Who Left the Lights On?

{Giveaway is Closed}

The winners are:

#14 – Shirley

#27 – Joyce

#61 – Carolyn

#63 – Melissa

#82 – Sharon  – Congrats ladies, you’ve all been emailed!

What parent has never said those words?

Oh, I bet you have. That’s one of the things that happens in any family. Someone is always going to leave the lights on.

Well, there’s a way to avoid that in your high traffic/kid zone areas. Lutron has come out with a product, a motion sensitive sensor that automatically turns OFF the lights when it doesn’t detect motion in a room. You can set it from 1 minute to whatever and when that room is quiet and idle, the lights will automatically turn off.  And the light will automatically turn ON when you enter the room.

That’s pretty cool, don’t you think? It’s amazing all the new products out there and this is one that I love! Lutron asked me to try out one of their products and share it all with you, so let’s get started.

There’s a giveaway at the end, so don’t miss that!

Lutron sensor

The Lutron Occupancy Sensor switch is really very neat.  Once installed, you can set the timer to however many minutes you want to have it stay on before it automatically switches off.

And it’s all from motion in the room.  Those kids going in and out of the bathroom leaving the lights on?  Yeah, those days are over with this gadget!

Before switch

I decided to put mine in the laundry room. Sometimes we are in and out of there and forget to turn the lights off so this will come in handy.

lutron sensor switch installed
After 1 minute, the lights will go OFF automatically. Love that!

wiring lutron sensor

Here’s how easy it is and I’ve got a little video to share that too.  You remove the old switch, then hook up black to black and black to tan (my extra wire was tan, not sure if that is universal), but the green wire is the ground wire as is that silver wire that comes out of the Lutron.  Just wrap the silver and green wires around the grounding screw, screw all of the screws back in and reconnect to the wall.

The sensor works with all light bulbs, including incandescent, halogens, fluorescents, and more.  It is also available in the occupancy sensor and dimmer switch as well.  I just chose the occupancy sensor.

That’s it!  Then you can set the timer to whatever length of time you want for your switch to go OFF when not in use.  I think this is great for families with  kids. Imagine all the arguments than can be saved with this?  You can find out more about the Maestro Occupancy Sensor at the Lutron site.

No more yelling, “Who left the lights on?”.

Check out the video below for installation ease.  Someone mentioned that I didn’t say to turn off the power to the light switch before installing, so YES, definitely DO turn off the breaker to that room before doing any electrical installation.

Now, for some fun for all of you too, Lutron is offering up 5 of these Lutron Occupancy Sensor switches for 5 winners on my blog. All you have to do is leave a comment telling me the room you’d like to use it in.  You can chose the Occupancy sensor or Occupancy with dimmer too.  I’ll choose 5 winners in a few days and then they will get the chance to try out a switch too.  I really like how this works and I think ya’ll will too!

If you don’t win the giveaway, here’s a coupon code for you!

I can tell you who leaves them on in my house..my 21 year old son. His space is upstairs and if I don’t go up there he leaves lights and fans running all day while he’s gone. A switch would be wonderful!

I would love one for my son’s room. He is so responsible, except for one little area – turning off the light switch when he leaves the room. That would be an awesome addition to his room makeover this fall!

That’s a great idea, where was it 20 years ago 🙂 It is back to school time and kids leave the house after me. They hear the Bus coming and run out the house without making sure if everything is turned off. Since our Entry Hallway and Living room is a great big room I would like to have one there. I have stickers on the door to remind the kids, asking Lights off?, The sensor could remove the sticker 🙂
    Thank you!

I need to put one in my girls’ bathroom! I have four little girls who are constantly going in and out of the bathroom and leaving that light on.

I would put one in our master bedroom closet. It always seems like we walk out and leave the light on…guess we can’t blame the kids on this one!

How nice are these, I would put this in my daughters room cause she always runs out without turning the light off. I can see the glow from down the hall and, know she is not in there. So, if I had this could know that she has left the room and not have to nag her about turning it off, 1 minute and lights out!!

I have a room I will call the playroom. I call it that but no one plays there. It has turned out to be a storeroom for the kids to pick up or drop off their toys, gear and junk. Someone always forgets to turn that light out so that’s the room I would pick.

I would use this in the master bathroom and I would not hear my husband saying, “are you going back into the bathroom?” Sounds like a great idea!

I think the Lutron would be a great thing to have in the master closet or master bedroom as I am always forgetting to turn off the lights in there. Thanks for sharing this new technology with us!

We just moved into a new home and I need this in the laundry room! The light switch is in an odd place and a motion sensor night light is just not bright enough.

I have a hard time thinking of a room where this wouldn’t be good. I would like it in our garage or 1/2 bath or laundry room. My friend has one in her kitchen so that when she walks in with her hands full of groceries the lights will come on. I want them in every room.
