The Sonnet House

It was a perfectly beautiful sunny day, so I decided to stop by The Sonnet House in Leeds.  I’ve mentioned this historical place before and took a few photos from the outside, but this time went inside to see this beauty for myself.

Picture 041

I read the history about this place on the website and also how it got transformed into a wedding and special event venue by a few college guys who got together and decided to start their own business.  The house opened for weddings in 2007 and has been going strong ever since.  I can see why.  It’s a gorgeous place, with loads of charm.

Picture 059

Built originally in 1924, it has character and history, as well as beauty.  What a perfect spot for a wedding.  They won the #1 Best Venue in Northern Alabama award at My Fox Alabama for 2009.  Picture 060

It was fun to finally get to see this place up close and personal.  I’ve driven by here countless times since we moved here and always look at it admiringly. Picture 058

This Saturday, they happened to be hosting a wedding.  Luckily, I got there as folks were milling around getting things ready.  So, I walked through and snapped pics of the flowers and cakes.  If you know who the wedding party is, tell them I said sorry for crashing their party but it wasn’t even close to starting yet, so I was able to glide on through.  Maybe they thought I was with the Press. 🙂 Picture 057

There’s a small chapel in the back that is very quaint and cozy, perfect for a smaller wedding.

Picture 052

Right through these doors.  They were busy inside, so I didn’t take any pics in there. Picture 053

Picture 054

Porch on the back side of the house.

Picture 050

Large area in back, perfect for a summer party. Picture 051

Complete with its own weathered barn.  How cool is this? Picture 056

Back inside, I was in awe of this gorgeous wedding cake.  So pretty!

Picture 046

Flowers were pretty stunning too. Picture 048

They were still working on the groom’s cake, but it looked pretty yummy too. And I knew the girl who was helping out with the cake, coincidentally. Picture 045

Main room for the food table.

Picture 055

And another gorgeous floral arrangement. Picture 043

I spotted 2 clawfoot tubs in the lower level of the home.  Picture 044

And I  hear from the website, that this red tub has garnered many photo opportunities. I can see why!

There are lots more pics on the website, so check it out too if you’d like to see more.  They host all sorts of events, so if this is something you might be interested in, I hope you’ll give them a call.

Looks like a great place to host a party of any kind, especially a wedding!

I volunteered to be a hostess with the 2010 Decorators Showhouse here in Birmingham and my day will be April 28th from 10-1, so if any of you are coming to tour the house that day, please look for me.  The hostesses had a special day to tour the house last Sunday and I took lots of pics and will hopefully post them (we really weren’t supposed to take pics).  I’ll have to split it up, cause I took about 100 of this stately 1950’s home that was formerly owned by Richard Scrushy, the Healthsouth founder, who is now serving time in a Texas prison.

I am impressed that it was developed into a business by college students. It looks like it was well thought out and is very successful.
    Love it!

    Oh, and that wedding cake!
    Gorgeous!

    I love the red tub!

I’m serving as a docent at the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra’s Decorator Show House and I can’t wait! This is my sixth year to volunteer and it is one of the most volunteer experiences of the year for me (volunteering is my business so I do a ton of it)! Can’t wait to see your pictures and I hope you stop by to see some of mine.

BTW – loved your stair project!!!

Will this be the house that you are hosting? This home is gorgeous.

Cheri, no, the Decorators Showhouse is entirely different. It’s a fund raiser for the AL Symphony and you can click that link above for all the info. Always a fun house tour, I’ve been going every year since I moved here.

What a beautiful venue! And what clever fellows to come up with this idea and carry it out.

I have a good friend who lives in Leeds. Did you know Charles Barkley, the NBA player, grew up in Leeds? Yes, he did. . . and my friend told me, “He’s good to his mama.” 🙂

Thanks for the tour! Once again, you’ve made me miss Birmingham!

What a rare find! It would be easy to get lost in the charm and uniqueness of the house. Thanks for sharing.

    Hi Rhoda,
We also drive by this house all the time, and my older daughter (she’s 15 yo) absolutely loves it and says that she is going to live there one day! So when that happens, we will invite you to come back and take more pictures then!!
