We have been pretty busy lately with helping take care of family and also trying to get to house stuff. There’s always something to do when you own a house, isn’t there? I haven’t shared this on the blog either, but after Mother’s Day mom started having some severe back pains. She’s had arthritis in her back for years, so it’s just gotten worse recently. We are trying to get her some help so that’s been at the forefront of my life at the moment. My sister is coming home this week to help with that too. Life with 90 year old parents is ever changing and we are learning as we go. I’ll keep you posted later, but for now we are trying to get her stable and out of pain.
Another big thing going on right now is I’m getting ready to sell my rental house. I’ll be sharing that with you too, but right now we are starting to get it spiffed up to sell. I’ll be painting a fresh coat of paint on some of the rooms inside and getting the outside ready to go so stay tuned for that later. I had the exterior painted last year. I’ll share all the details. As you can see, there is a lot going on in our world.
I’ve got a few things going on around the house that I thought I’d share with you. I’m not sure when I’ll get this project finished, but I hope to get started on it soon. I’m about to do a guest room refresh and do some fun new things in there. I never really planned to do this room over again, but I fell in love with a bed. I’ll show you that too. So the plans all stemmed from this bed.
I’ve had the current furniture, the sleigh bed and nightstands for over 20 years. They have served me well, but I am ready to let the bed go for sure. Not sure yet about the nightstands. We’ll see what happens as I move along. The bed went in the guest room as a default. It made sense to do that when Mark and I got married and wanted to buy new furniture for our room. The King bed is really too big for this room. Not much else fits in here, so I’m downsizing to a Queen to give a little more room in here.
The room is big enough for a bed, 2 nightstands and one other piece of furniture.
I have this pretty Thomasville chest of drawers that I bought in Birmingham and have had well over 10 years. Bought it at an antique store, so it’s vintage. I may sell this piece because I still have another large French armoire that has been at my old house that I’m planning to bring over here when I redo the room.
As I mentioned, I’m getting ready to put my old house on the market and I’ll share that with you as I get that process going. I plan to get it ready to sell sometime in June. Mark’s daughter, Traci and her family have been renting from me and they just bought another house of their own, so it’s perfect timing in this hot market we are in to sell my old house. So that means, furniture turn over is in order. I had left the old French armoire that was in my old bedroom and they used it, but now I have to move it. So I’d rather keep it than this chest I think. It’s still a beautiful piece and will look pretty with the new bed.
These nightstands are vintage too and I’ve had them well over 20 years. I’m sure I won’t get close to what these cost back then, but I will either keep them and maybe paint them, or sell them. I haven’t decided on that yet. They are petite and very cute, with a door and 3 drawers behind it. We will see what I decide when the time comes. I hate to buy something brand new so I might look for something else vintage that better fits my look in here. We will see!
Want to see my new plan?
So here’s part of my plan! See that gorgeous bed up there? I fell in love with it when I saw it at the HGTV Dream Home last year.
It was love at first sight when I saw this bed, but I didn’t really think I’d get one. I never got it out of my mind since then and decided why not make some changes in the guest room and get this bed in there. since I’d rather have a bit more room in that space. I love it! I bought it, it’s not sponsored at all, but I tracked down the maker as Tommy Bahama and figured why not do it? It’s not inexpensive, but I’m really going to love having it in our home.
I won’t be changing everything in here, but adding to what I already have and freshening things up a lot. I’m going to be adding that pretty blue and white wallpaper on the bed wall and I love it. It’s from Roommates called Hygge Fern. I’ll be adding some new bedding and pillows shams, sheets, etc. I may keep the lamps, I still like those too. And not sure yet what I’m doing with the curtains in there but I may or may not keep the green stripe. I have a couple of options on those already that I’ll decide on.
So that’s my plan for the guest room! It’s subject to change a bit as I move along, but this is the main plan. I’m keeping the Dash and Albert Fisher rug (affiliate link) and still love it. That green pillow is from a company I’ve worked with on Instagram, The Inside (affiliate link) and it will be making an appearance in here too. It’s a neat company with lots of great items and fabrics.
I thought you might enjoy this peek in to my planning and creative process when I decide to do over a room. I hardly ever start completely from scratch and won’t this time either, but the bed is definitely my jumping off spot. I just love it! I’m not sure how long it will be before I get this done. The bed might not even be in for a few more weeks, but I’ll be sure and share when I get it done. I’ve got a couple of spaces that I’m changing up, including my office, but both of them might be slow going as the summer unfolds. We don’t always do things fast around here!
