{Giveaway is Closed}

The Winner is:  #134 – Elizabeth!

Have you sat down and pondered the furniture you bring into your home and have you wondered exactly which pieces you should be looking for that are both stylish and useful.  Those pieces that can move from apartment to house, working in each space equally well?

Mother/daughter duo, Suzanne and Lauren McGrath have a background in interior design and fashion design.  Mom, Suzanne hails from Martha Stewart Living as Style Editor and Producer and daughter, Lauren, spent time at Teen Vogue, where where she worked in the fashion features department.  Their philosophy is that the right combination of pieces can flow through a home, moving from room to room and still working well for years down the road.

good bones great pieces

Making a house a home is a lifelong pursuit, but this team has written a fun new book to help the process.  Good Bones, Great Pieces is chock full of beautiful photography, rooms designed by interior designer, Suzanne, along with beautiful and stylish rooms from many top designers out there today.

Written from personal experience and a lifelong love of buying thriftstore treasures, as well as new pieces, they have compiled those top 7 pieces of furniture that can be so beneficial in building those good bones of a home we are all pursuing.

Suzanne and Lauren also blog at Good Bones, Great Pieces and share inspiring stories of designing and decorating spaces.  I was fortunate to get a copy of my very own to add to my decorating book arsenal and I loved reading through this book and seeing all the great ideas.

What are those 7 pieces?

I’ll give you a couple of them and psst, they are all listed on the blog linked above.  Most of these pieces you probably already have in your home too, but this book will give you some fresh new ideas on how to incorporate them in a little different way than you might have thought of before.

I had to stop and think about it, but I do believe I have all 7 pieces in my collection too.

From loveseats, to occasional chairs, to side tables, these 7 pieces are workhorses in the home.  Move them, paint them, reupholster them and love them.  That’s the message I got from Good Bones, Great Pieces.

The great news is that I got an extra copy to give away to one of my readers, so leave a comment for a chance to win ONE copy of Good Bones, Great Pieces for yourself!

What is your favorite “workhorse” piece of furniture in your house that you just can’t live without?

I’d have to say mine is the antique French buffet piece I had in my old kitchen. That piece has served as clothes storage, a breakfast buffet, and a TV entertainment center.  I’d say that is quite the workhorse.  It is going to end up in my den this time around holding the TV.

So, leave a comment and I’ll choose a winner in a few days!

You can also order the book at the links listed here at Good Bones, Great Pieces.

NOTE:  I received a free copy of the book and one to give away to one of my readers.

I have to say my bed. It’s the only thing I own.

I was handed down a console table from my mother-in-law that has proved to be a versatile piece, filling in as tv stand, entry table and sofa table at various times.

I would love this book! My best piece of furniture is an old farmhouse sideboard that I bought from a barn sale years ago. It is currently in my dining room holding all my off-season decor. I use the top for display space and the piece was already banged-up when I got it so I never have to worry about my little boys messing it up- all of their dents and scratches just give it more character!

The workhorse piece in my house is my Shaker style desk. Funny how life has evolved. I did not often use a desk in the past, but now that I spend lots of time on my laptop reading blogs, checking Pinterest and email, and, yes, working, I spend lots more time at my desk. It helps that I have a gorgeous view from my perch here.

I have a great oak washstand which can be used in many ways. It has a nice old marble top. Right now it is in my living room and serves as a bar.

The book sounds very interesting, would love to read it.

My favorite “workhouse” piece are always dressers/buffets. I really find they’re interchangeable.

My workhorse is a 4 shelf cabinet I rescued from my parents basement. The glass door was broken before I took it. To keep little hands out of it we used chicken wire in the door. In the den it held books and knick knacks, moving to the kitchen it held my watermelon collection, then Beanie Babies in the kids room, next a time as a bathroom linen closet and now back in the kitchen holding ironstone! Oh, how I would love this book!

Love this topic! It’s like the basics in one’s wardrobe and then build from there. Great stuff 🙂

My workhorse piece is also a great french buffet I got an estate sale in TN. I have used it all over my home. It now resides in our living room holding a television. It is one of the few pieces I never had to do a thing too, I cleaned it and it has stayed the same for years! Very unusual in my home!!! 🙂

I love the old china cabinet my husband’s grandmother gave us. It adds so much character to my dining room.

One of my favorite and most versatile pieces is an antique English china cabinet. Depending on the room I have placed it in, it can go formal (full of my fine china, silver, and crystal), or informal (holding my colorful Italian pottery or ironstone). It’s also the first piece that my husband and I bought together just after being married, and we still love it 25 years later!

I’d love a copy of this book!! I think my favorite workhorse in our house is a 1970s buffet that I have re-done and sometimes it’s a TVstand, sometimes a buffet, etc.

The “Good Bones” book looks amazing! I can’t wait to learn who the lucky winner will be! My favorite “workhorse” piece of furniture would be our antique English pub table. I have used it for a dining room table, a craft/puzzle table, a desk, and currently it is a Thomas the Train table. BTW, I love the orange loveseat photo you posted – We need something like that in our UT Volunteer room ;>)

This book sounds like one I need to read. I have been struggling lately with finding pieces that I will want for the long haul, things that aren’t too trendy but not boring. I would love to win the book!
