Do you find yourself saying any of these things?
- I don’t know how to cook.
- My food never turns out.
- My house isn’t up to par.
- I’m just too busy.
- We can’t afford it.
Sound familiar? If you’ve had these thoughts, then this book is for you.
When I first started blogging, there was a sweet friend named Sandy who I connected with early on in the blogosphere. She is beautiful inside and out and she writes a beautiful blog as well. I had the pleasure of meeting her at the last 2 Blissdom conferences and she is just as genuine in real life as she is on her blog. Truly the best thing about blogging for me has been the friendships forged with women across the country who I would never have the chance to meet in person. But, blogging brings us all together.
(me and Sandy at Blissdom)
One of the things that I noticed right away from Sandy’s blog is that she encourages her readers to open up their homes and entertain. Have people over. Share meals and share stories. Get to know others on a deeper level by sharing a meal. I love that and really would like to get better at it. Sandy really encourages that on her blog and now, in her new book, The Reluctant Entertainer.
Sandy was nice enough to send me a copy of her book and it is just beautiful. Every woman’s guide to simple and gracious hospitality is the tag line and it certainly delivers.
Chock full of Sandy’s own recipes, as well as real-life entertaining stories from Sandy’s family and home, this book is such a useful tool for opening up our doors to others. It’s filled with her own beautiful photos too that you will love.
I grew up in a Pastor’s home and we were always having people over to our house. My mom thought nothing of inviting a couple of families over after church on Sunday night for a meal. It might be nothing more than warming up left-over ham for ham sandwiches, chips and fruit, but it was a very memorable time for me, savoring friendships with those families and sharing a meal together. Food just makes everything better!
Sandy’s book is so useful as she goes through all the reasons why women do not want to take the time to have folks over these days. It does seem like the world has gotten busier and busier, with not enough time taken to slow down and savor friendships. Sandy’s book will definitely help you see the benefit of entertaining and getting out of your comfort zone.
If you’d like to win a copy of Sandy’s book, just leave a comment here and tell me if you are a frequent entertainer or are you like so many and reluctantly open up your home to others. We all probably have some improvement to do in this area, I know I do.
I will have ONE copy to giveaway, so just leave a comment! I’ll draw a winner in a few days! Just in time for Mother’s Day, you can always give it a little late!

I score ‘LOW’ in hospitality and would love to have this book for encouragement in this area.
Hi, Rhoda. I love to entertain, and I tend to be very laid-back about it, but we do not entertain as much as we did because our children are older, and we are so busy! My eldest is getting ready to graduate in three weeks, and my youngest is in middle school, and she is busy, too. I would love to win a copy of The Reluctant Entertainer because I love learning new things, and I am sure it is inspiring. Thanks for hosting another great giveaway!
I am a reluctant entertainer. It always seems daunting.
I’m a reluctant entertainer. When I have people over we have so much fun. But it’s so much stress before everyone gets there.
I am a frequent entertainer for family! Friends not so much because I have no time for me. I have all the major holidays and simple Sunday afternoon meals for my Mom (who is 85 and lives alone) and my sister-in-law who visits every 2 weeks to see her Mom in a nursing facility. I don’t mind the cooking, cleaning etc but working at a highly stressed job just complicates the pressure I feel to provide a nice table and meal. I would love to find more time to entertain my friends only! So, please pick me to win this book!
Hi Rhoda,
I need a book like that, I would love to entertain, but…my house is so small, I love to cook, but what if I cook stuff they don’t eat…and on and on it goes. I would so love to entertain, I need the connection that it would give me.
Have a sweet day.
Hugs, Cindy
I LOVE to entertain! Looks like a beautiful book and I can always use new ideas!
I love entertaining… My problem is that I fall into the rut of making the same recipes over and over. I could use new ones! 🙂
I have a beautiful home to entertain in but if everything isn’t perfect I shy away from inviting people here. This looks like a book I could certainly use for advice.
That sounds like such an encouraging book Rhoda!! Would love to get some new ideas for hospitality.
I am a VERY infrequent entertainer. I want to entertain–to sit out on my deck with a few friends over dinner, but just never quite get it together enough to do it!
Thanks for sharing Sandy’s book. I just ordered a sample to be sent to my Kindle. Looking forward to finding the secret to enjoying having company at home.
such a fun giveaway!! i am a moderate to frequent entertainer. i love love to entertain…but i am so ocd about it. i want everything to always be perfect!
We entertain, but not as much as I would like. This sounds like a wonderful way to invite people more often.
Our house was always full of my children’s friends when they were growing up but now it gets pretty quiet. I have good intentions of having people over but unless they just drop by I don’t seem to get it done.
Hi Rhoda, I have wanted to order Sandys book but still haven’t done it. I love to entertain but it is usually big family get together for special occasions. I would love to have small casual meals with friends more often & not worry that I may not have time to make everything perfect. I know Sandy is trying to show us that our guests don’t care if everything is perfect they just enjoy the fellowship. I hope you are doing ok in Atlanta.
I hardly ever entertain so maybe this book would help me to be a gracious hostess.
I wasn’t an reluctant entertainer when I was single (or maybe the key there is younger 🙂 I got married 7+ months ago & have turned into a bit of a hermit since. I need to get my entertaining mojo back & think this book would be the kick start that I need!
I love the idea of entertaining and have this great vision but it never plays out to what I expected.
I’m a reluctant entertainer, Rhoda, although I do love to entertain. I’m often overwhelmed when it comes to cleaning up my house, though! Once the work is done and the group is here, I’m loving it!
