At the end of this month, I’ll be heading to the ranch to meet Ree (excited squeal!!) and participate in my little video segment of our promotion, which has been building since March. My topic is bed and bath ideas, so let’s keep the conversation going with some other ideas on how to welcome guests in your home and to make them feel like they are in a bed and breakfast.
Our downstairs guestroom recently got the addition of Grandma Eleanor’s pretty blue slipcovered wingback chair, which had been up in her attic for over 5 years. Since she wasn’t using it anymore, I asked if I could bring it to our house to use and enjoy and she was fine with that. So, now it makes a great place for me to read when I want a quiet place to land and it serves a purpose for guests too, when we do have them in our home.
Do you decorate your guestroom for yourself or for your company? I think it’s probably more about what I like first and then hope that our guests will enjoy it and feel comfortable too and I think they do.
How about you??
Head on over to the Putting it All Together page for more on this subject from the other girls who are playing along.

Hi Rhoda! I decorate the guest room in a way that appeals to me. I love comfy and cozy, so I hope that my guests will as well. I like to provide little pampering items too just to make them special.
Love,
Susan and Bentley

I had commented on your previous post, but this topic made me think a little more.
When it comes to decorating I tend to lean more towards what pleases me. I feel that if my home is an environment that my family is completely happy with, that guests will enjoy it as well. When people are visiting it is usually to get away from their ordinary, often chaotic lives. With four kids I feel it often! I like clean lines, a few homey touches, but actually quite minimal. Too much stuff on a bedside table, covering the counter in the bathroom, or every end table in the house seems to add to the chaos, so for the sake of a calm atmosphere in our home, I tend to keep the decorating simple.
Guess what!? Since I took on this attitude a couple of years ago, I feel the difference in our home, even with our kids. This tells me that our guests enjoy it as well.
Another great way to make your guests feel special is pictures. If you have pics of them (with or without you or your family members) set it out in their room or in the living room for all to enjoy. Not only does it say that you care that they are in your home, it can be a great conversation starter if there is a story behind the photo!
I have enjoyed reading all the other responses. This has been a fun little series!

We just had a chair recovered to put in our guest bedroom. ( http://themerrittsintx.blogspot.com/2010/05/before-after-chair.html) We’ve never had a guest room before so it has been fun putting it together. My mother-in-law made some drapes and a matching bedskirt for me. I found a great rug at Tuesday morning and the found the perfect fabric for the chair. I just need a reading lamp and a dresser/luggage rack for guests to be able to unpack (or at least set up without having to kneel on the floor to find their clothes!). I love your ideas … keep them coming!

I have our guest room decorated with things that I love cause we see it 99% of the time. However, It is filled with things to make guests comfortable: soaps, lotions, shampoo, razors, toothbrush etc. in the bath and comfy sheets and blankets on the bed with lots of pillows. The only thing it doesn’t have is a TV, but my office is right across the hall with a TV, so guests are welcome to use it. XO, Pinky

I’ve never had a guest room, yet. Too many kids (3) but I am trying to work on making my home more comfortable for guests. My mom is a PRO at this. My parents live in MT now but my mom has the Southern Hospitality gene in spades. I just wish it had passed on down to me. . . I love your ideas. Great topic!

Hmm… we’re still in the “putting it all together” phase, but I can highly recommend the Bath forum at http://ths.gardenweb.com/forums/bath/ . These people KNOW their bathroom renovations, and are eager to make recommendations for anyone who’ll post photos! I read over there regularly, making notes for when we’re able to re-do our bathroom. Some of the redos are way more pricey than we’ll ever manage to finance, but there are still great ideas all over that forum!

I really don’t have a guest room. The room it would be is a play room for my little grandkids. We have a train set, tv, toy chests, etc. Maybe one day when they get bigger and don’t need a place to play/.
