Outdoor Curb Appeal: Lowes $100 Giveaway!

{GIVEAWAY IS CLOSED}

The winner is:  #262: Chelsea Duncan!

Our Lowe’s challenge this month was to spruce up an outdoor area and give it more curb appeal. I knew instantly what I would do and that is, change out these pitiful light fixtures. Lowes has some really nice ones for not a lot of money.

Lowes lights

I picked out these two beauties and they were $40 each. Not bad at all for adding that curb appeal.

007

This pretty little black lantern will go over the front door.

008

I got out the ladder and started taking down the old fixture. If you have been following my blog for awhile, you know that I am not afraid to tackle light fixtures and changed out every light fixture in my old house myself. It’s not hard once you get the hang of it. I’ll show you more on that below.

012

The old one came down.  YAY!

021

And the new one went up. Look how cute it looks with my glass front door!

022

It’s very simple and elegant with seeded glass.

Here’s are simple instructions on DIYing your own light fixtures.  Someone asked me this and YES, turn OFF the power to your lightswitch by turning off the breaker.  I will confess, that I sometimes just make sure the switch is in the OFF position on the wall and that stops the power from coming through too, but that is not the proper way to do it.  Do as I say, not as I do.  Be safe!

015

Here’s the back porch fixture. I thought I’d show you how easy it is to connect these. Black wire to black wire and white one to white. Wrap the copper ground wire around the little screw that is marked Ground. Screw the plate in and line up the bolts. 016

The base of the fixture has holes that the screws slide through and then the cap nut goes on top.

024

Much better, don’t you think?

025

Beautiful and simple Craftsman style fixture and now the porch will look SO much better. I can hardly wait to get on this porch to enjoy it all!

And Lowes is giving away to ONE of my readers a $100 giftcard to help you out with a project of your own!  What will you spend your giftcard on if you win?

Do you have an outdoor project you’d like to do soon?  Tell me in the comments and I’ll choose a winner in a few days!

Note:  I received a Lowes giftcard to complete my outdoor project.

I am in need of doorbells on the front and back door of my house but since both rooms are converted porches it will be a little trickey I think to find the doorbells I need for a sunroom and a sitting room. Oh yea and the one for the sunroom has to be battery powered.

If you get the QVC channel they had doorbells on there that you can put on the outside of any home and it has a speaker that you can put in any room and its little and portable so you can take it to what ever room your in to hear it ring. And they are battery powered. Just go to their website and look under… maybe electronics?? You can also just put in doorbells on the sites search bar. hope this helps some

If I should get a Lowe’s gift card, I would use it for new light fixture in my bathroom. Have had the ones in that was here when house was built over 15 years ago, think it is time for a change. thanks. Also I love watching you & your parents fix up your new house.

I am currently redecorating my sewing room – just finished taking down 30 year old wallpaper! I would replace the light fixture in that room if I got a Lowe’s gift card. I might put up track lighting so I can spotlight whatever area of the room I’m working in.

I am in need of a number of different things for this house, I am actually saving for new flooring for the living room and that is probably what I would use a Lowes gift card for. I absolutely love your blog and you have really given me some ideas and inspiration. Thank you.

Lowe’s makes me happy. If I should win, I’d love a new light fixture over my kitchen sink. I’d also like to make some concrete balls for in my perennial flower bed. Thanks, Rhoda, and love watching the progress on your new home. So happy for you.

If I had a gift card I would use on my front porch to purchase bead board for my ceiling. Right now it has ugly plywood. Thank you for showing us how easy it is to change out a light fixture! You Go Girl! I love, love, love watching your new house be transformed; it’s very inspiring. I recently lost my mother and I love seeing pictures of your sweet parents helping you with projects. You are very fortunate!

If I had a Lowes giftcard, I would buy the rustoleum cabinet transformations kit to update my 1980’s faux oak kitchen cabinets.

If I won the gift card I would do the same as you…change the outside light fixtures.
Mine are all crusty brassy looking & need updating.
    Thanks for the chance!

Your so smart! I like your light fixtures. The one over the front door matches your door so well. Both make a big improvement. Your doing great! Keep up the good work. I’m following along and know your new home will be a beautiful cozy place soon.

I have so many projects to do outdoors. I need to refresh my back screened in porch and outside deck–new paint, new light fixture, new outdoor rugs/cushions on the screened in porch.

What a difference those new fixtures make! Wow, everything is really shaping up in your new home. We could use some new pots to spiffy up the deck!

I’d really like to update our fixture by the garage door. I’d like something in a black finish.

The front porch fixture of my 1925 bungalow is just as sad as that old one over your front door. Minet is a ceiling fixture and needs to be replaced with a “tasteful” pendant. Being a single gal, I keep postponing this update because my budget covers the bulb but not much else!

Well, living in an older home there are lots of things that winning the gift card could go towards. I could choose from paint, lighting, stain, roofing, well the list goes on! Hope I win, but good luck to everyone else too!

Thanks for the opportunity to win…

I spiffed up my front porch last year and the only thing I didn’t do was replace my white light fixture. I would use the money for that, 2 new cute bird pillows that Lowes sells and a new doorbell. Yes, I could get all the for 100$! Love your new light fixture over the both doors and despite how easy you say it is to change out, I won’t go near electric wires.

i really like how well your door matches your new light fixture! let’s see…if i won the gift card i’d probably buy a few gallons of paint for my window shutters and garage door. not very exciting, but the previous owner chose the color and they are fading into a horrible shade of eggplanty-purple and something has to be done!

I would use our gift card towards a new door for my pantry and change out the fixtures on
Y cupbOards(the knobs). Thanks so much! Your blog is helping us gain some confidence to do some things ourselves. Thanks!
