In recent years, the “slow movement” has been making a comeback. Have you heard about slow food, slow textiles, and other slow movements? It’s the opposite of how many of us are living now: glued to the latest technology, fast-paced lives, hurried and frenzied days. Sound familiar? Well, the slow movement is all about slowing down and remembering how things used to be. Before we all got into this hectic lifestyle. And slowing down is really a good thing for families.
According to author Shannon Honeybloom, it all starts at home. In her new book, Making a Family Home, she shows readers room-by-room how to cultivate an enriching shelter, one that encourages children to learn and imagine.
Combining the mindfulness of modern homemakers with an understanding of childhood development, and an attention to universal truths such as love, goodness, and beauty, Honeybloom outlines simple steps towards creating a beautiful and nurturing home.
“Anxiety-driven over-parenting has reach a peak, and parents everywhere are yearning to get ‘back to basics’ at home and with their children,” says Honeybloom, a parent and former educator. “In the end, it’s not about enrichment classes, educational videos, multiple after-school activities. It’s not about spending a lot of money or buying a lot of things. It’s about creating a calm, beautiful, and healthy home for our families. Such a home is the foundation for happiness and success in the world.”
It’s a soft-cover book with full color pictures and lots of good and practical ideas on making your home a haven for your children. She addresses all the rooms in the house, as well as outdoor spaces and her ideas are specifically geared towards nurturing a comfortable and creative environment for the kids.
I received a free copy of the book to review for myself and they are giving away 3 copies of the book to my readers, so all you have to do is leave a comment here to be eligible.
Giveaway will be open until Sunday evening at 6 pm Central time.

How I would love to receive of this book! I’m such a book lover and seem to have one in my hands anytime I’m not working! This book sounds so pretty and so helpful – just seeing the front cover reminds me of my childhood, bike-riding, and playing at my grandmother’s on balmy nights, trying to catch fireflies.
It’s only too true that today’s world is too rapidly speeding by. I want my boys to know that it’s good to slow down and enjoy some simple things – not having to have every new “tech-y” thing that comes on the market. The things I’ve always wanted to instill in my boys is that they’re loved unconditionally, that our home is their safe refuge from all life’s troubles – whether it’s a day when they’ve made a bad grade at school or if they’ve broken up with a girlfriend and just need some reassurance and TLC. I want it to be a place where their friends love to come and feel welcome. My husband and I want our home to be centered around Christ – and to live it as such – to treat others as we would have others treat us, to turn the other cheek, to be compassionate and loving toward others, to be peacemakers. When they’re grown and gone, I want them to remember our long talks, laughing, acceptance, cool evenings outside around an open fire with marshmallows and s’mores, warm evenings outside listening to the crickets and cicadas singing to us and sharing what went on in our day. And when they’re married and have their own children and are reading them a goodnight book, I want them to remember all the bedtime stories that we shared at the end of the day when they were small.

Sounds like a great lesson for all of us. I would love to be a part of the giveaway.
These book sounds amazing. Though my daughter is now in college, I’m still very intentional about the time we spend together and feel like every moment together should be memory forming….not in a “let’s go to Disney” way, but in a blessed, loving and enriching way. Thanks for the chance to win.
I’m all for getting any suggestions on slowing down. I think back to my grandparents lifestyle and how different it was, but so enriching.
What a wonderful giveaway. I would love to win this. Everyone needs to learn to slow down and enjoy life for each day we have it. As I’ve gotten older I am appreciating more and more about a normal day.
Love the book cover. I bet it is a great read.
Oh this sounds so great. I have lived this way for years now. Some of this has been by choice and some has been by circumstance. But, I really do believe that my family and our children have benefited by living a slower paced life. Of course, there were times when the children did not agree with me. I would love a chance to win a copy of this book. It looks like a great read.
I’m judging the book by its cover–it makes me feel good and I wanna read it!! Thanks Rhoda!
Oooh! This book sounds amazing! Please enter me, too!
I have taken up Crochet in the past couple of years- love the slow process of watching something come together!
Please enter me (: Love this
It sounds like just what our family would like to do. Thanks for the giveaway, Rhoda.
Wow. I feel calmer and slower just reading a description of the book. Count me in!
Oh yes, add me to the group! This sounds wonderful!
I think this book may have been written for ME!
Shannon Honeybloom’s quote really resonates with me……children today are so over-scheduled, and I feel as if I have to keep up. I long for the old days, when we could just go out the back door and play until the streetlights came on. Now playdates are scheduled, and only when X. or Y. doesn’t have a class or a game to play.
sigh
I would love to receive this book….it may bring me the confidence to relax…….thank you, Rhoda.
Wow, what a book, I would love to win this book. Thanks for sharing this with us.
Hugs,
Cindy
Oh, this sounds wonderful! Becoming a stay-at-home Mom a few months ago has made me look at my parenting AND my home in a whole new way. The home has definitely become more about raising our precious daughter and being a comfortable place for everday life since we spend sooo much more time here now. Making home simpler and a better place for my daughter to learn and grow sounds heavenly! So excited. I hope I’m one of the 3!
A good lesson in living … slow down and enjoy.
