Magazine Street New Orleans

We had some beautiful days in New Orleans and the weather most days was sunny and warmer than  Atlanta has been, which was a welcome change.  Those cold dreary days that happen this time of year are not so fun for weeks at a time, so it was nice to get a taste of spring down there.

One day, we hit Magazine Street for some browsing and looking, with the baby in tow in the stroller and had a nice day out and about.  Magazine Street is a really long street with lots of shops and restaurants and it goes from the French Quarter to Uptown New Orleans.  I’m starting to learn the lingo of where the various districts are, but still don’t know my way around.

nadeau

We parked an started browsing at Nadeau, a fun furniture place with solid wood furniture in all sorts of styles and finishes.  You may have one in your town, we have some in Atlanta.

They are always fun to browse, with unusual pieces and colors.

Lots of fun vintage items and new as well.  Colors galore.

magazine street scene

Walking down Magazine Street, noticed this on the side of a building.  Very much the flavor of New Orleans, with music and people out and about.

shotgun house

After browsing Magazine Street for a couple of hours (we barely made a dent in seeing it all), we drove through some side streets and I took a few pics of the cute shotgun houses.  I love all the details on these old shotguns, which are plentiful in New Orleans.

shotgun house 2

This one is a duplex, I think.  Aren’t they cute?

house in new orleans

Another pretty old house off Magazine Street.

camelback shotgun

Lauren said this is called a camelback shotgun, because they built on in the back and went up.  Very unique and pretty.  Love the character of these homes.

mardi gras decor

Decorated for Mardi Gras.

shotgun houses

Loved the gray and yellow of this duplex shotgun house.

new orleans house 2

The shutters and gingerbread details are so pretty on this one.

house new orleans

Stately and beautiful home with a beautiful iron fence. This might be Greek Revival style.

new orleans house 2 (2)

There are so many pretty homes to see in New Orleans.

new orleans victorian

One more white Victorian with a turret.  I so enjoy strolling and looking in New Orleans and this time it was really fun to get out and see more things.  There is still plenty to see and do and I’m sure when I get down there again, I’ll get out for more tours.  I still have a tour of the Garden District and French Quarter to share with y’all too!

Today is exciting for me personally here in my own city of Atlanta!  I got a great feature in the Atlanta Journal & Constitution paper, in the Homefinders section (Private Quarters).  So happy to get to show off my fixer-upper in this feature, along with a great pic of me and my dad.  A photographer came out and did a photoshoot of my house and it is in the paper today!  Happy Super Bowl Sunday!

Here’s the online link to all the pics for those of you not in Atlanta.  Just click through the arrows on the right of the pictures to see all 25 of them.

My husband grew up on Magazine Street, way before it became the antique mecca it is today. We’ve lived in SC for over 40 years now, and he still misses New Orleans every day.

Love the pics of New Orleans houses & antique stores. I would dearly love to go there & check out the stores & other sights. Maybe in a year or so after I sell my current home & get settled in another one. AJC did a fabulous job in showing off your home. The pic of you & your Dad is priceless. You are so blessed to still have him with you.

New Orleans is such a fun place. I wondered by many wonderful looking shops but didn’t stop in, as we were on a motorcycle. I learned later that most stores will ship. Let the shopping begin! Lol I would surely grab a bunch of those cotton balls.
Love the article on your renovated home, especially the picture of you and your dad.

Loved the Magazine Street Tour Rhoda, thanks! The photo spread in the AJC was delightful, your home is such an amazing testament to what talented, clever people can do with a vanilla builders house to make it a truly unique and interesting home. The phrase, ‘you’ve come a long way baby’, surely is an apt description of your lovely home. You and your Father are a design/build team that deserves more recognition! That photo of the two of you is truly priceless, obviously renovating has been good for you, you both look younger, healthier and happier than ever!! How wonderful for you and your beautiful family. Thank you again for sharing the photos!

My house is the one with the maroon doors that you captioned…”This one is a duplex, I think. Aren’t they cute?” Yes, most of our houses are duplexes. They’re called Camelback Shotgun Doubles. Each side is only 12 feet wide by 80 feet long. Each side is a mirror image of the other. Boths sides have 3 BR and 2 BA. Must owners live in once side and rent the other. Our left side is a popular Airbnb property.
