Outdoor Curb Appeal: Lowes $100 Giveaway!

{GIVEAWAY IS CLOSED}

The winner is:  #262: Chelsea Duncan!

Our Lowe’s challenge this month was to spruce up an outdoor area and give it more curb appeal. I knew instantly what I would do and that is, change out these pitiful light fixtures. Lowes has some really nice ones for not a lot of money.

Lowes lights

I picked out these two beauties and they were $40 each. Not bad at all for adding that curb appeal.

007

This pretty little black lantern will go over the front door.

008

I got out the ladder and started taking down the old fixture. If you have been following my blog for awhile, you know that I am not afraid to tackle light fixtures and changed out every light fixture in my old house myself. It’s not hard once you get the hang of it. I’ll show you more on that below.

012

The old one came down.  YAY!

021

And the new one went up. Look how cute it looks with my glass front door!

022

It’s very simple and elegant with seeded glass.

Here’s are simple instructions on DIYing your own light fixtures.  Someone asked me this and YES, turn OFF the power to your lightswitch by turning off the breaker.  I will confess, that I sometimes just make sure the switch is in the OFF position on the wall and that stops the power from coming through too, but that is not the proper way to do it.  Do as I say, not as I do.  Be safe!

015

Here’s the back porch fixture. I thought I’d show you how easy it is to connect these. Black wire to black wire and white one to white. Wrap the copper ground wire around the little screw that is marked Ground. Screw the plate in and line up the bolts. 016

The base of the fixture has holes that the screws slide through and then the cap nut goes on top.

024

Much better, don’t you think?

025

Beautiful and simple Craftsman style fixture and now the porch will look SO much better. I can hardly wait to get on this porch to enjoy it all!

And Lowes is giving away to ONE of my readers a $100 giftcard to help you out with a project of your own!  What will you spend your giftcard on if you win?

Do you have an outdoor project you’d like to do soon?  Tell me in the comments and I’ll choose a winner in a few days!

Note:  I received a Lowes giftcard to complete my outdoor project.

I actually have 3 outdoor projects I am wanting to tackle.

#1 – I need to change out all of my brass light fixtures outside.
#2 – I want a new outdoor rug for my back deck.
#3 – My mom and I decided we needed to stain and score my front porch concrete. Very excited to do this one!

New light fixture for the back porch. The front got some new ones, but the poor back got none.

My dogs are great diggers. Too bad I’d rather not break an ankle. We’ll be leveling out the yard and redoing the brick walkway.

I had to smile when I read your post. Ugly lights drive me crazy! We had the ugliest fixtures over our front door and on our back patio. Every time I went through those doors, it would bug me. I finally got to replace those fixtures and I love the way they look. The amusing part is that I rarely think about those lights now that they are so pretty. Something that drove me nuts when it was ugly, now just blends into the background with all the other pretty stuff.
I always go through Lowe’s lighting section to see what’s new and I’ve been able to score unbelieveable buys! Their normal prices are great, and they have some killer sales. Our incredible entry fixture came from their markdown section at 75% OFF! Love that store and your blog for getting me to look for those king of bargains!
If I won that $100, I’d say goodbye to the screaming ugly 80’s light bar in our master bath. After your post, I’d do it myself and then I would never have to bug my husband about changing lights. I just know with a prettier fixture I’d look 20 years younger and thinner, the bathroom might look younger and thinner too!

I am about to become a stay at home mom. I love cooking and really want to expand my garden this year so we can eat more fresh, home grown foods. We have always used Lowe’s for our gardening supplies. $100 would buy at lot of veggies. And…maybe I would get another hydrangea shrub as well. 🙂

I would probably use a Lowe’s gift card to help spruce up my laundry room. I found some gorgeous vinyl flooring at Lowe’s that I would love to use.

Hi Rhoda, This time of year I love to spend time at Lowes garden center. The gift certificate would allow me to fill my pots with beautiful flowers. Thanks for the opportunity and I am enjoying following along as you remodel your new home.

Thank you very much for this ‘give a way’ chance – love Lowe’s, they are a regular fixture to our home needs here in Fresno, California. My kitchen window at the sink looking to the outdoors is in desperate need of a pretty light fixture; and would be the best improvement from the bare light bulb that it is now. Lowe’s gives you functional and pretty choices and I would be absolutely thrilled to be a winner and my kitchen window would shine. I follow your blog daily – (even more 🙂 so thank you very much and wish you continued blessings – say hi to your folks, they are wonderful. Cant wait to log on again to read what’s new on your end. With Love, Delores.

Lowes is my go to place for anything for the home or garden. We are in the process of making some raised flower beds. That is where my 100.00 would go.

Lowe’s is such a “woman-friendly” store…I love it! We’re getting ready to add some curb appeal to the front yard with new plantings, a walkway and of course, lighting. You’ve given me hope that I can tackle those coach lights myself! Great giveaway!

My house needs so much work… I would start with the bathroom that has been gutted and we have tiled it and put new sheet rock and still needs alot more done to it. Can always use help from Lowe’s. Would love a 100 gift card. Thanks for the giveaway.

Oooh, would love a $100 gift card to Lowe’s as we have a couple of outdoor fixtures that badly need replacing! Love the ones you chose, they would work great on our house too. I’m enjoying watching you fix up your home and am offering up prayers that all will go the way you want and it will be your haven.

My parents’ home is in desperate need of being updated- and since we’re visiting this summer, I’d like light fixtures that work in the extra bath!! 🙂
