If there is one area of my house that is still a disaster, it would be my garage. Definitely not a space I’m proud of yet.
So, I’ll start this one with a disclaimer. This is not going to be a pretty post. But, it’s a practical one. Getting organized in the basement was one of our topic choices with Lowes this month, so I opted to get some organization going in my garage, which is technically my basement. It’s the worst spot left in my house that needs some TLC and I haven’t gotten around to beautifying that space yet. One of these days, I’ll tackle it and get it really completely organized and looking better too. My plan is to take everything out of there, go through the boxes that are still left from when I moved in that I haven’t completely gone through yet (you know how that is, right?). I know most of that stuff will be going to Goodwill and then my garage walls will be much cleaner and clear of clutter. Once I take everything out of there, I’m going to paint all the walls and cinderblock with nice white paint to brighten it up and make it feel cleaner. But, in the meantime, I at least got a little bit of organization going in the garage.
But, it’s not pretty yet, just a warning! Most bloggers try to share only pretty stuff, but here you get real too. As much as I love pretty pics, real life takes over sometimes and that is where my garage is at the moment. Real and ugly!
This corner right by where I park my car had a left over pallet that has been sitting here since I moved in. I hauled it to the trash pick up spot in my front yard and someone magically hauled it off before the trash truck got there. So glad someone got it, because I really had no use for it. I know lots of DIY projects have revolved around pallets, but I’m just not really a pallet girl. Once I cleaned out that area and swept up all the leaves, I moved down the metal shelves that I found ages ago at a yardsale. You can never have too many shelves, can you?
I went to Lowe and picked up some garage organizing tools and came home and got busy. In less than an hour, I had all of the pieces mounted up on the studs. Now I have lots more storage options to get my tools off the floor and up on the wall. I love that about organizing! This whole space will look so much better with just paint added.
I nailed the pegboard directly onto the studs and added a few hooks on there. I can use this for many things and add more hooks later. That metal shelving I’ll eventually paint, once I get around to painting my cinderblock walls too
To the right of the pegboard, I added this other piece from Lowes. By the way, I found all of these organizing tools in the Home Organization section at Lowes. They have lots to choose from for all your organizing needs. This little rack holds my rakes and brooms up off the floor. Nice!
So that’s one spot that is a little more organized now. Not pretty yet, but better than before.
Next I moved on to my hand tools and garden tools. I bought a set of 2 rack systems from Lowes called Rubbermaid Fast Track. The box came with two 32” rail system pieces, that screw into the studs. Then the cover slides over to hide all the screws and the big hooks just snap over the rail system to hold bigger things up off the ground. You can see I have 2 hooks for each rail.
My weedeater hangs from one and my nail guns from another one.
This is great for getting those tools off a flat surface and taking advantage of vertical space.
On the other rail system, I added my blower and step stool and my cordless drill.
These are out of the way now too and I love that.
One more piece that I picked up at Lowes is this heavy duty metal shelving system. It comes in a box and goes together really easy. I love how sturdy it is and I used it to store all my paint cans and paint supplies, which are plentiful around here. I always, always have lots of paint around the house.
So, I hope this gives you some ideas on how to get your garage or basement organized with some useful tools from Lowes home organization section. I will be working on this garage at some point and making it even better. I have some nice built in cabinets in here and they are still filled with all my renovation supplies. This is the last area I have to tackle in this house and I’ll get to it eventually. In the meantime, I’m at least a little more organized in here.
I, too, am a fan, of showing only realistic images. Functionality is always key. I was not aware of the Rubbermaid Fast Track system and am happy to say that this may work for my garage organization needs, too. My paint cans overflow as much as yours. Hate to discard if can be used for a diy someday, right?
Always love your blog. FYI I followed many Instagrammers who attended your Haven Conference last month and cannot wait to attend my first next year.
Looks great, Rhoda. I’ve bought three of those industrial shelving units, and am in the midst of organizing my basement. I’ve clocked 24 hrs so far, and have at least that much more to go. Slow and steady progress keeps me going. That, and being able to fill my car with donations and trash bins with empty boxes! Have a great week!

Thanks for sharing! I need to get a broom holder like that for my laundry room, glad to know where to find one!
We moved into the House of Highlands a little over a year ago and we have yet to organize our garage! I hope to tackle it in the fall but I dread it because it’s going to be a major project! I like your ideas and definitely plan to use as much pegboard as possible! Yours is coming together nicely! Great job!

I can appreciate the finished project so much more when the raw and unfinished is first shown. I love your paint collection. 🙂
Praise the Heavens!! I am NOT the only one with a block wall garage!!! I too want to paint the inside/ outside with concrete stain ( don’t want paint to peel off due to Ohio winters. ). But we will be moving to Florida in a yr-18 mo. and I am not sure I’ll get to it. Love your organizing tips .
Did you get the hooks that go on the peg board from Lowe’s?
Yes, Nancy, all of the hooks and rails came from Lowes. THey have a great organizational area for all of this stuff.
Great tools for organizing…my hubby considers himself the Master Garage Organizer..so I will have to show him these ideas….
Rhoda, I love that you show the real before and after. I couldn’t help but smile at your discarded pallet. My cousins adopted a child with the profits from clocks, furniture and accessories made out of pallets. They would have been someone to pick it up from your curb, too! You never know who you might be helping with your donations and sometimes even your trash.
Hey Rhoda! I’m catching up on your blog today. It’s always inspiring.
Question about the Rubbermaid Track system-do you know the weight limit they can hold?
We’ve been using large hooks for holding our luggage travel tray (it’s pretty heavy) and it keeps falling down. Besides scaring the bejeebers out of us when it happens, it’s dinged the car too!
Just curious…..
Thanks!
Hey, Bridget, I’m not sure of the weight limit on these, but I think it has it listed on the package. I don’t remember. I’ve got my folding ladder and trimmer up there and they seem to be fine. Check out the system at Lowes!
