspiration to go bold – thanks,
Honestly – this is going to be ranked in my top ten favorites of feature Friday homes. Stunning. Livable. Grand but not fussy. A+ makeover. Thanks for the photos, Rhoda.
HI, Becky, glad you enjoyed, I think Gwen is so talented and saw the potential in this house and it truly making it unique.
Thanks for sharing. I following the Makerista’s blog and Instragram and have learned so much!
Hi Rhoda, as usual, you have provided us a beautiful home to drool over. The kitchen is my most favorite room, I love the cabinets and the floor. Thank you
Not much of a fan of the wine and pink, and the other dark rooms. The light rooms are much prettier in my opinion. A lot of hard work has obviously gone into this house. a big pat on the back for that. The dark just isn’t my taste.
Wowza! I love everything about this home, especially the bold use of color! The transformation is just amazing.
Rhoda, whatever happened with the home you were helping to update? It was off to such a great start, but I know sometimes life gets in the way.
HI, Roxanne, yes they had to slow down due to the budget. You know how that is!
Love Gwen”s house and style. She’s been on of my design inspirations for years. Thanks for sharing!
