(left to right, me, Maureen, Renee, Sandy, & Tricia)
I’ve been fortunate to have made some friends with a group of ladies who all live in the same neighborhood. You remember our Southern Living lunch at Tricia’s house? Since none of us have children at home, we have dubbed ourselves the Empty Nesters, and last week I had lunch with them. We ate at a fun girly-girl place in Mountain Brook called Olexa’s. Good food, fun place to go for lunch, but leave the boys at home. They would not like the salads or the quiche! We all got yummy salads & yakked away. I was on my lunch hour, so had to get back to work. They, on the other hand, did not! We don’t get together as much as we’d like, but it sure is fun when we do. I don’t know what my right arm is doing, I think I was trying to scoot back to get in the picture…looks like I’m a spaz!
We actually met again this week after work for Mexican and brought our hubbies. That was so fun too, getting to meet each other’s spouses. We’re going to plan an evening real soon for all the couples to get together & go out to eat & socialize. That’s always fun to do!

My buddy, Willzmom at Lots of Little Things, has tagged me to post 5 Things I Remember, that start with I Remember When……so here goes:
- I remember when I got my first car and promptly put in an 8-track player…I thought I was SO cool! Some of you will not even know what I’m talking about. That technology is something you’ve only heard about in passing. Others of you will be right on board, baby!
- I remember when gas was 27 cents a gallon, back when I first started driving. Boy, have times changed!
- I remember when we got our first TV, when I was 6 years old. It was a big black & white console and the first thing that came on was the old cartoon of the big rooster & the little baby rooster. I can’t even remember the name of it. Anyone remember that one? The daddy had a deep voice & called the baby…Boooyyyy. Refresh my memory, please?!
- I remember wearing clothes my mom sewed for me. She always sewed our clothes growing up and it was a big deal for me when I got to be a teenager and earned some money, so I could buy real store-bought clothes. Wooooo-hoooooo!
- I remember going on family vacations and my sister and me making pallets in the backseat. Sometimes one would lay on the big bench seat (we always had HUGE 4-door cars) and the other would be on the floor, with lots of blankets of course to make the hump in the floor even. I would even lay back on the flat part under the back window sometimes. Seat belts were not a big deal back then. Can you imagine doing that today?
That’s enough good ole’ memories for now! Hope ya’ll have a great weekend. I’m the Social Director for our neighborhood now & we have a Halloween Festival planned for Sunday. Hope we have a decent turnout. I’ve got the local fire department bringing out a truck for the kids to look at & we’ll be doing pizza & dessert. I’ll try to post some pics next week!

I love the idea of the Empty Nesters club! Your “5 Things I remember” list was fun to read. I remember 8 track tapes & the 8 track tape holder (that looked like a suitcase):-} Great memories!
Have a wonderful weekend Rhoda.

Rhoda,
Oh, an empty nesters club? I am going to start one. In like 11 or 12 years. Rats!
Yes, even I remember 8 tracks. And those big ol’ bench seats you could lay down on, with no seatbelt.
Have fun with your neighborhood social directors job, sounds right up your alley! Maybe you could arrange some garage sale outings too! No end to the fun you get to have!
xo,
Melissa

Loved reading your “remember whens”…we must be in the same age group! My first car also had an 8-track, and the people I got it from gave me a tape to listen to…In A Gadda Da Vida! The name of your cartoon character is Foghorn Leghorn, I believe.

I was going to say Foghorn Leghorn, too. Sounds like Howell Heflin. (A long time Alabama Senator that we may or may not be proud of.)
You’re a busy girl, aren’t you? I can’t imagine being the neighborhood Social Director!
Rhoda @ Southern Hospitality says
That’s it! Foghorn Leghorn…I couldn’t think of it!
Yep, somedays I wonder why I volunteered to be on the board & do the social activities for the neighborhood. We haven’t had anyone doing it for over a year now, so it was time to get something going, so I raised my hand. I don’t think it will keep me too busy, I hope anyway! My hubby is the Treasurer.
Thanks for stopping by!
Rhoda

Hope your halloween gig is great! I love your empty nesters club, such a great way to keep in touch with your kids’ friends’ parents!
Robin~Thrifty Miss Priss says
Rhoda, you really brought back some memories for me! Around 1967 we drove (with five kids) two days straight to North Dakota to visit my grandparents. We had a big ole buick I think but one thing is for sure…blankets were on the floor of the back seat so someone could lay there without the hump and yes, I was the youngest, so I sprawled out in the flat area of the back windshield! I can’t imagine driving to the mailbox now without a seat belt but we sure did it back then!

That’s a great photo of everyone, especially you Rhoda. You’re looking good girl! I wouldn’t have noticed your arm if you hadn’t mentioned it. Too funny! Lunch with girlfriends is always fun.
Enjoy your weekend.
Hugs!
Kat

I remember reading every single one of the thousands of comic books Renee and Rhoda had stacked in the laundry room one summer. My dad used to be Uncle Al’s supply pastor when the Vickers went on vacation every summer, and we would stay in their house.
Sandi @the WhistleStop Cafe says
That was a fun list of memories… We were there in the same era!
Have a fun weekend.
