Decorating Blues

Speaking of blue from earlier this week, how do you feel about it? I have to say, blue has never been my go-to color for decorating, but I’m learning to like it more and more.

The February issue of House Beautiful is dedicated to all things blue.  Blue rooms, blue paint, blue accessories.  And it was pretty fun to flip through and see all the shades of blue that are out there.

Little Rock, AR designer, Tobi Fairly is prominently highlighted in this issue with a fabulous house that she designed with a lot of blue.  Don’t those lamps just jump out at you in a really good way?  I love that subtle damask backdrop too, maybe wallpaper.  Such a pretty entryway.

From the same house, this is the livingroom, which just exudes happiness with all the blue.  You can’t see the rug pattern very well, but it’s a blue and white design that is so pretty.  It’s amazing to see all the shades of blue in this room, but they really do work together.  Tobi is a fabulous designer, in my book.

Doesn’t this room (above) just make you smile? This is a beachouse in Southampton, NY.   Reminds me so much of the seafoam green I had in my house back in 1985. Only back then, we were pairing this green with mauve.  Yuck!  No more mauve for me. How about those crisp white sofas?

From the same beach house, this is one of the bedrooms.  Very fun, don’t you think?

How vivid the blue is against the crisp white cabinets in this kitchen?

What a delightful kitchen this is.  I adore those blue painted backs in the cabinets.  Wouldn’t that be fun to wake up to every morning?

Feb 1950 Mrs. Wright Richardson

(all photos:  House Beautiful)

Also in this issue, there are 50 blue fabrics and 70 years  of blue rooms, like the one above from Mrs. Wright, decorated in the 50’s.  So, this goes to show that blue has been around for a lot of years and is not likely to ebb anytime soon.  I think that room looks pretty classic and stylish.

How about you?  Do you like blue? If so, which shades turn you on the most?

I’d have to say, I’m loving the lighter, aqua-turquoise-y blues the best right now.

I am not really fond of blue, but I did do the dining room in blue…hmmmm:-).

Some of these rooms remind me of rooms from the 1950’s. I remember seeing a sort of turquoise, used with hot pinks, during those years.

I love blues. theses are dreamy shades. My dining and kitchen are a light sea blue. I was inspired by the color of the ocean while visiting St. Marteen. That was years ago and I am still loving it.
    Blessings!

I don’t have any blue in my home right now, but I’m loving some of the blues that are out (slightly infatuated with turquoise :-)) I enjoyed seeing all of the blue designs in my House Beautiful magazine too!

I LOVE blue. In fact, most of my house is decorated with different shades of blue. I’ve used shades of blue, white, and brown, and it’s so soothing to me.

I have my HB magazine right here on my coffee table, but I’ve yet to find time to flip through it. Maybe tonight’s the night!

Rhoda, I love blue!! I have always had some shade of blue in my home. I have for the last 5 years been in love with turquoise, still my favorite! I am currently remodeling our home and blue-gray paint is going through out our home in various shades. I like to pair it with the whites, creams and pops of turquoise, red and pink. I don’t ever think I can get tired of blue…just pick another shade. lol

    Have a wonderful week!

Oh how I love blue. It makes my heart sing! I have it in several rooms in my home. My favorite shades are on the lighter side, such as robin’s egg, turquoise, sea. But for me I just adore blue. I just finished painting my powder room in a darker blue and a modren grayish blue (replacing a muted green) in my family room and I could not be happier.

Beautiful photos, especially the foyer one. Not too much…just right. I don’t use much blue in our home (Tuscan style), but a touch of it here and there can really brighten things up.

    Hugs!

I am more of a green person, but I am liking the gray blues. I like the blues you have in your home.

I so want to do my guest bedroom in blues. My inspiration comes from a pair of candlesticks I picked up in Ireland a few years back. They’re sitting on my shelf, begging to be the inspiration for a beautiful blue room. Thanks for sharing!

It would be hard to find any color more soothing than blue and it’s always been a color that my husband and I could live with together. Don’t see myself ever giving it up completely.

I’m a daily on your blog. Thanks for the entertainment you provide and all the good decorating advice.

Hi Rhoda, I am a blue girl and always have been. I have had a blue master bdrm for more years than I want to admit. You have seen my master so you know exactly what I am talking about. I have guest room that is all vanilla walls with white comforter with very, very soft blue sheets and the ceiling is the same shade of blue. My office is the muddy tone of turqouise. I use to have a blue and white ticking sofa which I plan on getting again so like I said I LOVE BLUE. You know I put it with my other favorite GREEN!! Hugs Kathysue

I’m “warming up” to blue, I especially am loving the navy I have in the master bedroom. With white and khaki it looks so fresh and clean.

I loved that House Beautiful issue, especially that fab beach house!

    Rhoda,
Not really a fan of blue…love the living room with white sofas in a beach house, just looks like summer. I love grey blues and greens. Love looking at the pictures just not for me…..although the blues and browns out there look nice too.
    Hugs,
    Donna

Loving the robin’s egg shades, but really I just love blue. In fact, its my oldest daughter’s middle name, so that should really tell you something.

Blue wouldn’t be my “go to” color either, Rhoda! Although, I do have a blue spare bedroom that is the color of that living room picture {second pic}. I do like the grayed blues and robins egg blue, but I think I’m more a blue in accessories kind of girl.

I’m not a fan of blue either. But this spring I think that it is starting to grow on me. I even blogged about it yesterday.
