Outdoor Curb Appeal: Lowes $100 Giveaway!

{GIVEAWAY IS CLOSED}

The winner is:  #262: Chelsea Duncan!

Our Lowe’s challenge this month was to spruce up an outdoor area and give it more curb appeal. I knew instantly what I would do and that is, change out these pitiful light fixtures. Lowes has some really nice ones for not a lot of money.

Lowes lights

I picked out these two beauties and they were $40 each. Not bad at all for adding that curb appeal.

007

This pretty little black lantern will go over the front door.

008

I got out the ladder and started taking down the old fixture. If you have been following my blog for awhile, you know that I am not afraid to tackle light fixtures and changed out every light fixture in my old house myself. It’s not hard once you get the hang of it. I’ll show you more on that below.

012

The old one came down.  YAY!

021

And the new one went up. Look how cute it looks with my glass front door!

022

It’s very simple and elegant with seeded glass.

Here’s are simple instructions on DIYing your own light fixtures.  Someone asked me this and YES, turn OFF the power to your lightswitch by turning off the breaker.  I will confess, that I sometimes just make sure the switch is in the OFF position on the wall and that stops the power from coming through too, but that is not the proper way to do it.  Do as I say, not as I do.  Be safe!

015

Here’s the back porch fixture. I thought I’d show you how easy it is to connect these. Black wire to black wire and white one to white. Wrap the copper ground wire around the little screw that is marked Ground. Screw the plate in and line up the bolts. 016

The base of the fixture has holes that the screws slide through and then the cap nut goes on top.

024

Much better, don’t you think?

025

Beautiful and simple Craftsman style fixture and now the porch will look SO much better. I can hardly wait to get on this porch to enjoy it all!

And Lowes is giving away to ONE of my readers a $100 giftcard to help you out with a project of your own!  What will you spend your giftcard on if you win?

Do you have an outdoor project you’d like to do soon?  Tell me in the comments and I’ll choose a winner in a few days!

Note:  I received a Lowes giftcard to complete my outdoor project.

I need to paint the entire interior of my home. This dear house survived having six children raised in it, but it’s beginning to show all that loving wear and tear!

    Hi,

I am re-doing my daughter’s bedroom using the fabulous stencil you used in your sister’s bedroom. She is moving home afte college until she finds a job. I’m doing light blue walls with a silvery paint for the stencil. Her current bedroom overhead light is really ugly and I would buy a small chandelier for her bedroom.

    Thanks,
    Daryl

Three words…Mulch, Mulch, Mulch…anything possibly left over could go toward flowers! I need to do a major spruce up around here!

Love your new lighting, Rhoda! Thanks so much for the chance to win!!

Next month we are remodling our one and only bathroom in our small home. We have a few things already, but this would help complete our project.

Those look fantastic! The one over the front door looks like it was made to go with that door. We’re working on sprucing up the yard of our rental home. It’s tough because we don’t want to spend a lot, but we want to enjoy it while we’re here. It’s hard to choose what to spend the money on when you know you’ll leave it in a few years when the military sends us to our next ‘home’, but we really enjoy being outside and want to enjoy our time here as well. This gift card would certainly help!

Love the new fixtures! They really do make a difference. I need to do some painting, but I dread it because it intimidates me. Wish I lived in your area so I could come help and maybe learn some tips.

I have a long list of projects, but at the top of the list is replacing the tub and shower in my bathroom. I love seeing your
updates on your new home! I would be so overwhelmed, but you make it look simple!

I too, would love new outdoor fixtures!! I replaced my light bulbs with new energy efficient ones because I was changing them so much. Now none of the old covers fit over the new bulbs…. but I have yet to replace another bulb 🙂

I would replace the carpet on our deck if I won the gift card. Its not in the best condition and needs to be installed the right way! 🙂

P.S. I’m enjoying your house renovation posts! I would love to one day purchase a fixer-upper and, well, fix it up! 🙂

Boy I could use it to get paint to finish my kitchen, or an outdoor fan for my front porch.

I love the back porch fixture.. so cape cod-y. If I had a gift card I would buy a new kitchen faucet. I want a new one, but I am too stingy to justify it right now.

    Thanks for the giveaway!

I love both of those fixtures! My yard is in need of a serious spruce up! We get a lot of sun and need drought tolerant plants. My outdoor furniture could use a good coat of spray paint as well. I’d like to try the Valspar spray paint for outdoors.
