I’m enjoying bringing back some gold accents in decorating and you’ll probably see more of it on my blog in the future. I have always loved gold in jewelry and using it in decorating too, with picture frames and general accents around a room. With the over done abundance of brass back in the 90’s, I think a lot of us got turned off by so much brassy gold and started paring that down in our decorating too. But, gold is back in a big way. It’s elegant, classic, and exudes a feeling of royalty.
I thought it would be fun to paint some gold stripes on glass to add a little sparkle for holiday decorating. Whether you’re setting a Thanksgiving table or need some ideas for any holiday gathering coming up, simple glass vessels with a little golden touch would be a fun accent on the table. Fill them with flowers or whatever your heart desires.
I used a can of antique gold spray paint that I had on hand, Design Masters and it’s a beautiful burnished Antique Gold.
I picked up these plain and simple glass vases at a yardsale for 50 cents each. I still love shopping thrifty and enjoy seeing what I can make out of my cheap finds.
Working with FrogTape gives me the opportunity to flex my creative brain and come up with some inexpensive ideas that I think all of you will enjoy too. Aren’t we all trying to save some pennies? I used FrogTape to add stripes to my vases, horizontal and vertical. There’s the Design Master Antique Gold spray paint I used. I think I got that at Michaels ages ago.
I changed my mind on taping off the square one and came up with this one for the final.
I used vertical stripes on the larger vase and all of that glass will be sprayed gold. This is certainly nothing new and bloggers have been painting stripes on glass and other types of vases forever, so I didn’t invent this, just used it for my own project.
Make sure the edges are pressed down really well and it’s a good idea to go over your glass with alcohol and dry it well before taping. Sometimes tape doesn’t stick well to glass. And be aware, that spray paint will scratch off glass too, so you just have to be a little careful after it’s sprayed. Since vases are usually just sitting around and don’t get handled a lot, this is still a quick and easy method for a holiday centerpiece. You can’t beat the price!
After spray painting with gold, I pulled off the FrogTape, leaving pretty gold stripes on my vase.
If you have some smudges on the glass, a Q-tip and alcohol will get it off quick.
Once my vases were dried well overnight, I gathered some turning leaf branches from my yard. My dogwood tree is turning all sorts of pretty Fall colors right now along with some bright red berries.
All those gorgeous reds and golds are perfect for this time of year. I added a little bouquet of deep red mums to the smaller square vase for a little accent.
IÂ love pulling out books and other accessories in Fall colors to make the display even prettier.
You could even use this as a dining room table centerpiece.
I love how this Fall vignette pulls out the browns in my painting above and gives my table a little extra sparkle. With the gold knobs on my yardsale desk (found ages ago and painted black by me), this little corner of the living room is Fall ready with just a few accents.
I hope this gave you some ideas on picking up old glass pieces and striping them with gold accents. It’s fresh and festive and elegant! Not to mention frugal and you know how much I like frugal.
Working with FrogTape, I’m always on the lookout for something that I can repurpose and make better. That’s my Frogtape project this month, hope this got you inspired once again with the POWER of paint and how you can virtually change anything with paint. My fave home improvement weapon, paint does wonders for everything.

You mentioned using alcohol before taping, what does that do?
Sometimes glass can have smudges or residue, the alcohol will just clean it good. Make sure it’s really dry before you put on the tape though.
Cute idea…I LOVE the whole vignette!!
Very pretty….love the contrast of the glass/gold with the rough branch/leaves.
I have several glass pieces and gold spray paint…hhmmm which one first? 😉
The whole display including the console table is very pretty.
Beautiful! I need to do this!
Ooh such a fun DIY! Would make great gifts too! They turned out great!!

This would be cute on one of those glass pumpkin candy dishes from way back. Every other “bump” on the pumpkin could be gold! Guess what I’m doing over the next few days?!!!
Ms.Rhoda, can not wait to try that on white( milk glass) vases cheap from GW…I bought on clearance Lowes Frogtape in chevron & waves …NOW I know what yo do w it! & on canvas’s from Micheal’s & Hobby Lobby…use the chevron/ waves on canvas & get a stencil for a single letter or all3 letters for a custom monogram!
LOVE the gold with the beautiful fall colors and with the soft blue lamp! Clear glass vases are always in abundance at my local thrift store, so I have fun switching them up too! 🙂
The gold paint gave those vases a totally new look and the Frog tape seems to have mad the project go smoothly. Great job!
I just bought some glass vases from GW waiting for something to do with them. Off topic – just moved and the living room is very large. I was going to go with a lighter theme ie white cabinets, blues, chrome accents, etc. but have a very large black entertainment center which I don’t think the hubs will let me paint. I also wanted to incorporate some white board and batten on an accent wall.
Do you provide specific decorating advice?
Thanks,
Dana
Hi, Dana, I just don’t have much time these days to do decorating consultations. I do think you can mix black and white in a room though, so I think you’d be find to leave the black entertainment center with other white cabinets. Be sure to sprinkle black around the room to tie it all in.
this is the prettiest thing I have seen you do! Love the whole table..
Love this simple and inexpensive way to change the look of the vases. This collection of colors and light photographed really well. I am inspired to do more than paint my glass vases! Thank you for that. I really like the painting on the wall too. Do you know the artist?
Hi, Lisa, thanks for stopping by, that painting is from Ballard Designs and I don’t know the artist.
These turned out great! I love the gold and love how easy it is to turn any old vase or jar into something beautiful!
