I’ve had people over the years encourage me to talk to my mom and dad and get video of them recorded. I’ve done lots of little videos with them going over there for lunch, but recently we were sitting around the table and had a little extra time. Dad started talking about the past and so I turned on my phone video camera and started recording.
This is pretty unedited, I’m not very good with editing videos so I took two videos and spliced them together and it’s mostly dad talking and mom chiming in on her thoughts. It’s 18 minutes long, so not too long, so I hope you enjoy.
A little background for those of you who might be new to my blog. My dad is currently 93 years old, mom is 92. They have been married for 66 years and dad is a retired Pastor, with the Assemblies of God denomination. He was not raised in a Christian home, but by God’s providence he became a Christian at age 23. He then quit his job at the paper mill in Panama City, FL and enrolled in Bible College in Lakeland, FL (now Southeastern University) where he and my mom met and got married. Thus began their lives as young married pastor’s life and this video is his memories of being drafted into the army during WW2 and then getting out and working and then quitting to go to Bible college. I hope you enjoy! His short term memory on many days is not that good, but his long term memory is definitely intact. He remembers a lot of details from his early days. It’s a treasure to get these memories recorded and I know my family will treasure this and I hope you enjoy too!

That was wonderful – they are both treasures for sure 🙂 would love to hear them speak again on how things were “back then” – it is amazing what they have seen in life. You all are so fortunate to have them both; there were things I wish I had asked my grandparents about how it was for them growing up, even more as I get older – thx for sharing them with us!

Rhoda, What a treasure! I watched this interview with your precious parents and wept. I so wish life in America would continue as this sweet testimonial to our Lord and Savior. You have been blessed with a Godly heritage.

Oh Rhoda, that was so wonderful. Thank your parents for sharing with us. If I can say this as carefully as possible, they are of only a few of their generation left to impart to us their wisdom and guidance and ethics… and a glimpse through the eye of their memories into a far different way of life. They truly are a blessing to be cherished.

I loved hearing your parents voices. I miss seeing them at Marietta Alliance and loved when Rev. Vickers would guest preach on a Wednesday night. So glad you recorded your Dad and shared his story. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

So very precious, Rhoda. My parents would have been 102 and 100 this year, and would have been married 80 yrs tomorrow (8/28). What I wouldn’t give to have heard my dad recount his days in WWII. He did not talk about it at all, nor did my mom. He lost his leg in the war, and we suspect he suffered PTSD over the years, and was the reason he never talked about it. Thank you for sharing your mom and dad’s video.
