My favorite chocolate chip cookie recipe dates back at least 25 years ago and supposedly the origin of this delicious cookie was Mrs. Fields, who had stores here in Atlanta for a long time. She is still in business with expanded franchises, but after looking her up online, I’ve read that she says that the chocolate chip cookie chain letter that many of us came across back in the late 80’s was in fact, not her recipe. Well, no matter where this delicious recipe originated from, I’ve been baking these cookies since the first time I came across the recipe and it remains my favorite today.
So, I’m going to share it with all of you in case you missed it back then.
Gather all the ingredients. This recipe has lots of ground up oatmeal, which makes it sorta healthy, right?  Ok, so that’s a stretch.
Mix the dry ingredients and the wet ingredients separately, then mix together.
Here’s the consistency of the dough. This is good stuff!
Pinch and plop on a baking pan.
Not a great pic, but they spread out nice and chunky.
Cooling down on tin foil. You don’t want to bake these long, about 12 or so minutes, no more than 15 depending on your oven. They come out still soft and then harden up a bit, but are still a bit chewy inside.
Just the way I like ‘em! Chocolate chips and pecans, they are a great combination of flavors. Since I found this recipe, I’ve stuck with it and when I made them again recently, enjoyed the taste all over again.

Homemade Chocolate Chip Cookies
Ingredients
- Wet Ingredients:
- 1 cup butter
- 1 cup sugar
- 1 cup brown sugar
- 2 eggs
- 1 tsp. vanilla
- Dry Ingredients:
- 2 cups all purpose flour
- 2 1/2 cups oatmeal blended in food processor until powder like
- 1/2 tsp. salt
- 1 tsp. baking powder
- 1 tsp baking soda
- One 12 oz. bag chocolate chips
- 1 cup chopped pecans
Instructions
-
Cream together the butter, sugar and brown sugar by hand. Add the eggs and vanilla. In another bowl, combine flour, ground oatmeal, salt, baking powder and soda.
-
Combine the wet and dry ingredients together until well mixed. Add 12 oz. bag of chocolate chips (your preference) and 1 cup chopped pecans. Bake on ungreased cookie sheet or stone. Use large spoon for rounded drops. My baking stone holds 12 cookies at a time. This recipe makes approximately 4 dozen cookies.
-
Bake at 375* for 12 to 15 minutes just until lightly brown. Remove and let cool. Cookies will harden up, but stay chewy inside.
How about you, do you have a fave chocolate chip cookie recipe and is it a lot different than this one?
I’ve added a new style guide to Ebay, all about decorating with pumpkins, so would love for you to stop over! Just click the pic below.
I have the same recipe, Rhoda! I always heard that a shopper who was lunching at Neiman Marcus cafe had one of these cookies for dessert. She was so impressed that she asked for the recipe and was told that she could purchase the recipe for “two fifty.” She assumed that meant $2.50 and agreed to buy the recipe, only to learn when she received her bill that she’d been charged $250.00! At that she decided that the recipe was hers to share freely and sent it to all her friends and family. They each shared it with their friends and family and so on. . . .
I have no idea if all that is true, but it makes a great story, doesn’t it? And the cookies really are wonderful!
Hope you’re having a great week!
From what I read on the Mrs. Fields site, none of those stories are true. I heard that one too! so funny, but they sure are good cookies.
I have this recipe too. I have heard both versions…Mrs. Field and Neiman Marcus. Despite where it originated these are delicious cookies!! thanks for reminding me about them. I might have to make them this weekend! 🙂
Yes this yummy recipe made the rounds. 🙂 I have added tons of cinnamon to mine or a bit of cardamom both yummy.
I break up a big bar of chocolate in addition to the chips, I use this recipe too, I always called it the Neinman Marcus cookie, whatever they are called they are the best!
Sounds yummy!! Send me some to Sav’h…..j/k I hope to get a chance to make these this
wk-end. I know it’s a big “no-no”, but I like to eat the dough too. : 0 )
Hope I haven’t missed it, but I can’t find where you posted about fall decorating of your porch. Maybe you haven’t posted that yet. I sure don’t want to miss it. Thanks
HI, Kathy, I didn’t decorate my back porch, if that is what you mean. I only have a wreath on the front porch.
Those chocolate chip cookies look delicious, I am now craving sugar :). Unfortunately I cannot tolerate gluten but wondering if you know a recipe that is gluten free? I have a terrible sweet tooth and don’t bake very often as when I do, I can’t stop until the last crumb is gone, whether it be cakes or cookies. I still, however, would love a gluten free recipe for crisp chocolate chippy cookies.
Lee 🙂
HI, Lee, sorry I don’t have a gluten free recipe. I do eat gluten and I can imagine it would be a little difficult to get a really good chocolate chip cookie that is gluten free.
Oh my goodness – yum! These looks delicious; I’ll have to try them soon!

Segreto Finishes
I have to make several dozen cookies this weekend for my daughter’s fencing club. I was going to make regular chocolate chip, but I decided to make these instead! I’ve had them before, but never had the recipe. Thanks!
I’m making these delicious cookies this weekend!! 🙂 Yumm!
Have a batch of these in the oven right now! What an easy recipe! I have pinned it for future use 🙂 Thanks Rhoda!
