Outdoor Curb Appeal: Lowes $100 Giveaway!

{GIVEAWAY IS CLOSED}

The winner is:  #262: Chelsea Duncan!

Our Lowe’s challenge this month was to spruce up an outdoor area and give it more curb appeal. I knew instantly what I would do and that is, change out these pitiful light fixtures. Lowes has some really nice ones for not a lot of money.

Lowes lights

I picked out these two beauties and they were $40 each. Not bad at all for adding that curb appeal.

007

This pretty little black lantern will go over the front door.

008

I got out the ladder and started taking down the old fixture. If you have been following my blog for awhile, you know that I am not afraid to tackle light fixtures and changed out every light fixture in my old house myself. It’s not hard once you get the hang of it. I’ll show you more on that below.

012

The old one came down.  YAY!

021

And the new one went up. Look how cute it looks with my glass front door!

022

It’s very simple and elegant with seeded glass.

Here’s are simple instructions on DIYing your own light fixtures.  Someone asked me this and YES, turn OFF the power to your lightswitch by turning off the breaker.  I will confess, that I sometimes just make sure the switch is in the OFF position on the wall and that stops the power from coming through too, but that is not the proper way to do it.  Do as I say, not as I do.  Be safe!

015

Here’s the back porch fixture. I thought I’d show you how easy it is to connect these. Black wire to black wire and white one to white. Wrap the copper ground wire around the little screw that is marked Ground. Screw the plate in and line up the bolts. 016

The base of the fixture has holes that the screws slide through and then the cap nut goes on top.

024

Much better, don’t you think?

025

Beautiful and simple Craftsman style fixture and now the porch will look SO much better. I can hardly wait to get on this porch to enjoy it all!

And Lowes is giving away to ONE of my readers a $100 giftcard to help you out with a project of your own!  What will you spend your giftcard on if you win?

Do you have an outdoor project you’d like to do soon?  Tell me in the comments and I’ll choose a winner in a few days!

Note:  I received a Lowes giftcard to complete my outdoor project.

Bathroom faucets…have my eye on one at Lowe’s for a good while. A light fixture for the porch would work, too. Too many projects to decide on just one!!

$100…yeah!!! We have been house hunting non stop (currently living in in-laws home as ours sold) (don’t ask…) Based on the condition on nearly ALL the houses in the range we want to spend, I could use it on just about anything..They ALL look like a bomb went off in them, LOL

I have the same light fixture beside my front door and LOVE it! We are currently working on stripping and re-satining our deck. I cannot wait to have some friends over and sit outside! I Love Lowes!

I love the light fixtures you chose and think they look great installed. Your house already has so much charm! If I had a $100 to spend at Lowes I would select a new light fixture for my kitchen or tile for a backsplash in the kitchen. Jumping on my kitchen upgrade is one of the things on my Summer to-do list.

I would change the lighting in front of my garage. It has three lantern type fixtures up now, but they require the candelabra type bulbs so they don’t give a lot of light! I’d love to win!! Thanks for the opportunity to win!

I love your choices, as usual, grin.
Lanterns are timeless, don’t you agree?
I would love to have a gift card – have
been wanting a new light fixture in my
hall wash room that opens out for all
    to see!

Looking great – so HAPPY for you.

My husband just put up a list of things he wants to be able to do to help remodel or update our place. We need to get some lighting fixtures for one of the bathrooms. We need a new toilet for our bathroom. We also need paint for the bathroom (as the wallpaper is coming off). We are also looking for a new frig. (so many things that need to be taken care of ).

If I should win the Lowes gift card, I wouldn’t have a problem finding a use for it. Replacing vinyl flooring in the laundry room with tile, redoing the stairs, like you did. Thank You!! for the chance to complete these projects.

We need to stain our deck and then want to add some fun summer accessories, plants, and a rug. That is where we could use a $100 gift card!!

Here is Arizona it is so necessary to have ceiling fans…..we’ve already had a 105 degree day! I am redoing my bedroom and a new white ceiling fan to go with the new shabby chic decor would be lovely. Thanks for the giveaway…..Lowe’s is my favorite place to shop.

So pretty Rhoda! I would love to replace our front porch fixtures to something a bit more ornate. The ones we have came with the house and are builders’ blah. Thanks!

I have a very small bathroom that I would like to update. The light fixture just isn’t doing it for me. I would love to be able to change it out. Also, because the room is so small, it is totally feasible to change the ceramic tile as well. Only thing holding me back is the budget. I can dream and in the meantime, I am enjoying seeing your work in progress.

Dear Rhoda…I have been admiring your beautiful blog for a long time now…Your giving heart and appreciation for your parents and their willingness to help you is admired greatly…You are teaching each one of us to “carry on” when the path is rough..I would use the gift card to help my elderly parents to put a grab bar in their tub and replace the 40 year light fixture in their bathroom..I love them both so very much and they have sacrificed to do without always!!! God Bless You and your Parents…and may your new home be a treasure always!!!
