What parent has never said those words?
Oh, I bet you have. That’s one of the things that happens in any family. Someone is always going to leave the lights on.
Well, there’s a way to avoid that in your high traffic/kid zone areas. Lutron has come out with a product, a motion sensitive sensor that automatically turns OFF the lights when it doesn’t detect motion in a room. You can set it from 1 minute to whatever and when that room is quiet and idle, the lights will automatically turn off. And the light will automatically turn ON when you enter the room.
That’s pretty cool, don’t you think? It’s amazing all the new products out there and this is one that I love! Lutron asked me to try out one of their products and share it all with you, so let’s get started.
There’s a giveaway at the end, so don’t miss that!

The Lutron Occupancy Sensor switch is really very neat. Once installed, you can set the timer to however many minutes you want to have it stay on before it automatically switches off.
And it’s all from motion in the room. Those kids going in and out of the bathroom leaving the lights on? Yeah, those days are over with this gadget!

I decided to put mine in the laundry room. Sometimes we are in and out of there and forget to turn the lights off so this will come in handy.

After 1 minute, the lights will go OFF automatically. Love that!

Here’s how easy it is and I’ve got a little video to share that too. You remove the old switch, then hook up black to black and black to tan (my extra wire was tan, not sure if that is universal), but the green wire is the ground wire as is that silver wire that comes out of the Lutron. Just wrap the silver and green wires around the grounding screw, screw all of the screws back in and reconnect to the wall.
The sensor works with all light bulbs, including incandescent, halogens, fluorescents, and more. It is also available in the occupancy sensor and dimmer switch as well. I just chose the occupancy sensor.
That’s it! Then you can set the timer to whatever length of time you want for your switch to go OFF when not in use. I think this is great for families with kids. Imagine all the arguments than can be saved with this? You can find out more about the Maestro Occupancy Sensor at the Lutron site.
No more yelling, “Who left the lights on?”.
Check out the video below for installation ease. Someone mentioned that I didn’t say to turn off the power to the light switch before installing, so YES, definitely DO turn off the breaker to that room before doing any electrical installation.Â
Now, for some fun for all of you too, Lutron is offering up 5 of these Lutron Occupancy Sensor switches for 5 winners on my blog. All you have to do is leave a comment telling me the room you’d like to use it in. You can chose the Occupancy sensor or Occupancy with dimmer too. I’ll choose 5 winners in a few days and then they will get the chance to try out a switch too. I really like how this works and I think ya’ll will too!
If you don’t win the giveaway, here’s a coupon code for you!

Loft Upstairs…….it would also be a safety feature for us, as we ascend the stairs to have the light come on and versa/visa, what a wonderful idea and a perfect solution, THANK YOU and LUTRON.
That would be great my son is always leaving the lights on from one end of the house to the other.
I would put mine in the laundry room also.
Family room! I get so tired of hiking up and down those stairs just to turn a light off! Thanks for the giveaway.
The entire house would be a good place for these little babies!
We put one of these up in the pantry because the light switch was inside, in an awkward spot and always being left on. It’s perfect because you walk in and it just turns on like magic! Then it turns off when you’re done.
What a great idea, thank you for this giveaway! I need this in our family room. Everyone always leaves the lights on in there.
I would love this for my son’s bathroom. He never remembers to turn his lights out!
Great installation instructions, Rhoda! I so NEED this in my kitchen. It’s wired weirdly and I have to walk all the way through the kitchen in the dark to get to the light switch. I can’t tell you how many toes I’ve stubbed in the past three years. What an excellent and useful product!!
Hi Rhoda,
Great item!! I would use mine in the garage : )) We are always leaving it on all night : ( This would definitely be a blessing : ))
Hi Rhoda,
Cool product! – I’d definitely use this in my kitchen. Then one in the basement so when I have my hands full of stuff I won’t have to run back to the bottom to turn the lights off! Thanks for the chance to win.
Joanie
Such a cool giveaway! Thanks for the opportunity. I’d use it in the bathroom. If I had nickel for everytime I shouted after my kids to turn off the light, I could outfit my whole house with them!
The laundry room at my house would be a very good place to begin! Thns for the chance to win!
I would use it at my entryway
I love this idea! I would use it in the kitchen to turn off 9 pot lights that are left on more than turned off….not very green but this idea sure is!
I need them all over my house, but mainly in the kitchen. Having our 2 little grandchildren here most of the time, well lets just say I get reminded daily of my parents telling us “Turn out the lights, we don’t own the electric company!”
Oh Yea! My laundry room. That the one room where my hands are always full and the light is forever on… forgotten.
How cool! I’d use it in the laundry room and the bathroom. Thanks for the opportunity to win one!
I’d put this in our office, where my bf is always leaving the light on.
Now this is something we could use! I would put this in our basement TV room. Our youngest son always leaves the light on and we often don’t notice for hours and hours. What a great way to save on hydro.
