Painting Stripes on a Basket

Baskets are SO versatile!  They can be used for so many things around the house, so when I got this big basket in from Wayfair, I decided that it needed a big stripe around it to set it off.  Black is always a great choice as an accent color, so that’s what I did.  I’m planning to use my big basket to hold throws in my family room/den, which I’m currently working on.  After we got the bookshelves finished, I am now recovering the recliner, getting a chair and ottoman for the reading corner and finally getting this space finished, I hope.

So, this humongous basket will land in the den eventually, housing all my throws and extra pillows.

before basket

This is the basket when I got it unpacked from shipping.  Really huge basket with great handles and a pretty color too.

taped with Frogtape

It just needed a little something extra so an extra wide stripe will do the trick.  Of course, I’m using my wonderful FrogTape® that comes in handy for so many things.  I’m a FrogTape brand ambassador and it really has been fun to see what all I can do with it.  I measured my stripe to be 5” wide and tried to keep it pretty even on the top and bottom.  I just used a tape measure and taped it in place making sure I had the same amount of stripe all the way around the basket.

tape newspaper

Then, once it was taped I got out newspaper to tape off where I didn’t want the paint to hit.  Spray painting something like a stripe is the quickest way to do it, so that’s what I did.  Spray paint is great for this kind of project because of the crevices in a basket.  I tucked newspaper inside the basket too to make sure it didn’t fly all over the inside of the basket.

black spray paint

Then, I simply sprayed with Rustoleum Satin Black spray paint, which I always have on hand too.  It covers great and always works well.  Once I sprayed my stripe and had it covered well, I simply moved around the basket, taping the next section and spraying that one as well.  You can immediately take the tape off as soon as you spray paint, leaving a nice line on the basket.

After all 4 sides were done, my basket looked like this, just the way I wanted it.  I love the black stripe and think it adds a lot to the basket.

Wayfair basket

For now the basket is in my living room, but it will eventually move down to the den, where it will have lots of space to sit and be pretty.  I can’t wait to work on that room more and finally get my corner all spruced up and looking pretty.

That’s my Frogtape project this month, hope this got you inspired once again with the POWER of paint and how you can virtually change anything with paint. My fave home improvement weapon, paint does wonders for everything.

A big basket is a work horse in the house. I have a few that have held baby diapers, legos, superheroes, books and now garden shoes at the back door! I would have never thought to paint an accent on it, but your stripe gives it a whole new look!

HI, Nancy, I have gotten notes from several people saying the same thing. I have searched at Feedburner trying to find out what is wrong and other bloggers are having this happen too. I’m hoping that it will correct itself, we don’t know how to fix it.

Rhoda, I noticed no email too but then I found it in my SPAM. For a week now I keep clicking “not spam” but your next post shows up in SPAM. Did Feedburner change the way they are sending?

HI, Linda, I have no idea, I don’t really know how Feedburner works, but apparently other folks are having problems too. I saw it in the forum over at Feedburner. I resynched my feed, so I’m hoping that helped. I did get an email today from someone who just got my latest email post, so I’m not sure if it’s sporadic or what. Hoping it resolves itself soon!

How pretty, Rhoda. The stripe really adds a lot of character to the basket. I recently added wheels to a very similar basket, and am using it for throw pillows and blankets, too. Can’t wait to see your finished den- I know it will be beautiful, just like all the other rooms of your home.

I love the stripe added to the basket. Seeing it sit beside that chair made me think it would be great with a glass or plexiglass top for a side table. AND that rug….LOVE it!

I just got a basket for the same purpose. How do you like your dark wood floors? Do the show much dust, dog hair, etc?

Sarah, I love my floors and no, they really don’t show that much dirt at all. White lint shows up, but they are not nearly as hard to keep clean as I thought they would be. I vacuum them once a week and use a swiffer thing occasionally.
