I have always loved growing flowers and now that I’m getting some outdoor spaces all spruced up, along with that comes container gardening, something I’ve always enjoyed doing. Â This time of year is perfect for planting flowers outdoors and watching them grow and explode with blooms.
So, today it’s about outdoor gardens and how fun they are this time of year!  I’m partnering with Wayfair and Porch.com (plants and supplies to plant) on this spring project, a potting bench and planters I got from Wayfair.  They also have a fun contest going on, but you have to be on Instagram for that.  If you are, post a photo of your yard or outdoor area that you want help with, for a chance to win a gift card from Wayfair and landscaping services from Porch.com.
How fun is that?
I have always wanted a potting bench and now I get to use this one on my new patio. Â I love potting small planters and this will be perfect for those projects and I won’t have to mess up my laundry room anymore. Â Wayfair gave me the opportunity to order some gardening items from their website and I choose the potting bench, 2 white planters, and some gardening tools. Â You can never have too many gardening tools and I was lacking in that department.
I went to my local Lowes and chose some plants for the planters: Â Wave petunias, sweet potato vine, bacopa, yellow lantana, and Pentas. Â In the middle is a Purple Fountain grass for height.Â
Remember, when you are planting planters to add height in the middle, something taller and something to spill over the side. Â I’ve always heard thriller, filler, and spiller to describe that process and it really does work! Â Once they all start growing, you’ll have quite the show.
The great thing about these planters is they have a cove in the bottom that helps hold water and keep the planters watered a lot longer. Â They have been thriving with the heat and rain we’ve been having. The planters have already been moved to my new patio and they will love all the sun they get back there. Â But, the good thing is after around 4 pm, it’s shady on the patio.
The potting bench will come in handy for all sorts of things, including potting plants and hosting a party on the patio.  I am going to paint it a brighter color to match my patio, but I like how it looks and the functionality will be super on the patio.
I enjoy indoor and outdoor plants, that is for sure.
Having some nice tools will be a big bonus too. I didn’t have any of these large clippers like this and they will definitely come in handy as I take care of my garden.
I do use my garden gloves!
This cute set of pink tools will be great too, from weeding, pruning and includes a little mat for kneeling. Â Hose nozzles too, in pink, how fun!
Gardening is good for the soul, don’t you think?
Here’s an update on the planters now, they have really grown in the few weeks since I planted them. Â There’s also some white and yellow in there, but you can’t see those blooms yet.
Now, they have a really good start to summer and I’ll continue to take care of them on the patio from here on. Â I’ll be back soon to share the whole patio makeover and I can hardly wait to get it all finished!
Are you planting flowers and gardening this year? Â Don’t forget the Instagram contest with Wayfair and Porch.com. Â Just use #greenthumbchallenge for the hashtag over there. Â
Note: This project was sponsored by Wayfair and Porch, but all ideas and how-to’s are all my own.
That potting bench looks like a really enjoyable work space, and I’m pretty sure that even I could not misplace my gardening tools if they were pink. But where did you find that watering can?!?!
Mel, the watering can came from Waverly last year. They have garden products too!
You have just been a busy bee. When this project is done, take you a big glass of sweet tea out on that new patio and relax. Love the entire makeover and can’t wait to see the wrap up. Those pink tools, so fun!
I’m not sure I would paint the potting bench. It might look best as is – not too matchy-matchy. Plus, once you paint it, that might be something you have to upkeep.
The planters look great! Depending on how the planters are placed, the height doesn’t necessarily have to be in the middle. I do alot of mine with the taller plant in the back of the pot or in my big antique boiler pot I have the tallest plant to one side and the trailing coming more down the other side. As you can tell, I like experimenting with the mixed containers!
I use those big clippers ALOT! However, I rarely use gloves. I just can’t stand wearing them! Only if I am going to be doing something where I might get stuck/scratched (thorns, etc.) will I wear them. LOL
Now you are set! Happy gardening! xo Leslie
I just ordered the bench. It’s on sale for $119 and the reviews are very good. Thanks for post as I’ve been looking for a potting bench!
Great, Susan, I think you’ll like it. I did paint mine, so you’ll see that next week.
These are some beautiful planters and I really like the crisp contrast that the actual planter brings to the brighter flowers. I had actually never heard of the thriller, filler, and spiller thing before, but it really does look like it works. I’ll have to pass this onto my mother-in-law next time we visit.
