Always ready for another fun outing, my friend, Debbie and I opted for the Southern Beauty Boot Camp that one of my blog friends, Shannon, holds about once a month or so right here in Birmingham. Shannon had invited us to sign up and come and we finally made it last weekend. The weather was dismal, so it was a good day to stay inside and learn some new beauty and skin care tips. Shannon’s blog, Southern Beauty Magazine, is chock full of great makeup and fashion tips, so if you’re into that sort of girlie thing, check it out. And those of you here in town just might want to sign up for Beauty Boot Camp yourself. Lots of good and practical information on skin care and makeup. And several of us got makeovers from the Dior pros that were on hand. THAT was fun!
As a bonus, the Beauty Boot Camp is held in the Southern Progress building, home of some of our favorite magazines, Southern Living and Coastal Living. Right after moving to Birmingham, I took a tour of Southern Progress (owned by Time, Inc. by the way) and it was so exciting to see where Southern Living magazine is born and edited after reading it for so many years. It was very fun to walk through the test kitchens where all those recipes are hatched.
The building itself is so remarkable and if you have to work, you would wish that you work in a building like this. Inside is beautiful and the outside has the most remarkable views. They are perched in the treetops right off Lakeshore Drive, with the added benefits of a pond, waterfall, and absolutely stunning woodsy views.
Talk about letting go of stress, I suppose just staring out the windows at this everyday would encourage creativity and low anxiety.
Inside, the building is decorated very sleek and stylish and feels very warm and inviting.
Lots of pretty artwork is hanging everywhere.
Check out one of the conference tables. Can you imagine holding a meeting in this location? I’d be totally distracted.
More of the gorgeous artwork that graces Southern Progress.
Right outside, one of the patio areas that encourages savoring those outdoor lunches and if I worked here, this is where I’d spend my lunch hour for sure.
So, back inside we’re ready for the Boot Camp. The tables were set and we heard a great presentation on skin care.
And enjoyed some delicious munchies, including cupcakes that weren’t just pretty, but also tasty.
Dior cosmetics was represented at this Boot Camp and several beauty professionals were on hand to give 4 of us makeovers using Dior products.
Everything was beautifully displayed.
And ready for the makeovers.
The 4 of us sat here for our beauty treats.
Debbie and I before our makeover.
And after. I don’t think you can see a drastic difference and we were under the harsh glare of fluorescent lights. The makeup did feel good, but we didn’t purchase anything, although we all got some freebie samples to take home, which was nice. I use Bare Minerals foundation and really like it a lot, so it would take something special to sway me from it.
I did like how he did my eye shadow though. I’m going to experiment on combining some different colors for a fresh look. I use to be a lot crazier with my eye colors and bought those huge eye shadow kits, but now I tend to stick with browns and neutrals with my blue eyes.
We had a great time at the Beauty Boot Camp! Fun way to spend a Saturday morning and it was nice getting pampered by the pros. I left with a new determination to arm myself with toner, serum, and eye cream once again. I’ve been a little lax with my skin care products and feel the need to add those back into my arsenal.
How about you?
Are you disciplined with your skin care routine?
Do you have a favorite skin care brand that you are loyal to?
Me, I jump around from one to the other and don’t spend a ton on my skin care products. I’ve been sticking with Oil of Olay for awhile now and have heard great things about their Regenerist products.

What fun! I’m jealous I would totally LOVE a beauty bootcamp as I am a product junkie!! I use bare mineral foundation too and NOTHING compares, but as far as face colors like blush and eyeshadow I try all different kinds. I get lazy with my skincare and I know I shouldn’t, but at the end of the night Im just so tired!

Sounds like a fun day! I agree on the view outside in a meeting. I would have a difficult time staying on track, and lunch would definitely be at those tables!

Sounds like a fun day. Who doesn’t like a makeover? I noticed your eye shadow right away. I like the color. It looks great on you. It looks like a color very similar to one I just bought the other day. I just use moisturizing bar soap to wash my face and Burt’s Bees facial lotion. Those are the two things I use everyday. I only wear full-on makeup on the weekends for church. Sometimes I go out to other places but mostly just church.

that sounds like so much fun! I used to buy all expensive skin products from sephora and the dept stores but I am starting to switch to drugstore brands. For makeup I love MAC and I think I always will.

Fun!!! That eye shadow looks great! I like Origins products, especially the Checks and Balances face wash! I’m on the search for a lipstick that is NOT drying!! Suggestions anyone? Rhoda, I really like the lipstick color you are wearing…what is it? 🙂

I used to sell Avon and so have a few must haves from their line.
I am terrible at a skin care routine but have been “blessed” with oily skin so will look younger longer than if it were dry, the payoff for all of the acne in my younger years.

This sounded like a lot of fun and a gorgeous setting!

Thanks for the tour…love those views and enjoyed seeing where Southern Living is created…I love that mag. I’m not addicted to any particular skin care product….most cause me to breakout, even though I don’t have particularly sensitive skin. Looks like a great time.

I use sunscreen on my face every single day b/c I don’t want to look like my Great-Aunt Vera when I’m older. 😉

What a fun day! I just loved that patio!! Ooh, I could sit out there for hours reading!
I love Mary Kay products. I bought them from a friend for years and then she moved to VA. So, I started selling them to a couple of friends. The products are amazing. I think though if you are consistant in cleaning and moisturizing daily with a good product ( Mama has used Oil of Olay forever and her skin is gorgeous!),then you are fine. Just be consistant. That’s my beauty tip for the day –heehee!
Hugs!

Now that was a fun day!
I use Clinique and have for years but my eyes are the only thing that I make up. I want to make them a little more dramatic. Our daughter just got engaged and is getting married next year so I want to learn to do my make up better for myself and those photos (I am only being real here).

I like your makeover, your eyes especially. I’m a huge mineral foundation fan too…. would be very difficult to ever get me to go back to liquid.

Sounds like great fun….I would have to say that I really am bad about any face products. I wash with Neutrogena and you will be lucky if you see me with mascara, eye liner and lip gloss.

I am faithful to my beauty routine and LOVE, LOVE, LOVE my Clinique products! I never go to bed (no matter how dang tired I am) with makeup still on my face.

Rhoda, you are talking about a subject near and dear to my heart or should I say my face. I am a lipstick junky but I stick with bare minerals foundation and Bobby Brown products most of the time. I do try others but always wind up back with these two As far as skin care,Pretty simple I use cetaphil for cleanser and La Mer for face, eye and night cream. Don’t ever start using it! it is addictive, now I know why they say it has a cult following. I have tried to use others and I wind back with La Mer everytime. Fun Post and by the way, You are a true Southern Beauty!!

I am a fanatic about washing my face because of acne in my twenties. I am using an Oil of Olay Regenerist scrub now, and I LOVE my clairisonic brush thingie. My skin feels so smooth! I’ve tried tons of eye creams, even prescription ones, but the best one I’ve found is good ole Walmart Equate eye cream. I don’t know if it makes my eyes look younger, but they sure feel soothed!

How fun! It looks as if you had fabulous day and I love the Southern Progress building. It would definitely be a challenge to stay focused during a meeting, but the place itself is so inspiring.
Have a great week,
