Our family grew up going to Shoney’s. A lot! That was one of our favorite places to go after church on Sunday nights and we spent many evenings hanging out with the young people and older folks from our church. Big Boys and french fries were my faves back then. And there were many times that we splurged on dessert. Remember those strawberry pies and hot fudge cakes?!
Oh my, were those fantastic! We loved them.
My mom learned how to make those pies many years ago and we had them at home so many times over the years. Recently she found strawberries straight from her hometown area of Plant City, FL in the local stores for 79 cents a package and we have been eating tons of strawberries this year. Out came the strawberry pie recipe from old and guess how many we’ve already had around here.
Four! I know, it’s ridiculous.
Strawberry pies. Man, they are hard to pass up. In fact, I just can’t do it. I’ll walk another lap around the block just to have some pie.
Does that get your taste buds going?
I could die over these, they are so good.
And, of course, I’ll share my mom’s recipe with you.
Homemade Strawberry Pie
1 store bought crust (she doesn’t make crusts much anymore, since you can get such good ones at the store)
Place in pie pan or get one in a pie pan. Bake until golden brown. Let cool.
1 cup sugar
1 cup water
3 TBL. cornstarch
Cook until slightly thickened. Add three TBL. strawberry Jello (dry from the box). Let cool. Red food coloring (drops) optional.
Place 2 cups strawberries in cooled crust. Pour the strawberry mixture over the berries. Place in fridge to set up.
Add a dollop of whipped cream
Eat and smile really big!
I hope you’ll try this one for your family. I promise, you will smack your lips on this one.
And maybe even have fond memories of Shoney’s!
Sounds delicious Rhoda, The strawberry jello is right from the box right?
Big boy’s and fries were my favorite too. Thank your Mom for sharing her recipe with us.
I just had my first Strawberry Pie last night…it was so good so I was really excited to find this recipe this morning…thanks
Thanks for sharing! I loved going to Shoneys…my sister worked there one summer so we went a lot. The hot fudge cake was my favorite.
This is exactly the recipe my mom got from an elderly lady YEARS ago except we use a small box of strawberry jello(maybe this is 3T?) and never any foood coloring. I have made hundreds of these pies usually 4 at a time like you:) Everyone raves how yummy the pies are and I like how easy it is to make! I have also made these pies using splenda and sugar-free jello. Why would anyone ever buy the pre-made goop they sell in the produce section? Enjoy, I know I will:)
Yummmm…..loved Shoney’s Hot Fudge Cake (we called it Hot Sludge Cake) and the Strawberry pie. I also sent quite a few Sunday after church evenings there. Eating there with a group of youth helped get my first date with my husband to see Jaws at the movies… ha!
Rhoda- NOBODY grows strawberries like FL does. I can remember driving from Zephyrhills to Plant City to pick up strawberries with my in-laws. We don’t have Shoney’s around here but we had BigBoy which is the Midwest version….and they have the same menu. Those pies are memorable. Thanks for the recipe. We won’t have any fresh strawberries around here until late June, early July…so I am saving this recipe for then! xo Diana
Have you ever had June bearing strawberries from Minnesota or Wisconsin? They are absolutely the best – big, sweet and juicy.
Spent many a date night at Shoney’s, then loved their breakfast bar with my husband and children. I make a Cherry O Pie. Do you remember those? My boys couldn’t wait to try it until it set, so they call it “goop”. Would love to have the Cherry Yum Yum my mom used to make. Love the Shoney’s Pie! On the menu this week.
Thanks Rhoda
I loved Shoneys too, and their hot fudge cake. I haven’t been to a Shoney’s in years as they don’t have any where I live now. I would love to try your mom’s recipe for this pie!
That sounds and looks delicious. Very nice dessert.
I have strawberries in the fridge and jello in the cabinet. Looks like I’ll have that pie before supper. Thanks for the recipe.
I am so printing this out… Actually, as I type this. : ) I love strawberry pie (especially Shoney’s) and have always wondered how to make it. I may have to try this over the weekend.
Thank you so much for sharing!

Thank you for sharing this! My bf and his family LOVE the strawberry pie that his SIL’s mom makes, but I had no idea how to make it. Now I can surprise him with a strawberry pie as soon as we get some good strawberries here in IL.
I was just thinking about this the other day and planning to ask Mom how to make one! Yum! We’d always buy a Shoney’s pie and take it to our hotel room when we were on vacation!
Ive never had a Shoney’s pie, but have saved the recipe. Looks de-lish! Even before breakfast!
Oh that brought back memories Rhoda! We don’t have Shoney’s here in Oregon but I remember going to them when we lived in the mid-west. And I LOVE strawberry pie! Just makes me dream of summer and warmer days. 🙂

Oh, Rhoda, this recipe is so timely. I have some locally grown strawberries in my fridge right now, so I’m going to make this today. I’m going to try to do a version using Splenda and sugar-free jello as suggested by another commenter. I used to make these pies all the time in the 1970s, and I had pretty much forgotten about them, so thank your mom for the recipe!
We used to have this pie when I was a kid too. I’m gonna have to make some for my family’s Easter get together this Sunday!
Rhoda, you’ve conjured up some great memories. Shoney’s definitely played a large role in my adolescent social life. I miss big boys and those great onion rings, and yes, strawberry pie. My mom made quite a few back in the 70s. I can’t wait to make this! Thanks for your mom’s recipe.
We don’t have Shoney’s in New England but my friend’s late mom was from the midwest and she made that but used ginger ale instead of water. It’s the only strawberry pie I ever eat! Thanks for the reminder – I need to make that soon!
Congrats on your new home. Though our styles are vastly different, I enjoy your decorating none the less and will enjoy seeing you breath life into that house!
This looks DELISH! It was always such a special treat when my grandmother made Strawberry pie but she didn’t have a recipe. This is priceless, thanks so much for sharing!
