Making a Throw from Fabric Remnants

Back in the summer, I picked up this luscious piece of upholstery fabric remnant (about 3 yards) for $10 at a yardsale.  I brought it home, sure I could find something to do with it and since I have golds and browns in my den, finally decided to make it into a throw.  It has that bit of aqua blue in the flower, which I love. It took me awhile, but I got out the sewing machine (that little $45  yardsale find has really come in handy too) and just simply turned over the edges and stitched it up and I had picked up some brush trim to add to the ends, just to fancy it up a little. IMG_8136

With just a little sewing, I now have myself a nice and comfy throw for the sofas in the den.  I cut off 1 yard of and left the remaining 2 yards for the throw, so it’s plenty generous in size, especially since it’s fabric width,  more like a blanket.    IMG_8487

And the backside of the fabric is almost a chenille, so it’s really cozy and soft.  I wouldn’t want any professional seamstresses to examine it, but it’s just fine for my purposes. 🙂  I am not the best sewer in the world. IMG_8488

See how great it looks on the brown leather sofa and with the houndstooth pillows my mom sewed up for me?  I think I have about $22 total in this throw and if you price throws like this in the store, they can run over $100.  Not to mention this one is really big.

So, don’t overlook upholstery or fabric remnants when you’re out scouting the sales. You never know what you might run across.  I gave the other 1 yard piece of fabric to my friend, Debbie, and she made 2 pillows for her gold sofa.

So this 3 yard piece of remnant fabric really got stretched!

Someone asked about fringe sources.  I got this one at Hobby Lobby, (oops I misspoke, after checking my receipt, I did get this one at Fabric and Fringe Warehouse too)  but I have a favorite store in my hometown of Marietta, GA called Fabric and Fringe Warehouse.  I’ve posted about them before in a shopping post, but they also have an online shop (click that first link) and they carry a pretty good selection online of fabric and fringe and you can order samples before you commit to purchase.  And they have the best prices I’ve seen on fringe.

So pretty! I love looking at all kinds of fabric at yard sales and thrift stores! Last fall I found yards and yards of gold fringe that had never been unrolled (the original price was marked as 37 cents a yard – I bet it’s antique!) for $1. So I bought it and wrapped it around my Christmas tree. I hope it gets to go on some sewing projects soon – like lampshades, curtains, pillows. It’s great to reuse, repurpose thanks for letting us see how you do it!

That is beautiful with those houndstooth pillows! Love it.

Thanks for visiting my blog and entering the giveaway. When did you work at Ethan Allen? I liked it except for the stinky weekend hours. Good stuff to work with there. Keep in touch.

    I love your throw!

I wouldn’t want a professional seamstress to examine the things I’ve made, either, but it’s amazing what you can do if you try, isn’t it?

    Great job!

Beautiful fabric! You made a lovely throw.

We are in the midst of remodeling. My husband and I are both very traditional and have purchased Louie XIV style furniture (claw feet and all). We also have a French/New Orleans flare (eccentric). I have a butcher table that I love in exception to the color. It almost has a oak finish (blah) and it hardly goes with anything in the house. We have dark rich colors, mossy green, golds, burnt oranges, and chocolate browns so I don’t want to paint it white. I’m afraid black would cheapen it. Any suggestions on color?

What a terrific idea! I often see decorator fabrics at sales but hesitate to buy because I don’t know how to use it simply.

    Thanks again, Rhoda.
