Summer Door Pocket

Hey, friends!  I hope you’re all having a nice long weekend.  It’s been relaxing for us, we’re grilling out and enjoying being at home.  We started a new project at Mark’s parents’ house, we’re installing a new backsplash for them at their house using peel and stick glass tiles. I’ll be sharing that project when we get it finished.  Mark’s mom is so excited to finally be getting a backsplash in her kitchen and I’m happy we can do it for her.

Since summer is here, I wanted to add something new to our door to welcome in the season, so wanted to share with y’all what I did!

I was shopping in At Home and looked through their faux flowers and found several green and white stems that I thought would work together so I brought them all home and put them together for a fun summer basket on the front door.

I’ve had this metal door basket for a few years, it’s from the Biltmore Inspirations home decor line that unfortunately didn’t make it long term so is no longer in business.  This basket has a plastic handle and I hung it up with a clear suction cup holder, that I’ll show you in a minute.

When arranging flowers, I just use my eye to determine where to place them.  I added a piece of foam inside the basket so my stems would have something to stick into.  I started with the daisy bunch, it was one large bunch and they spread out nicely for the main flower.

I also added the other white flowers as filler. The artichoke stems came 3 to a stem so I just used one of those in the middle. When I’m doing an arrangement like this, I always use tall things at the back, with lower ones in the middle for a focal point and filler.

Three of the green fuzzy grass pieces anchored the back as well as a few preserved green stems that I already had around. I also added 2 white pussywillow stems in the back between the fuzzy green ones to add a little white up top.

Those drapey green pieces look nice spilling over, like a vine. I’m not sure what they are called, but they add some drama. This is just one of those.

I love this mix of happy greens!

Here’s a look from the side and how it’s hung from the clear suction cup. I use these on all my front doors with glass and they work great. I also added a burlap green bow to fill in behind everything and help hide the suction cup, since these baskets pitch forward a bit when hung from the door.

Here are similar suction cups to the ones I have. Amazon affiliate link.

I love the mix of white and green for a Summer arrangement.  The artichokes add a lot of texture and interest and the vibrant green color is perfect for this time of year.  The mix of the daises with their yellow centers along with the dainty white flowers in the other stems are a nice combo as well.

It was fun putting these all together into an eye-catching arrangement for the front door.  It sure makes me smile when I come in the front door and drive past the house seeing our front entry the way everyone else sees it.

Here’s to summer!

I did a little update this year (2020) on the door pocket with a new basket I ordered so I did a video to show you how I did it this time. This one is a little more compact and smaller using the same materials as the first one. Take a look!

What a gorgeous arrangement. I love the addition of the artichokes. And, I am interested in hearing about the peel and stick tiles. We recently put new laminate flooring in our laundry room and I have been thinking about tiling the wall behind our washer and dryer. While I have installed traditional tile before, I would love something less mess and time consuming!

Thank you, Lauren! I love how it turned out. I’ll definitely be sharing a post about the peel and stick tiles. They are less messy than the traditional tile method.

I noticed this arrangement on one of your previous posts and really liked it Rhoda. I have double doors and need to keep my eyes open for some stems and fillers on sale so I can fill a couple new baskets I have. I figure they’ll be ready by fall, lol.
    Enjoy your Memorial Day.

HI, Rita, thank you! It is fun to find things that work together and I just may change this out in Fall for a Fall arrangement. I’ll be on the lookout too for a sale on stems before then. But at least they can all be reused again!

HI, Barbara, thank you for stopping by, I’m loving this door pocket too! Hope you have a good day as well. It’s very cloudy here so we are inside for the day.

Rhoda, that is so pretty! How do you keep the container from swinging/banging on the door when it is opened? (I had that problem). I’m really excited to read the post about the tiles because I had just been looking at some in Lowe’s. No grilling here in S.C. with Alberto’s heavy rain.

Hey, Roxanne, it’s pretty rainy here too, so we are staying inside today. I think my hubby will be grilling steaks later and he’ll do it under the cover of the deck between showers.

I haven’t had a big problem with the container hitting the door, if I open the door pretty slowly it’s fine. We come in and out the garage, so don’t use the front door every day, but so far so good. I’ll definitely be sharing about those tiles when we get that project further along and finished. They work pretty well and there may be other brands with peel and stick tiles. This is a brand that has been to Haven the past couple of years, so I had a contact with them.

Hello, I love your floral arrangement… I have an aqua pocket with sunflowers on my door.. I think that you would like it because I know how to love aqua and turquoise.
On May 16 you had a post on Fashion over 50: Blue and Green Top but unfortunately I only saw it today but I wanted to tell you that you look lovely and I would love to know the name and brand of the nail polish you were wearing on your toes. Just lovely color!
I posted a comment on that post but I do not know if you look at comments on older posts.
    Thank you!

HI, Yvonne, thank you for stopping by & yes, I did see that comment and meant to go back and answer you. I got my toes done at the salon, so I used a bright coral from there, but I have one at home that’s very similar called Savina Sunset, here’s a link I found online for that polish. It’s very bold for summer and I really like it!

I used to have a precious basket-style door pocket. Do you think I know where it is now? NO! I think I loaned it to someone. Your door looks delightfully charming. Now I’m going to go crazy tracking down my pocket so I can make my door look like yours!

Hey, Leslie Anne, thank you, I hope you find your door pocket too! they really are cute and different from the expected wreath on the door.

Pretty, but does it bang the window when using the door? I don’t have great luck with suction cups staying put. Is yours an ordinary one?

HI, Cathy, it really doesn’t bang at all if I don’t swing open the door fast. It’s just a suction cup hanger I found at Ace Hardware and I have several of them. They work great on glass.

Everything you share is just beautiful!! I had to stop putting wreaths on my front door because the birds ALWAYS make a nest. Any other ideas to decorate a front door? Thank you.

Hi, Carla, thank you so much! I’m not sure how to stop them from doing that. They were trying to build a nest on top of one of our columns on the porch, but I think it didn’t make it. I would definitely try to deter that from happening. Wonder if you could add a piece of tin foil or something to your wreath to scare them away, but that would detract from the wreath.
