Do you find yourself saying any of these things?
- I don’t know how to cook.
- My food never turns out.
- My house isn’t up to par.
- I’m just too busy.
- We can’t afford it.
Sound familiar? If you’ve had these thoughts, then this book is for you.
When I first started blogging, there was a sweet friend named Sandy who I connected with early on in the blogosphere. She is beautiful inside and out and she writes a beautiful blog as well. I had the pleasure of meeting her at the last 2 Blissdom conferences and she is just as genuine in real life as she is on her blog. Truly the best thing about blogging for me has been the friendships forged with women across the country who I would never have the chance to meet in person. But, blogging brings us all together.
(me and Sandy at Blissdom)
One of the things that I noticed right away from Sandy’s blog is that she encourages her readers to open up their homes and entertain. Have people over. Share meals and share stories. Get to know others on a deeper level by sharing a meal. I love that and really would like to get better at it. Sandy really encourages that on her blog and now, in her new book, The Reluctant Entertainer.
Sandy was nice enough to send me a copy of her book and it is just beautiful. Every woman’s guide to simple and gracious hospitality is the tag line and it certainly delivers.
Chock full of Sandy’s own recipes, as well as real-life entertaining stories from Sandy’s family and home, this book is such a useful tool for opening up our doors to others. It’s filled with her own beautiful photos too that you will love.
I grew up in a Pastor’s home and we were always having people over to our house. My mom thought nothing of inviting a couple of families over after church on Sunday night for a meal. It might be nothing more than warming up left-over ham for ham sandwiches, chips and fruit, but it was a very memorable time for me, savoring friendships with those families and sharing a meal together. Food just makes everything better!
Sandy’s book is so useful as she goes through all the reasons why women do not want to take the time to have folks over these days. It does seem like the world has gotten busier and busier, with not enough time taken to slow down and savor friendships. Sandy’s book will definitely help you see the benefit of entertaining and getting out of your comfort zone.
If you’d like to win a copy of Sandy’s book, just leave a comment here and tell me if you are a frequent entertainer or are you like so many and reluctantly open up your home to others. We all probably have some improvement to do in this area, I know I do.
I will have ONE copy to giveaway, so just leave a comment! I’ll draw a winner in a few days! Just in time for Mother’s Day, you can always give it a little late!

I love to have friend’s over to eat especially in the summertime and we fire up the grill. Seeing children running everywhere to the smell of hamburgers on the grill is pure joy in my book ! Happy Mother’s Day to all the Mom’s out there !!!!!!!!!!
Hi Rhoda, Love your blog! Like your mom, I’m now the pastor’s wife! My husband left his 34 year career and is now pastoring our small church. I am a relunctant entertainer due to the normal excuses but would really like to relax, let the stress go and enjoy all the great friends we have made in our church!
Oh Rhoda,
If I answered yes to all, does that mean I am reluctant? I really look forward to reading her book….one way or another!
Oh, what a lovely give-a-way and one I would be thrilled to win! I love to entertain and do so as often as my schedule allows. It isn’t always a big formal event, sometimes just drinks and appetizers on the porch. Or a spontaneous ‘have a glass of wine’ with friends or neighbors.
Thank you so much for entering me for this prize. Fingers crossed! 🙂
I do entertain …not as much as I would like to, however. I would love a copy of this book.
I love having people over for food and fellowship, we just don’t have a lot of room for large groups and we don’t have lots of storage space for entertaining supplies. I do try my best though and I love to cook special dishes and desserts for friends and family.
I love to entertain but I don’t do enough of it. Mostly because I want everything perfect….which doesn’t happen often! I could use this book for sure.
Jeannette
I have seen this book all over blogland! It must be really good and I always love to entertain!
I’d love to win this book! I haven’t entertained in so long. I feel lost at even thinking where to begin. I really do need to make the push to invite people over and not stay so cut off from the outside world.
i do big family get togethers, holidays, birthdays, but i tend to be all or nothing. it’s rare for us to just have one other family over.
I would say we entertain fairly often. It is a blessing that my husband enjoys it as much as I do and he really helps with the housework and the cooking!! That being said, I would love having Sandy’s book for ideas and recipes!!
I’d love to win the book. I’m a very reluctant entertainer!
I’m a reluctant entertainer … too much work!! Before & After … I’d love to see her ideas on how to be more spontaneous and less freaked out about every detail!!!!
Thanks for the giveaway opp! Blessings!
I’m a very reluctant entertainer…knowing that I have to entertain guests always causes a lot of stress. Would love to check out this book. Thanks!
I would like to entertain , but worry things aren’t perfect. I am glad to see there are others like me. I could use this book!
You know, I have a nice home to entertain in and what I think are great ideas, but what I struggle with is not having everything perfect! I try to remember that when I’m BEING entertained in another’s home, I don’t even look for imperfection….I guess we are our own worst critics. I would LoVe to read through this book! Thanks for the giveaway!
I am extremely reluctant to open up my home to others and I still want this book. Thanks for a chance to win!
My husband I have recently been challenged to open our home more. Excuses are too easy to find. I would love have this book! Thank you.
Rhoda, I love to entertain but don’t do it as much as I wish I would. I have many lame excuses. I would love a copy of this book to help me get over myself and entertain even more.
I’m a reluctant entertainer but I would like to overcome that. I would love to win and learn how to do so!