I love that bed! Remember it from HGTV Dream Home. Cannot wait to see your room refresh.
So sorry to hear about your sweet Mom. Hope she will get more comfortable with her pain. I always Love hearing about your Mom and Dad….. also your house!
Sending prayers for pain relief for your sweet Mama. I am so sorry that she is suffering right now.
Prayers for your sweet, sweet mom. I surely hate knowing she’s in pain. I know you will find the right remedy for her. Your new room will be gorgeous. That bed!!! I can’t even….
I love that bed too — In fact, I recently ordered the headboard from Wayfair for our bedroom. It looks great in the room. It’s got presence but doesn’t take up too much room visually. I think it will look great with the wallpaper you’ve picked out. I love the rug you’re planning to use. Everything has a real coastal vibe.
Rhoda, prayers for your sweet mama. I have a 90 year old mother and two precious sisters who live near by and do most of her care giving. She still lives alone too with help. Like you said, it is hard and we just take one day at a time. Your house will sell in no time…it is so cute. Love the new bed. We are moving this week to a one story patio home and I am looking forward to moving some things around and freshening up. Dont want to be accused of granny style.lol
Hope your mom gets some relief soon. My husband fell and broke a vertebra in his back. Until it is repaired he is in a lot of pain.
Sleigh beds take up a lot of real estate. Just getting a different style will make a world of difference. Most newer nigh stands are very wide. I love them but your have to have large rooms to make them work. My guest rooms are smaller than I’d like and the bedroom with a queen size bed only can fit one night stand. Good luck with all the changes looking forward to updates.
Prayers for your precious mom. I love your rental house. Would love to buy it, the draw back for us it backs up to Kennesaw Due West Road. It is a hot real estate market right now. You will get multiple offers the first day it goes on the market.
Thank you Susan, that’s the plan!
Oh wow Rhoda. The room is going to be fantastic. Love that bed, the wallpaper, the rug… just everything.
So sorry to hear about your sweet Mom. I hope and pray that she gets relief soon.
My 90 year old mother has been suffering with back pain for a year. Please post what they do for your sweet mom as my mother has arthritis too. Prayers for your mom – your dad too.
Prayers for your Mom! She did look so cute in the pic you shared on Mother’s Day! I just hope she gets some relief soon. You’ve got some great decor ideas here – can’t wait to see the progress!!
Hi Rhoda, loving the direction your going with the guest room. Please tell your precious mother her fan club is wishing a speedy recovery. We love your parents.
Love, Love , Love that bed! Wonder if you could strip and bleach those night stands to better blend with the finish of the bed? With the vintage armoire and wallpaper, I think they would fit very well into a ‘collected over time’, British Colonial feel!
Hope you all are able to to help your mom find some comfort and relief, and that she starts to feel better soon! Pain is tricky… the one thing I remember from my days working in hospice was that it’s much better to stay ahead of it.. pain breeds pain. Hugs and prayers as you navigate her care!
Thank you, Erin, appreciate that. I am not sure about stripping down the nightstands. They are pretty dark so I don’t know how they will look. I’ll probably wait until the bed comes in and then decide.
Praying for your mom, pain is so hard to deal with. Question for you – on your design board for the bedroom, can you source the bedding shown on the bed?? Love that! It’s been a tough week – month – years around here and I desperately need a pick me up and that bedding is so charming. Pray for us in Lake Charles, Rhoda. The devastation from hurricanes and floods is critical. This city is dying and my heart is broken.
I am wowed by the Dream Home bedroom! Furniture and colors! I love your old dresser too. I have several pieces of vintage mahogany like that. I love it. My grandma had a buffet in that style, and when we divided up her furniture 40 some years ago, I wanted it so badly, but had no room for it, and no one had room to store it for me. I think it went for about $50 and it was in perfect condition. She used to have me polish it for her. I never forgot it. Finally about 15 years ago I found a buffet similar and bought it. It sits in my entryway and is beautiful.
Your poor Mom. I realize everybody is different, but my mom in her early 90’s had severe back pain, and was sent to a pain center associated with the hospital. Injection into back, and she was wonderfully pain free in a couple of days. She is 99 now and had it done once more, and is still working. Bless your Mom and good luck.
Wow that new bed is wonderful! I can just imagine it with the wallpaper too! I am sorry your mom is going through all this pain. I wonder if a brace would help her? Arthritis is cruel.
