Have you sat down and pondered the furniture you bring into your home and have you wondered exactly which pieces you should be looking for that are both stylish and useful. Those pieces that can move from apartment to house, working in each space equally well?
Mother/daughter duo, Suzanne and Lauren McGrath have a background in interior design and fashion design. Mom, Suzanne hails from Martha Stewart Living as Style Editor and Producer and daughter, Lauren, spent time at Teen Vogue, where where she worked in the fashion features department. Their philosophy is that the right combination of pieces can flow through a home, moving from room to room and still working well for years down the road.
Making a house a home is a lifelong pursuit, but this team has written a fun new book to help the process. Good Bones, Great Pieces is chock full of beautiful photography, rooms designed by interior designer, Suzanne, along with beautiful and stylish rooms from many top designers out there today.
Written from personal experience and a lifelong love of buying thriftstore treasures, as well as new pieces, they have compiled those top 7 pieces of furniture that can be so beneficial in building those good bones of a home we are all pursuing.
Suzanne and Lauren also blog at Good Bones, Great Pieces and share inspiring stories of designing and decorating spaces. I was fortunate to get a copy of my very own to add to my decorating book arsenal and I loved reading through this book and seeing all the great ideas.
What are those 7 pieces?
I’ll give you a couple of them and psst, they are all listed on the blog linked above. Most of these pieces you probably already have in your home too, but this book will give you some fresh new ideas on how to incorporate them in a little different way than you might have thought of before.
I had to stop and think about it, but I do believe I have all 7 pieces in my collection too.
Demilune from Ballard Designs
Loveseat from Amazon
Occasional chair from Overstock
From loveseats, to occasional chairs, to side tables, these 7 pieces are workhorses in the home. Move them, paint them, reupholster them and love them. That’s the message I got from Good Bones, Great Pieces.
The great news is that I got an extra copy to give away to one of my readers, so leave a comment for a chance to win ONE copy of Good Bones, Great Pieces for yourself!
What is your favorite “workhorse” piece of furniture in your house that you just can’t live without?
I’d have to say mine is the antique French buffet piece I had in my old kitchen. That piece has served as clothes storage, a breakfast buffet, and a TV entertainment center. I’d say that is quite the workhorse. It is going to end up in my den this time around holding the TV.
So, leave a comment and I’ll choose a winner in a few days!
You can also order the book at the links listed here at Good Bones, Great Pieces.
NOTE: I received a free copy of the book and one to give away to one of my readers.

Amazing pieces, this book has definitely jumped to the top of my must read list 🙂
I have a couple of the pieces also, and would love a copy of the book.
This looks like a great book! I would love to have a little inspiration on the coffee table.
Not sure but my last comment here may not have posted. I’m not trying to cheat and enter twice.
Rhoda – I love to reuse and repurpose items. Mirrors are a good example and an be used for years in different rooms. I would love to have their book for inspiration. I need ideas on redecorating my dining room using my husband’s parents furniture.

I would love to be chosen to receive this book for inspiration! Enjoy your blog with my morning coffee every day. Thank you!
My “coffee table” is the piece I couldn’t do without. It’s actually a battered (cosmetically) chest that doubles as extra seating, but also provides storage for throws, blankets, table cloths, etc. When you have a small house, multifunctional pieces are a must!
I am redoing almost every room in my house, kind of a style change going on with me. I would LOOOOVE a copy of this book. I think I have a few pieces of the must haves already but would love the book to help me out!
Dawn
My piece is a white wicker sofa table with a glass top. It began behind the sofa, but has been a bar, a hall table and a buffet server. Would love to have a copy of the book! 🙂
ohhhhhhhhhhh That book looks amazing!!! I would love, love to win it!! Sounds like a perfect read for the beach!!
I would love this book. We just moved into a new home and I am in the process of decorating it and this would be so wonderful to be able to read through and use!
Rhoda,
I have several pieces that have moved/lived with me for over 35 years…a blanket chest/coffee table/bench that was my grandmothers would be my all time favorite:)
My piece is a book shelf…it has been in almost every room with multiple things on it…it now lives in my sunroom and holds craft supplies. I would love a copy of the book to help me find those great pieces that just need a little love. I love your blog!!
Doing some redo projects now. Would love to have book to get some more ideas
My piece is an armoire that went from tv cabinet/sweater storage in the master bedroom to shoe closet in the mudroom.
I would love to win this.
I have a framed piece of word art that was my great-grandmother’s. She was just a simple women from West Virginia who had great style. This picture amazes me because they didn’t have much money yet the art is from a NY art book. I’ve come to wonder about where she would have gotten this from. My grandmother-her daughter-doesn’t seem to know but wanted it passed down to me. It hangs in my kitchen as a reminder of what’s the most important- God, Family, Love. I would love the book!
I have a family heirloom sideboard that I received about 15 years ago. I used it in the dining room for years – then needed a table for the foyer and placed it there. Love it! I would love to have the book! Thanks!
Rhoda,
Yes, please put my name in the hat for a chance to win this lovely book. It would go front and center on my coffee table. I’m soaking up so much new knowledge from reading your blog and this book would certainly inspire me further.

Right now, I would have to say my kids’ armoire. It holds clothes (theirs & mine), toys, books, you name it & it holds it! We are reno-ing right now so once the kids get their own rooms with large closets, the armoire will hold a TV.
I have a chest that I have moved from the bedroom to the living room to hold the TV. It is currently in my office holding supplies. I don’t know if that makes it a workhorse, but it’s come in handy!
I would love a copy of the book. It’s always good to know you’re getting something that will last beyond your current set-up when you’re investing in something as expensive as furniture.
My most useful piece has turned out to be something I got maybe a year ago at an antique store. It is an odd-sized table that has been very versatile. It is long enough to serve as a buffet table, and low enough to be a sofa table. It has sat in my bay window as a display table (which the cats also loved). It is now in the basement, again as a display table and will probably be used as a buffet table again since this is where the football game parties are held.
